Chris Purkey's Bio

I was born and raised here in the Salt Lake City, UT. So I'm no stranger to the breadth of activities Utah's unique landscape has to offer. In the winters you can find me snowboarding up Big Cottonwood canyon or angling along the frigid stretch of the Middle Provo River. In summers, you probably won't be able to find me because I'll be tucked away in the Uinta's with my family or hiding in a nice river hole throwing flies.

When I'm not playing or being a family man, I work here at Backcountry.com. I'm the Vice President of Gearhead Operations. Our Gearheads are the lifeblood of Backcountry. They’re the first folks customers interact with, and the reason customers return to our site. We wholeheartedly believe service is a differentiator that our business thrives upon. Gearheads pride themselves on expertise; in-depth, technical knowledge of the gear we sell as well as a love of the activities it’s used for… Not to mention, they’re nothing short of total and complete BADASSES. These guys and gals GET AFTER IT outside! I'm passionate about being outside and hell-bent on ensuring that our team helps you find the right ski, saddle or rod.

Whatever it takes to connect you to your passion, we are here for you!

Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I've had the fortune of demo'ing the Patagonia Nine Trails pack a number of times. I'm so satisfied with it that I've decided to pick one up for myself. I've used it for long mountain bike rides in the desert and mountains, and have used it for short to long hikes with my family. I've found the accessible stash pockets super useful for quick grab items, the main pocket is very useful and allows for you to stash snacks, beers, and gear in addition to your bladder. It's really lightweight and overall has everything I'd want in a smaller pack - hence buying one!

Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

I've been fortunate enough to demo this helmet a handful of times now and have been pleasantly satisfied each time. Let me put it this way, I have no recollection of ever thinking anything about my helmet at all during any ride I took it on. In my book, that's a huge win. It's lightweight, it breaths, and the visor is extremely useful. I've got a big ass head and wore the M-XL size and it worked perfectly.

I had the opportunity to demo this pad for a couple of nights in Escalante, Utah on the desert floor. Overall, I found the pad to be very packable and extremely comfy, more than my typical lightweight pads. That being said, I probably wouldn't throw this in my backpacking set up, I'm a stickler for optimizing space in my pack and this takes just a tad bit too much. I would, however, keep this as a go to for car camping adventures!

Somehow I accidentally bought this for my wife, a side effect of being a Backcountry employee (non-stop shopping!). That said, she loves it! She does a lot of yoga and cycling and other cardio activities and this bra gives her the support, comfort and breathability needed. Also, she loves the way it looks.

I bought these for my 4 year old toddler. I was browsing gloves for his sister and he saw these and demanded them. While they do run a little big the stoke level is so high that he doesn't care at all. Plus, they keep him warm and on the hill for the duration of the day. All in all, I'd recommend.

I bought these for my wife to use in her cycling classes and as she starts to ride a bike. Overall, she's very satisfied. They fit to size if you're going of Euro measurements, the US sizing put her at half to full size smaller than what she typically wears. She says these are extremely comfortable, likes the BOA lacing and likes the way they look.

Gus loves this toy. I think the only downside on design/material is that he was able to shred the rope attachment within days. Otherwise, the rubber part will last forever. He loves it and it's a fun change up to the typical ball or kong.
