Ben Kuhns's Bio

My time as an overweight, happy baby was spent in Lincoln, NE. At the age of five I packed my prized set of Legos and made my way to Logan, UT, family in tow, where I would spend most of my childhood. It was with entirely too much red hair on my head that I graduated high school and moved to Salt Lake City to study graphic design at the University of Utah.

Sadly we didn't work out and she left me when she realized my first love was the camera. Nate King and I started our descent into pixel making together in the bowels of dirty, abandoned industry. Years later I find myself photographing high-end piles of carbon tubing and their requisite accoutrements.

No frills here, you either want a classic hoodie with North Face branding or you don't. But really, you want it. You want it because even though this jacket lacks fancy, technical features, it carries that North Face DNA in its fit, quality materials, and the badge you get to wear on your chest.

Throw it in your car for evening lounges around the campfire, or wear it out for a casual night on the town.

This is a great casual piece for those times when you need a little extra warmth without reaching for your more technical options. Fabric is incredibly soft right out the bag and fit is comfortable without being too tight.

Hood draws work well for keeping evening breezes out of your neck. I especially like the implementation of the standard hoodie pocket. North Face have managed to keep the front of the hoodie very clean looking without sacrificing that all too useful hand storage by sewing the pocket inside the jacket.

This is the perfect "stow and go" headlamp. Small and lightweight, stuff it in your bag and forget about it.

At least until it gets dark. Then bust this puppy out for a reliable and easy to use headlamp. Beam spread is great for lighting up a good chunk of the space immediately in front of you, but it does lack the focus to really punch out to distance. Brightness and color modes are all welcome features and work just as expected.

Patagonia sure got the name right when deciding to call this henley a "Daily". Products like this are exactly what I want when stocking my dresser for those everyday needs. Simple, sensible, and comfortable - this shirt has it all.

Colors are excellent and the fit is casual ensuring you feel as good as you look. Can't wait to add more to of these to my wardrobe.

You need only scroll down the page to see that Union's Force bindings have a well deserved reputation for reliability. This being my first Union purchase and I am pleased to say that so far that reputation appears very well deserved.

Build quality is evident the moment you take them out of the box and continues to impress through mounting and finally those first few runs. Feel is stiff, but pliable and instills a confidence that is hard to put into words. You simply know the binding is going to deliver when you need it to.

The North Face Kilowatt is a warm and comfortable cross between a traditional hoodie and one of their tech-ier thermoball products. VIsually you're either going to dig the contrasting panels or hate them. Personally I found the look to be pretty cool, and in the black color way the overall look is relatively understated.

In the warmth department the jacket delivers and then some. It's more than up to task of casual mountain adventures and paired with a more robust shell it should make for an excellent insulating layer.

If you're looking for a slightly lighter flannel than Patagonia's also excellent Fjord series, the Heywood may well be the answer.

Fit, finish, and available colors are all as dialed as I've come to expect from the brand. The shirt is comfortable right out of the bag and I found the fit true to size. The single chest pocket is a nice, stylish touch.

Buy one, or a few, reap benefits. Repeat.

If you want a stiff, directional free-ride board look no further than the Rome Sawtooth.

Tip rocker keeps you floating when it gets deep while the stiffness helps you bust through crud and hit big lines with confidence. The flat section in the middle is a nice addition to stability and the directionality is great for when you just need to point it and go.

I've always been a duffel guy, and it was time to replace my aging travel solution with a more grown-up version. Already a Fjallraven lover based on their trekking pants, I figured I would love their bags.

Sure enough, I was smitten as soon as I had it out of the package. Interior is cavernous and passed my tripod test - an important feature for the travelling photographer who refuses to compromise on bringing gear.

Fit and finish is everything I expect from the brand with simple good looks and rugged fitments. The hidden backpack straps are a welcome feature as are the compressions straps at either end of the bag.

Getting someone their first pair of Chacos is almost as exciting for the giver as it is for the receiver. If you know, you know.

I had the pleasure of introducing my girlfriend to the enlightened shores of Chaco-land. I helped her research and choose the model that best suited her style: double strap, no toe loop, cutest color, etc.

