Derek Newman's Bio

I'm a weekend warrior/dirtbag wannabe working as a writer for some goats in Backcounty's offices. I like to get around in the vertical world, whether I'm climbing up mountains or skiing down them. Without this job and its savvy discount, I couldn't afford the ridiculous amount of gear I buy for climbing, skiing, camping, and running.

Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

Wow, last weekend had 30 mph winds where we camped in the desert, and this tent was one of the few that actually didn't break. Not only did it not break, but it was also the only tent that didn't have sand blown in it the following morning, because the only open mesh panel is through the roof so I could look at the stars all night. I can't wait for the next camping trip!

Like most comfy sleeping pads, this one provides undisturbed sleeps while camping. Unlike most comfy ones, this one is lighter and smaller than most for easier carrying to and from the car. It's not small and light enough for backpacking, but it's just right for camping.

Familiarity: I've used it several times

Even with charging ten phones and a couple cameras every night for a week, I still haven't been able to deplete this battery. I've taken on yurt trips and multiple festivals, and this is so convenient for not only keeping my electronics charged, but all my friends' electronics as well. They appreciate me, and I appreciate Goal Zero.

I couldn't imagine going on a week-long camping trip without something as comfy as this. It's so nice to wake up without an aching back because my sleeping pad wasn't as comfy as this one. Even that fabric is buttery soft against my skin. It really makes me look forward to going to bed after the campfire.

This tent might be meant for winter camping, but I took it to a music festival this summer because there was a chance of rain, hail, wind, and a lot of sun. I'm happy to say that my tent was the only tent to not collapse from the heavy winds, and it was the only tent that didn't let water in during the rain and hail. As for the sun, it was surprisingly comfortable in 80F degree sun while I napped in the afternoon. It was easy to set up and super reliable.

We took this cooler camping for a weekend in the desert, then followed it up with a festival in hot weather. All week long, we never had to change out the ice. I was really impressed with the amount of cold beer I could have all week. It's super burly, and closes so tightly that driving from high altitude to low altitude caused it to compress too tightly to open.

I love taking this system to places like the Bugaboos and Lone Peak. It packs gas and stove inside the pan to not take much space in my backpack. It's super effective too. The gas burns so clean that the system can boil water super fast. That way, I can use one canister for five days of making coffee and dehydrated meals.

If last generation's X4 was considering the gold standard of camming units, this generation is certainly platinum. They feel lighter and the placements feel more secure. I love the trigger keepers on the larger cams, and I like that every stem feels equally stiff. The new colors on the sling help me pick the new generation on my rack of old cams.

The whole tent packs down so small--poles and all--so you can strap this tent to the handlebars. It's insanely light, and still reliable in the few rain storms over our tour. It's very easy to set up, and it's surprisingly roomy inside, with a big overhead pocket to stuff bags and unwanted items. I would even take this tent backpacking.

Having a gravity filter automatically filtering water without a pump is certainly convenient, but what really surprised me was how effective and reliable this filter was in questionable water. We were backpacking along the Escalante, a small river that's so murky we couldn't see our feet when we were ankle-deep. I filled the bag with the brownest water I've ever filtered with doubts, but this bag provided crystal clear water, then packed down small for the trek home.

I was surprised at the level of comfort while climbing in this harness. I got it to pack light and small for alpine trips, but I was blown away at hanging belays. I'm definitely planning on climbing sport in this too. I imagine falling wouldn't feel painful at all.

I like packing these on ski tours with vertical sections of the approach. I'm sure they could handle more technical terrain, but they fit small enough in my backpack so I can always rely on them when I'm ski mountaineering.

Got this as a gift and it’s been great! Friend is excited to use it for next ski season but more excited to use it for climbing and hiking. Features like the barometric storm alert and GPS function are life savers when out in the backcountry. So not only is it a great gift for someone who likes to see how much altitude gain there is but also because it helps people find their way home too.
