I got this shoe in an earlier model. I stepped in a few streams in Patagonia and thought my foot had gotten soaked, but it turns out it was just the chill soaking through, not the water. I was happy to find that the waterproofing worked as expected.

They were comfortable over a five-day backpacking trip, and for the rest of the trip spent kicking around town, and they worked well with both yaktrax and crampons over them (not for ice climbing, just for tramping around on a glacier).

I got two of these to set up top rope anchors. They certainly get the job done, but I got tired of fumbling around with the twist lock while setting up the master point. The problem solved itself when a buddy was setting up one day and he fumbled one of the two biners into a 20m fall onto the rocks next to me. Retired that one immediately and bought different biners to replace both of them.

This bag can haul a lot of gear. I have used to haul a 70m climbing rope, 44m static rope, shoes, harness, 12 draws, and a helmet along with a water bottle.

The reason I don't grab it first any more is that the tarp is so small compared with my other rope bag, and because the bag opens in the middle of the tarp, any nudges to the bag really shrink the tarp area quickly. I climb a lot with a very fine-grit dirt under the bag, so it's more important to me to keep my rope out of the dirt than it is to be able to carry a bunch of stuff in my rope bag. Instead, I use a sling rope bag with a huge tarp and I throw the entire rope bag into a backpack.

Perfect for backpacking or car camping

I got these thinking I'd take something smaller when backpacking, but they're perfect for a solo trip or for a trip with friends. While they do take up a bit of space, they also can hold a lot of other cooking gear - I keep fuel, my stove, and cleaning supplies in the set with room to spare.

I use these to keep my hands warm during winter climbs. I don't like to hand jam with them on because it means I'm suddenly putting a piece of gear between me and the rock while holding on to the inside of a glove that isn't comfortable to wear when tight enough to not slip a little bit. I ended up trying three sizes before I settled on the medium. The fingers are a bit tight on the smaller sizes even though the length measurements in the specs matched up for me.

I also wear them when rappelling and belaying. These are standard in my crag bag right next to the harness, shoes, rope, and helmet.

I wear this to commute 30 miles a day on my bike. I've taken it mountaineering, and I've worn it over weekends in the woods. It keeps you warm, even after you've sweated all over it. It doesn't itch anywhere near as much as I'd have guessed (yeah, any wool is going to itch a little bit after three days). I love this thing!

Familiarity: I've used it several times

I'm a short guy and I've got short fingers. I got this because I liked the look of the rubber center piece to work out the outside of my forearms. Unfortunately it doesn't really generate the tension I'd need for it to be useful. I assume that it would work find for someone with longer fingers.

On the flip side, my fingers aren't skinny, so the loops are a bit too tight.

I got this to have something nicer than my backpacking pad when I'm pitching a tent within a ten-minute walk of a car. It's too bulky for me to want to take it into the back country, but it's perfect for car camping, and I've used it with overnight temps falling into the mid-20s. I found it to be sufficient insulation from the ground on that trip.

I'm short, these pants are not. The waist is a perfect fit, they're comfortable, and they fit really well until I walk around when I start to step all over the heel of the pant.

They also make a bit more noise than I was expecting them to when I walk in them.

That said, I spent a weekend in them in the woods, and I like them enough that I'm now looking for an affordable place to hem the cuffs so that I can keep them.
