Andy Rice's Bio

I moved out here to ski after college at the University of Colorado, and have since stayed. Having the Wasatch less than 30 minutes away from my house in downtown Salt Lake is awesome. In the summers I like to hit up Millcreek canyon or the Shoreline trail behind the U and in the Winters I stick to Little Cottonwood.

I just completed my Master's in Fine Arts at the U and maintain an active studio practice. I love having the Wasatch as my playground when I need to clear my head and spark some creativity. You can check out my website at www.andrewriceart.com

I’d love to answer your gear related questions. Here is how you can contact me, my email is arice@backcountry.com or I am on the Live Chat service Monday and Tuesday afternoons (130-10pm) MST and Thursday and Friday from 1030-3pm. Hit me up! Would love to chat about whatever, but I am especially well versed in skiing and winter sports and then have a good range of trail running under my belt as well.

Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

The Yaktrax are game changers on ice. They do exactly as they say and provide great traction on the ice and slick surfaces. They fit over my shoes and boots well and do not take up hardly any room in my pack for when I need to use them.

I love these pants. They fit really similar to my other favorite pant, The North Face Slim Motion. Denim feels durable, but stretchy and comfortable. Every pant should have a gusseted crotch. It makes it so much easier and more comfortable for any activity. Biking, hiking, running to catch the bus, etc. Thank you TNF for making a functional AND stylish pant.

So far, I am really liking the Kingpins. They hold up great in-bounds, resort skiing and haven't had any issues with either pre-release or not releasing when they are supposed to. I especially appreciate how lightweight they are on the notorious side-steps at Alta. Touring mode is easy to switch to and perform as most pin bindings do on the uphill.

I love the fit and feel of these shirts. They fit great under a a button-up. However, the black and the white colors have an off-colored stitching on the shoulders which I don't really like. I suppose the grey has that same color stitch, but you can't really tell as it blends in with the grey. I can clearly see it in the pics shown and didn't think it would bother me as much as it does.

Got this as a gift for my dad. He had a lighter jacket and a much heavier one, but needed something for in between. This fit the bill great. Good warmth for most winter days, but not overkill. Fit is great and true to size. The Shady Blue is a great color, too!

These are a great pair of underwear. I think I own 9 pair now?? Not much to say except they are comfortable for all day wear. I've worn them hiking and skiing a bunch as well and they do well at wicking sweat and not riding around all over the place. I'd definitely recommend picking up one of these 3-packs.

These are great great boots. Style, durability and functionality all wrapped up in one package. They are leather, so I treated them a bit with a leather-proofer to help extend the longevity.

I'm really excited about these bindings. Having an adjustable toe and and AFD are really great features that finally got worked into a touring binding. Being able to click into a tried and true alpine set up for the downhill without the weight and stand-height of frame bindings like the Duke is awesome. I have only checked them out initially, so once I have some days out on them, I will come back with more feedback. So far though, I'm pumped.
