Dave Siegfried's Bio

Born and raised in San Diego, Ca. I am an accomplished sand castle designer having won several awards and have been featured in over two newspaper gazettes. I took second place in a youth bowling tournament but lost my amateur status for trading my AllStar Seaworthy (the Snorks) stuffed animal for a cash prize. I have spent several years as a guide, leading groups of innocent city dwellers into the wild. I am a retired commercial driver, having spent my last excursion touring America on a bus filled with the elderly, visiting national land marks, becoming an advocate for gin rummy, and eating more butterscotch candy than any human should ingest in a lifetime. Currently, I am seeking adventures including but not limited to climbing, skiing, kayaking, hiking, and 17th century French poetry conventions. I live my life according to Mountain Dew commercials. Put simply: I shred the gnar.

I am an avid rock climber. I enjoy the feel the course granite on my callused hands. I seek out an adventure that might put a little blood on my clothes. I thrive on adrenaline and the thrill of losing yourself in the momentum, not over analyzing every little detail that might slow down life. I find peace in the exhilaration of being a thousand feet off the ground, exposing your vulnerability to the earth and finding yourself in nature.

In my taste death, live life philosophy, I rely heavily on three things. Instinct, Passion, and Gear. While the first is innate and cannot be taught, it can be focused, even harnessed to a Jedi level of awareness. I fuel my passion in several ways. A strict training method, gut wrenching desire, no less than 10 hours of sleep, large amounts of coffee, 30 minutes a week dedicated to paint by numbers, more bacon than most can handle, a pinch of insanity, a strong sexual lust, and an obsessive gambling addiction (note, I did not say problem. Problem infers weakness, I have none).

And I look to Backcountry for the third. My gear needs to be top quality I can count on. And I beat the crap out of it, so I know it won't last forever. When it's time to say goodbye to my favorite piece of gear I shed a tear of sadness as I just lost a close friend, but I find hope and even a smile in the notion that I get to dip my hand back into the cookie jar for something new. I don't take many friends with me on my journeys, but the ones I share those intimate moments with are closer than family. My gear is my kin. My approach to summit any obstacle. They are my tools into a rite of passage as an outdoor enthusiast.

I love this pullover. Ridiculously lightweight, and still warm. This has been a go-to for me for just about everything. Great for layering or as a stand alone. Really can't go wrong with adding this to your gear closet.

This is a fantastic technical pant that is versatile enough for any condition. Love that the fit isn't bulky and allows movement for hiking, side stepping, or just cruising down groomers. I've only had a days in them so far, but I have been very pleased both in sunny days and storms. The medium fit perfectly.

Another great product from Patagonia, and while I am sure the technical components would perform perfectly in stormy and deep powder conditions, I found these pants to simply be too bulky. Returning this item for a more fitted ski pant.

I love these pants! The fabric is sturdy yet stretchy and not bulky at all, the way some other pants can be. I have been shopping for a long time to replace my old TNF ski pants, and I am so happy I found these. I even wore them on a super cold day and with a cozy base layer underneath, I stayed warm. Impressive for softshell pants. Only complaint is that I wish there more color options, as I always seem to end up with black.

I'm very pleased with this flannel shirt. At first it was very stiff, but after a wash, the fabric softened up, and its been a great ever day shirt. I will call out that this item does run small. I usually fit a Medium with this brand, but I needed to size up to a Large with this item.

I really like these boots. From how they fit to how they look. Overall, a good versatile boot for most occasions. One problem is with the elastic opening, which makes getting the boot on more snug than I would like. Also the elastic laces are an interesting feature. I'm not a fan of those, so I replaced with regular laces. Other than those two features, I'm very pleased with these boots.

I recently got these just to use as a casual shoe for everyday life. I'm very impressed with how comfortable they are, and still add a bit more style than a typical sneaker. They are quickly becoming my go to for casual wear.

I got this initially for long day use, but have definitely used on weekend trips when going light is the key. The backpanel, though not very robust, still supports a full load, but I could feel the weight start to be too much for the hip belt around 50 lbs. Anything under that, and this does exceptionally well. Very pleased with the versatility and overall comfort of this pack.

I don't love running while holding onto anything, but as my mileage crept up, I needed something for those longer runs. This was just enough water, and the ergonomic fit makes hanging onto it a non issue. The pocket is pretty small, and wouldn't hold much more than a gel pack, but still a nice feature.

I am very pleased with how comfortable this shoe is. With the tongue connects to the frame of the shoe which i wasn't sure about at first, even though it looks cool, but that feature makes getting them on and off a breeze. Classic look for a basic sneaker, and overall, a great looking and fitting go to for everyday.

I'm typically a sneaker guy. I wear sneakers pretty much everyday, but when it comes to something that requires a bit more class, this is a great choice for looking good, but keeping it non formal. The leather was good to go out of the box as well, not stiff and didn't need much breaking in. I found this to be true to size.

Familiarity: I gave it as a gift but have feedback to share

Got these for my girlfriend, and she had this to say: So happy with how these socks performed, keeping my feet warm in frigid water while canyoneering. They were thin enough to have my shoes still fit easily over them, and while they are not super snug, there was no looseness either, allowing my feet to feel protected but not trapped. Would highly recommend.

Got these for my girlfriend for hiking/canyoneering, and she had this to say: They are immediately comfortable, and fit true to size. They perform well on hikes, but are not very robust, which doesn't allow a lot of added support on uneven terrain. Great grip for scrambling on rocks, and overall very impressed with how versatile they are.

Got these for my girlfriend, she wrote: These are a great basic thong for every day wear. I was specifically looking for something comfortable to workout in, and these fit the bill. Softened after washing a few times.

Title says it all. This light weight hooded fleece is the best. I wear it over a T when its just not quite warm enough for short sleeves, but this also doubles as a mid layer with ease on colder days. The fit is athletic, though the length was shorter than I was expecting. I'm a pretty standard fit, and the length was just passed my waist. Still, its a great piece, and I am super pleased with stretchy fabric, and overall versatility of this item.
