Ben Brown's Bio

I'm a proud dad, and I'm stoked to share my passion for the outdoors with my wife and two teenage kids. We love to ride and race mountain bikes, paddle rivers, and grab some rock. I'm also a gear nut and really appreciate well thought out and solidly made kit.

Trail pack for carrying the chain saw
5 5

Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

We do a lot of trail work to get ready for the NUES races we put on in the backcountry. Being able to carry your saw deep into the mountains and far from the roads that s crucial to getting the race course tight. This pack handles the big Stihl with ease and leaves plenty of room for all the support tools, fuel, bar lube, a hatchet, water and lunch. Very adjustable and comfortable for many miles on the bike.

Fit: True to size

I've literally shredded these mitts on the mountain bike - oh, but a quick email to Handup and they hooked me up. The replacement pair have been bombproof and sooo comfortable for long days in the saddle that you will want to wear them as you recover with your favorite beverage.

Familiarity: I've used it several times

I've used both Shimano XT and XTR pedals over 20 years for Trail riding and XC racing. Finally getting into the rowdier sport of Enduro racing on a big big bike with lots of travel and now this pedal's huge platform makes total sense. They feel just like the others - but more stable, especially under my five ten Kestrels.

Familiarity: I gave it as a gift but have feedback to share
Fit: True to size

These are my favorite go to mountain bike shoes, I have a pair that are embarrassingly old - but this pair I bought for my 13 year old son who will probably thrash them to the limit racing enduros this year. I like the improvements made to this shoe over mine like the reinforced Velcro straps and the replaceable treads.

Maybe have to get me some.

Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I use a 9', 9.1mm dynamic climbing rope PAS with roughly the center figure-eighted to my harness at the tie-in. One end is set up with a Kong Slyde and a gold twist-lock biner for quick attachment and easy reach adjustment. The other end has my Clepsydra with an ATC. I keep the former clipped on my left harness Loop and the latter to my right. Makes for easy attachment to anchors on one side and my rappel is already set up. I like to do extended rappells usually with a hollow block third hand on my right leg loop. For belaying a leader I snap the Clepsydra into my belay loop. Also works well with my Grigri+.

This works well and saves time and reduces fatigue induced errors on multi pitch trad climbs where you are on and off belay frequently. Also, it requires me to put a load on my ATC and test my rig before rappel while clipped to my anchor. I made this second setup for my son.

I really like this biner with it's keeper wire at the narrow end for holding my ATC in check when 3 pitches up and my tired fingers get fumbly. Also this biner fits the Grigri+
No worries with cross loading or unscrewing either. Very easy to use and easy to get the hang of one-handed.
