David Lenz's Bio

I love to climb outdoors in Joe's and Moe's valleys and also train in the gym at the Front. I also road bike and commute around Salt Lake City and enjoy working on my own bikes. My favorite thing to do is to scramble around on fourth class terrain.

Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

Went on my first ski tour with this boot and after my first upgrade in about a decade and was mind blown by all the features. The walk mode + ergonomic buckles are easy to travel in and they are fantastic for flat sections where you need to quickly change between downhill and walking modes. Even while breaking in the boot on my first trek up, it was comfortable on both feet ( I have slightly narrower feet than AVG.)

I was riding on loaned out skis that were too big for me and I have to say that they were still easy to push uphill and skied fantastically on the way down thanks to these boots. The stiffness of the boot came in really big for controlling the skis through some tight spaced Aspen forest skiing. I didn't find the boots overly stiff, since I am used to the opposite. I would estimate on first impression that the stiffness value may be overrated in the 120 flex value?

Will update upon additional field research!

2 poles, high structural integrity, waterproof breathable Todd-Tex fabric floor and walls, low weight, 2 person capacity, and improved ventilation from older models!

There are few tents I would rather by having to set up on a gusty day in high elevation areas or when a big thunderstorm appears out of nowhere cresting over the peak. The fast setup time adds up if you set up your tent many times per year, this one will save your both grief and time in doing so. I really like the you set it up from the inside, so you can stay dry while putting in up if the rain starts beating down. The quick disassembly time will help as well if you are pushing a big peak or continuing the hike the next morning.

I will always prefer to own a 2 person tent over a 1 person. If I am alone, its spacious, breathable and I get a good nights sleep. But more often than not, you will be on an adventure with a partner, and having extra space for another occupant is a great investment!

Familiarity: I gave it as a gift but have feedback to share
Fit: True to size
Height: 5' 11"
Weight: 180 lbs
Size Purchased: L

Gave this to my good friend as a birthday gift this winter and I can say that these are amazing as a go to for anyone with a slim, yet strong body type. The lower torso taper is tighter and less baggy than the Nano Air for example. The sleeves are also tapered to be tighter towards the cuffs, this is a very good thing if you are wielding an ice ax, climbing or even trying to fit it flush inside of a glove.

(88% polyester, 12% elastane) construction allows for the perfect balance of breathability and stretch. Great balance of all features, perhaps the only thing lacking compared to others near the price point would be the 60g Coreloft, this insulation can't quite touch the warmth of either a down fill contempory or the 60g FullRange synthetic on the Men's Nano Air.

I thought these would be black, but they were actually somewhere on the grey scale from a (white) 6-9 (black) rating and seemingly a few random splotches of lighter grey and asymmetric between the two shoes. Not a big deal to me personally, but watch out if it is to you!

Runs maybe 1/2 a size small or so. Have not biked much in them at all yet, because its the heart of winter in SLC, UT but I am super excited about these shoes for some riding in the next couple of months as they feel comfy, stiff and I like the closure system design on these.

Got this as a gift for my sister and she is pretty stoked on it so far, pressure relief cutout in the center works well to take pressure off of nerves and keep the rider right on the sit bones. There is a reason this saddle is constantly on lists for the best women's saddle on the market right now!

Works perfectly my kinetic trainer, I had to run a different tire on my trainer last winter here in SLC and was really sad with how worn down that other tire got by the season of running on metal.
Got this one purely for the durability aspect of this special rubber compound and I was pleasantly surprised to find that not only is it durable, but the way it rolls along the spinning metal of the training feels awesome, I can zone out and ride my current bike trainer setup for hours with how nice it is. Really impressed, cheers Kinetic.

I like them so far, I am a big fan of wool, especially in winter for the moisture wicking and antimicrobial features of merino wool. They are not overly thick material and stay a very consistent and comfortable temperature throughout the day, which is super awesome.
I was less impressed at first impression, but so far, I am liking them more and more, just got to be careful not to hot wash them!

I like this bar for the caffeine content, which is noticeably there for me as a casual coffee drinker. Really the perfect thing after a morning run or bike ride.
Not really a nightly gym post workout for me, due to the caffeine, but excited to have these for the spring and ski season 2016-17. They do taste much better then almost all other protein bars I have tried.

Only problem with this tool is the lack of a chain breaker of some sort, which is pretty important to me for both road bicycling and especially mountain biking. The other features such as the allens and screwdrivers work great!

great for commuting, durable material, works with most bike racks. Make sure you mount it in the right direction, it works much better, also pairs some zip ties with my to theft proof it a bit. The bags each have several compartments with various organizational functions. I have quite a lot of tools in one side, and I like how they all fit really well in there. I have enough space between both sides to fit gear for bike to hike linkup adventures, which suits me perfectly. These are rather small bags each and quite heavy considering for a serious bicycle tour. Perfect for a commuter, I run 35c tires with the rear rack set up with these, and I personally wouldn't want to go any smaller!

They really are a great item, perfect jersey food for a little bike adventure, good for hikes as well! carbs, fats and protein, a bit of everything for when you are out there and need to eat. Not my favorite food for taking to works, the crumbs literally explode everywhere sometimes when you open them, its a extremely flaky product. Above all, these are quite delicious in the honey flavor, I am a simple flavors kind of guy and the honey is perfect.

This jacket is awesome, lightweight, super warm, DWR coating is perfect for light snow or rain protection. The jacket breathes quite well, and has one of my favorite hoods among jackets that I have owned

Got this saddle for a friend, but I am very familiar with them already. These saddles need to be taken care of a bit more than some others, leaving them out in the elements without a cover for too long is bad idea. The leather can get ruined by rain or snow over time, as well as freeze and thaw cycles.

The benefit of this saddle is that it will break in eventually to your own sit bones, unlike synthetic saddles that are designed for a very specific width of sit bones. Once broken in, a brooks is super comfy and add points to ride quality for sure. Also, this model of saddle works with a good range of handlebar positions, but are commonly paired with upright handlebars, where they shine as an all-star.

The side straps that do adjustments right by the ears, are not very easy to work with. They quickly get tangled up as they twist around themselves when you try to adjust them. I think the gaps that the straps feed through are too spacious, so it allows them to get twisted around.

Besides this flaw in the strap design, I love the helmet, after I had adjusted the straps, I found the helmet super light, it looks amazing, vents perfectly. The best part is the inside of the helmet, it is very comfortable. I also liked the back of the helmet, where the ergo hold system for adjustment is really nice.

-Good at cutting the wind, given their thinner profile.
-Tight air-seal around the wrists.
-Look really good with a black kit.
-Easy to use basic phone functions with them on.
-temperature range is roughly 35-55 deg. f in my opinion.

I think it is a great layer, the buttons, collar and cuffs are fantastic - I am a huge fan of wool flannels and this one is top notch. The wool is warmer than some other Pendletons I have owned. I really like the elbow reinforcements as well, the brown on gray looks so good.

I am a 5'10, 150lbs, with very broad shoulders.- pretty much a 2-d rectangle. The cut of this layer is better suited to thicker body types in my opinion and is way too flowy for me at my midriff and chest to be flattering. It is very likely I should have got a medium instead, but I think the medium would too constricting of my range of motion if it shrunk even a tiny bit.
I will probably keep this as a Christmas gift for my dad, who is around my height, but 20-30 lbs heavier.

As far a as bars go, these are a very good design, you can't go wrong with these compact drops. They offer many grip positions when paired with hoods and I like that the ends of the bars are long enough for those of us with long torsos to utilize a sprint position with a long stem.
