Chris Purkey's Bio

I was born and raised here in the Salt Lake City, UT. So I'm no stranger to the breadth of activities Utah's unique landscape has to offer. In the winters you can find me snowboarding up Big Cottonwood canyon or angling along the frigid stretch of the Middle Provo River. In summers, you probably won't be able to find me because I'll be tucked away in the Uinta's with my family or hiding in a nice river hole throwing flies.

When I'm not playing or being a family man, I work here at Backcountry.com. I'm the Vice President of Gearhead Operations. Our Gearheads are the lifeblood of Backcountry. They’re the first folks customers interact with, and the reason customers return to our site. We wholeheartedly believe service is a differentiator that our business thrives upon. Gearheads pride themselves on expertise; in-depth, technical knowledge of the gear we sell as well as a love of the activities it’s used for… Not to mention, they’re nothing short of total and complete BADASSES. These guys and gals GET AFTER IT outside! I'm passionate about being outside and hell-bent on ensuring that our team helps you find the right ski, saddle or rod.

Whatever it takes to connect you to your passion, we are here for you!

I bought the Fjallraven Kanken for my wife to use to tote all her essentials to work in and she loves it. She works as an ICU nurse and is paranoid of bringing home all the germs that flood a hospital. This bag is small enough that its easy for her to keep hung out of the way, and the material is that where it's easy to wipe down when in doubt. She's able to pack her note books, lunch, makeup needs, etc without constraints. My daughter has one too, they both love em.

I bought one of these not knowing what to expect from southeast Asia, and didn't end up using it. My wife gave me a hard time for owning it in the first place but I was still set on using it, until I realized it wasn't necessary. I know one day I will find myself in a sketchy situation out of the country where I will put this bad boy to use and feel a whole lot better about it. There will be a time and a place!

If you're looking for a great ankle sock with some comfort, the Nike no show sock is an awesome option. If you really want a sock that doesn't show, this probably isn't the sock for you as it comes up just below the ankle line. Although, if you're wearing a pair of Janoskis or the likes, you're not really showing a whole lot. If you try to rock em' with a pair of vans or something lower profile you're gonna see a lot of sock. Either way, it's vital to have a few of these in your sock arsenal. I recommend it.

If you're looking for some serious Dad shorts that have a little style and all the bells and whistles, these are the duds for you. The sweat wicking material is great for hiking, the zipper pockets are very useful and I even dug the built in belt. I've hiked in jungles and through alpine terrain in these bad boys and they haven't failed me yet. They provide great range, breath perfectly and do what a good pair of technical shorts needs to do.

The Burton low maintenance kit is the perfect toiletry bag. It holds all the necessities with ease, and room for more. I typically don't like large toiletry bags but this one packs down easy enough if you aren't using the entire capacity. The design is great, the quality seems awesome like all Burton products. Definitely recommend if you're looking for a stylish bag for all your random essentials.

The Burton Traverse pack is the perfect traffic bag for those who do not want to hauling around a roller bag, or don't want a giant duffel to tote around. It's insane how much you can comfortably fit into this bag. I recently went to south-east asia for a week and found this pack the perfect size for my needs. I was able to comfortably fit a weeks worth of clothes, an extra pair of shoes, and all the knick knacks I needed for long flights and quick access points. The number of accessible and sizeable pockets is awesome. As a pack, its very comfortable to wear, the chest and hip straps come in handy for longer transitions between plane, train and automobiles. I highly recommend it, this is the best travel pack I've ever invested in.

While I bought these for touring, I've only used them so far for hiking/snowshoeing. That said, they are extremely comfortable to use given the adjustability. They feel are extremely light and pack up very nice and out of the way, but also feel durable and sturdy when in use. All in all they saved me on a long heavy hike into a Yurt the other weekend. As some of the reviews below mention, make sure you push the baskets up all the way. It took me a minute to realize mine were not on all the way and I could see loosing them a pretty easy thing. Highly recommended!

I bought these for my wife and she dug them. She wasn't super familiar with snowshoes and delayed wearing them as long as she could on our recent yurt trip. However, once she got them on and got a couple miles in she found them to be pretty comfortable and easy to traverse in. All in all they got the job done and she was highly satisfied with the accompanied poles and gators, too!

I had an old pair of Tubbs that I found to be less desirable, the binding system on them wouldn't stay tight on steep ascent. However, this new design is rad. I love the ease of getting in and out of them, and feel like they hold tight and secure. The weight and balance of breaking trail in deep snow felt great too. All in all, the Tubb Frontiers are a great snowshoe and I highly recommend to anyone that's looking for something for casual to more intense purposes. I've used these a couple of times now, once to hike 6 miles into a Yurt w/ a fairly heavy pack, and another to summit a moderate peak with only a snowboard on my back. They held up great in both scenarios.

The winters this year hit week long stretches of single digit temperatures, and I realized I didn't own a real coat, instead a lot of jackets. Jackets are awesome when you want to layer up and get active in the conditions, but for something that demands a casual setting, this has to be your go to! It's hands down the best coat I've ever owned. It has the look and style of a Canada Goose coat but with the qualities of Patagonia. The placement of the pockets are amazing and the fit is comfortably roomie, extending down to my upper thigh. I highly recommend this to anyone that needs a solid heavy duty jacket to protect them from the conditions - looking at you east coast peoples!

I bought 2 of these, one for each of my brothers as a gift. They look sharp! You can wear this as an oversized sweatshirt or true to size, both look solid. I ordered it one of each for the two brothers as they have different styles. The material is quality and looks like it will endure a typical wash for a time without stretching or changing shape like a lot of crew sweaters do over time... or maybe I'm just to hard on them. Either way, highly recommend. The fit is true to size if you're going for proper fit.

I bought a pair of these for my Mom for the holidays and she absolutely loves them. She lives in the backcountry of the Wasatch mountains and wanted something she can lounge around the house in and go outside to grab the dogs or a bundle of wood for the fire, with the hard traction soles on these she feels they are perfect for both needs. They run true to size and are probably the most plush and softest thing I've ever felt.

It blows my mind how much a thoughtfully engineered cross teaming show can change the fitness game. This is my first pair of cross trainers, I've been working out in your basic running shoe or casual sneaker for years and was always cramping and taking my shoes off for any type of strength training. The inov 8 f lights are such a well designed shoe neither of those things happen any more. I feel properly supported, weather I'm dead lifting, doing box jumps or even short sprints. I highly recommended them. They breath very well and are extremely lightweight. I wear a size 9.5 and these fit true to size perfectly.

These pants are great, but for some reason the size is off this time around. I bought a small for my 7 year old and they looked like they would fit a 5 year old. Sizing up left us with a gigantic pair she would need a few years to grow into.
