Familiarity: I've used it several times

My mom would kill me if I didn't wear a helmet while climbing. So I used the Mammut Wall Rider for a light and protected climb. I enjoyed having the head lamp clips when we were still cleaning up our route in the dark. For it's size, the helmet is pretty light. Easy to on your head and forget it's there. You'll hardly notice it's deep in your backpack when you hike out. This helmet is high quality in comfort and safety. It's hard to say much else, I haven't gotten conked by gravity yet, but if I do I'll let you know how the helmet held up.

One sunny day, I borrowed the X1's in spite of my old Climb X shoes. The difference in my climbing ability was incredible. My footing was never a huge worry. I could focus on everything ahead of me and keep up with the gang. The sizing does run a little tight, but you'll still be getting a good work horse for your next big climb.

Fit: True to size

This is one of the best boots I've used in years. The Verto's come with a grippy Vibram Mulaz sole and very stiff shin support, as most climbers demand from their boots. Every step feels supported and locked in place, whether they're on snow or rock. My feet aren't overly beat up when I take them off after a day on the mountain, which isn't easy for a lot of mountaineer boots to live up to. The foot funk isn't horrible either, I think we can thank Gore Tex for that delightful bonus. My favorite attention to detail on these boots are the lacing. They're super easy to work with, even with burly gloves on. Readjusting them during a break takes minimal energy and almost no time at all. North Face set a high standard for comfort and stability with these boots. Time and time again, you'll feel it pay off.

Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I spend my summers as a canoe guide. This filter made cooking, cleaning and filling bottles way less work. I hear a lot of complaints about how easy it is to gunk the filters. The trick is to find moving water (streams and/or rivers), or fill the bladder in the middle of a lake. Other than that, scrub the filter with the included sponge daily and you'll have no worries. It produces a lot more clean water without pumping or cranking for hours. It's perfect for bringing groups in the backcountry for a week, a must-buy!

Whether you're seeking high peaks or walking in the woods, these snowshoes will make your experience memorable. They're easy to put on and take off (even with your gloves on!). The heel-rising Televators make steep slopes feel like walking on stairs. I used these snowshoes to bushwhack up the mountains in upstate New York. The Evo's took me up mountains I never thought I could climb before. Very handy when trying to establish a new ski glade. Like all MSR Products, the Evo Ascent is worth the extra buck because it's built to perform and survive many winters.
