Andy Rice's Bio

I moved out here to ski after college at the University of Colorado, and have since stayed. Having the Wasatch less than 30 minutes away from my house in downtown Salt Lake is awesome. In the summers I like to hit up Millcreek canyon or the Shoreline trail behind the U and in the Winters I stick to Little Cottonwood.

I just completed my Master's in Fine Arts at the U and maintain an active studio practice. I love having the Wasatch as my playground when I need to clear my head and spark some creativity. You can check out my website at www.andrewriceart.com

I’d love to answer your gear related questions. Here is how you can contact me, my email is arice@backcountry.com or I am on the Live Chat service Monday and Tuesday afternoons (130-10pm) MST and Thursday and Friday from 1030-3pm. Hit me up! Warmer than a hoody, but not quite a down jacket. Great for chilly fall days standing around outside, or catching that last outdoor concert of the season. Fit is perfect for me: long sleeves and longer body length, but not a baggy fit so lays under a shell really well.

Been needing a bombproof hard shell for a while now and finally decided to drop in on the Alpha SV. This thing definitely lives up to its reputation. Tough and durable face fabric that has a great feel to it. Fit is great and I sized a little larger so I could layer no problem. I'm typically between an M and L in jackets and went with the L in this one. So far, super happy with this. I'll come back to update as the winter moves along and I test this puppy out in more conditions.

I have been trying a ton of sleeping bags this past year and the Crosho is a definite standout. 3lbs for a -20 winter bag seems too real to believe. I haven't field tested in the cold and snow yet, but have no reason to think it is not going to keep me warm. Hydrophobic down is a must have, in my book,I'll update this later, once winter camping season gets going. I'm planning some overnight touring trips and stoked to have a warm, light bag to use!

I have been trying out a number of the new Stoic flannels this fall and none have worked out so far because of size issues. I sized up this time and finally got a good fit! Sleeves fit, shoulders fit and good overall length. Fit aside, this is a good shirt/jacket hybrid. Quilted insulation is super light and outer face fabric is super soft. Keeps me plenty warm on its own in 40-50 degree days and layers under a shell well on the colder mornings.
Note: I am typically a Medium in shirts across the board and all the Stoic short sleeve shirts fit in the M. This one I had to go up to a Large size for best fit.

So, my girlfriend, in the past year, has acquired a good collection of Sorel boots. They are super comfy, durable, warm, and stylish as hell. Well, I wanted to jump on the bandwagon, but, was unfortunately having trouble finding a pair in a style I wanted. Finally found them in the Madson Hiker. All I can say is 'wow.' Very comfortable, warm, but not overheating on these variable fall days, and the exact style I have been looking for. I got the Elk/Black color and the color matches the photo. Blue laces are a great touch. I did immediately treat them with a leather conditioner and that slightly altered the color, but only in a good way. I may have to hurry and get the major/buffalo color before they sell out now...

I got these for my mom as a gift and she absolutely loves them. She says they are super comfy and fit seemingly true to size. She has already had some snow and ice at her house and says the tread holds a good grip. With how much she loves them, and how much my girlfriend loves her pair, I would definitely recommend these.

Familiarity: I returned this product before using it

This was too tight and too small for me unfortunately. I am usually a medium across the board in shirts and this one was not quite right. Shoulders felt a little snug and arms were too short (I do have some long monkey arms, but can usually make most shirts work). Quality felt OK, but fabric was a little stiff still. I think that would loosen up over time and with some use. I wish it fit better, because I have been looking for a good quilted shirt/jacket that didn't break my bank.

I am a medium across the board in just about every shirt and this one was way too small for me. Shoulders felt tight and arms were about 1-2inches too short. Fabric feels nice and would definitely be a warm shirt/jacket. The lining is super soft and pretty thick. Outer fabric is soft and not sure how durable it would be compared to some other flannels on the market, but overall seems like good quality. I wish it fit me, because I would wear this all the time in the winter.

Got this hat for my dad after getting tired of hearing him complain about all his current hats. He loves this one. Nondescript and comfy, adjustable fit. He is really active and likes the wicking and fast drying fabric much more than the typical cotton hat.

I got this jacket knowing I would use it around town and not necessarily as a hiking jacket. It is a little heavy to throw in a day pack and the zippers are on the stiffer side, so it doesn't pack up super small. That being said, it is great for what it is designed for, city and urban commuting. The softshell type material is nice, soft to the touch, quiet, and most importantly, stretchy. This is a great feature to have when putting a backpack to go to class and for getting in and out of the car, or taking it off in more cramped spaces, like the inside of a bar. It does breathe great as well and will catch just enough body heat in it to wear as a standalone on more mild fall days (50 degree range, I would say, for me). Has pit zips to dump extra heat as well.
I do wish the chest pocket was larger. It is barely large enough for my phone (iphone 5s), so can't imagine what some of the larger phones fit like. Since it works for me and my needs, I didn't knock down any stars.
Fit is true to size. I got a medium, which is the size I normally wear in most shirts. I can layer a flannel under it, but I don't know how much more I could layer and still be comfortable. Hood fits well and moves with my head, and doesn't rub my beard too much when zipped all the way up.
Gore Tex should be an easy sell, too. Totally waterproof in the heavier rainstorms I have tested it in this past week.

The Nikwax duo is great and a must have for leather boots. Cleaner works well and the leather proofer adds that additional waterproofing back into the material. I've noticed a little color change, but really not as much as I was expecting. It was very minor. Would definitely recommend this as a must have if you have any leather shoes or boots around.

I really like the weight and fit of this shirt. It is a light fabric, so perfect for summer. The white color is slightly see-through, so I would recommend an undershirt.

I just picked this up along with two of the Helinox chairs and am super impressed. It packs down really small and is very light. If backpacking with a group, I would maybe even consider bringing this along with to have a bit of camp luxury at the end of long day on my feet.
It fits in a day pack or larger purse fine, too, meaning you can bring this thing just about anywhere.

I just picked up two of these chairs after an overnight trip with some friends who had them. I was so impressed with how small and light they packed down to. All the comfort you get out of a nylon chair, with just a little stretch to the fabric. So far I have only brought car camping, but I would not hesitate to bring backpacking with how light and small they are.

I love these boots! They did fit a little smaller at first and based on some reviews, sized up a half size. Toes felt a bit tight at first, but that loosened just a tad once broken in. The best part about these boots is their transition between parking lot and getting in and out of ski boots, apres, and then out to dinner. Not so bulky they look ridiculous if wearing just casually, but still all the basic tech features I would want in a basic snow boot.

This is an awesome reservoir. Easy to fill and keep clean, and no weird plasticky taste. The bite valve took a minute to get the hang of, but have no issues on the trail with it. The 3L size fits in most packs in the daypack size range, and larger. I would think a smaller day/hiking pack would be a tougher fit for the 3L reservoir just because the size of the pack. To be safe, I would recommend the 3L for packs about 18-20L and up.
