Brian's Bio

I'm a ski/fish bum stuck in the wrong place. I work for corporate America but dream everyday about enjoying my life by skiing, fishing, hiking, and camping. I grew up being being outside most of the time (Boy Scouts, etc.) and hope to pass along my love of the outdoors to my three girls.

Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I beat this stove up on a recent hiking trip and it kept on going! I cleaned it out and fired it up no problem so I definitely recommend this stove. Packs down small and easy to light--make sure to read the directions the first time around but from then on it should be no problem.

We have used this both car camping and backpacking--for us, anyway, it has worked well in either case. For hiking we left out the large pot since it takes up too much room in the pack. But, for car camping leave it in and give yourself the extra volume for hot water, chili, etc.

If you are extremely concerned about weight then I'd probably go the Alpine 2 route, but having this set has been worth it for us.

Familiarity: I've used it several times

I got this on recommendation from my Gearhead and I have to say I love it! I have used it several times camping and even on our hike to the bottom of the Grand Canyon. I like how easy it is to deflate and roll-up--doesn't take much space or weight in the pack. The added area for the 'pillow' is a nice feature, but doesn't work as well as a separate inflatable one.

Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

We had a set of Yakima cross bars and needed to mount them to our Sienna van and they do the trick. Easy to install and seamless integration with the Yakima SKS key system. Haven't loaded the cargo carrier or ski rack up yet, but that will coming soon (so far so good anyway).

Fit: True to size

This was a gift for my wife--I originally got her the Patagonia Better Sweater Coat, but she changed her mind and got this one instead. She absolutely loves it, the fit, and the style. She got a size small since it is form fitting (though she has a couple of other Marmot coats in a size medium).

Excellent coat she says...