She's very happy in a nutshell. The Cloud footbed is noticeably softer than the standard version. I'm not sure it would be the feel for me, but she loves the additional comfort. The double strap version is certainly striking looking, though I'm not sure it really provides more meaningful adjustment than the single strap versions. If you're buying it, you're probably buying it for looks.

Construction has all the hallmarks I've come to expect from Chaco and I'm sure they will remain a go-to piece of footwear for years to come.

Size Purchased: 12

This is my third pair of Chacos in my life. They last long enough that when it comes time to buy a new pair I tend to agonize over the decision knowing that I will be living it with it for years after.

I decided to take a chance on the mega-version of the classic Z1. The larger straps are incredibly comfortable and the additional of a cast-metal adjustment buckle looks great and provides a premium feel. Footbed and tread provide all the comfort and grip respectively that I've come to rely on Chaco for.

One complaint is the way the heel strap interacts with my foot. I feel like the wider web forces this band to sit lower on my heel than a normal Z1. I have to be more mindful about synching down the main buckle to get my foot to feel solidy locked in; with the normal version I could slip the sandal on and leave the buckle loose without feeling that my foot would pull out unexpectedly.

I've sworn by my Fjord flannels for the last two seasons and finally took the chance to bring my lady on board.

These things are incredibly soft and comfortable right out of the bag. Fit is exactly what you want in a flannel, slightly relaxed and begging for you to cozy up somewhere warm.

Construction is what you expect from Patagonia which is to say it's top notch.

I bought a pair of these to replace some aging denim with an awkward hole in the crotch. Out of the bag the jeans were soft and comfortable. I sized up per other reviews and the fit was perfect.

The DWR treatment is a nice touch, I found myself in some unexpected rain and sure enough the water was beading on the surface of the fabric rather than soaking in.

Fit is relaxed, but not baggy. Overall very happy with the initial performance, I'm hopeful they will stand the test of time.

This is not the piece you wear to summit the mountain, but afterwards around the campfire, it's perfect. Fit and finish has all the hallmarks of a classic Patagonia piece and should remain dependable for years.

Branding is understated and the organic cotton is a nice touch for those of us who try to be cognizant of what we buy.

Does your belt fit, and does it keep up whatever you're trying to keep up? Basically the only boxes a belt needs to check, and the Tech Web Belt does it simply and comfortably.

The webbing is robust and I have a feeling it will not need replacing for a long time, maybe never.

Anytime you come across this many positive reviews of a product, you can be reasonably sure your money will be well spent.

I picked these up for my girlfriend who was in search of a supportive shoe/boot for getting outside as well as everyday use. The fit was true to size and she reported that they were comfortable right out of the box.

The color options are cute, but understated. Overall count us another happy customer.

The Weekender is a steal in the watch world. Simple, clean, and eminently wearable. The relatively small face and casing keeps things understated; if you are looking for a statement piece go elsewhere.

Dress is up or down with a band swap. The included nylon strap is great for getting outside and keeping your wrist cool. I prefer to pair it with a leather strap most days, but the ease of the swap is appreciated.

The Indiglo night light is easy to use and fantastically readable. Overall this thing is a steal, don't hesitate to treat yourself.

You never forget your first one; especially since these things are nearly indestructible.

Since I can't justify owning more of these classic bottles for myself, I've turned to spreading the love of cold beverages amongst friends. The fit and finish on a Hydro Flask is top notch and manages to get people excited about receiving a water bottle as a gift. I appreciate the range of color options available as well as the styles of lids on offer to optimize refreshing beverage delivery.

Despite her initial hesitation, my mother has really warmed up to her first set of trekking poles. It can be tough to admit that our bodies lose the balance and mobility we enjoy when we are younger, but products like this can go a long way towards keeping us active and comfortable.

She particularly likes the light weight and adjustable height; both for storing when not in use and dialing in just the right feel for a day on the trail.

One note worth mentioning is that while they do allow for interchangeable tips, the rubberized tips were not included in the package and had to be purchased separately.
