Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
Before purchasing this rack I read plenty of reviews and noticed that there was one big issue with the rear wheel tray’s fastener not staying in, thus the wheel tray would fall off. Yakima did recalls for this and “fixed” the issue but some people still claimed to have issues.
The rack’s design and functionality met my needs and I saw a simple solution to the problem at hand. I just replaced the stock fastener with a bolt and nylock nut and this rack has been a workhorse ever since. I needed a rack that would allow me constant and quick access to my hatchback without having to lower or swing a rack out of the way, and I needed something that could carry my full-suspension mtb, bmx, or road bike.
This rack is certainly not without flaws, but it is sturdy and with a simple modification gets the job done. If you want something of equal or greater value, the Rocky Mounts is probably a better option considering that the Yakima isn’t 100% trustworthy out of the box. I just happened to get a great deal on this and it has worked well for me. I give it 4 stars because I never actually gave it the chance to fail on me before replacing the component, so the rack may have worked fine on it’s own, but would be contrary to nearly every bad review I read across the internet.
