Andy Rice's Bio

I moved out here to ski after college at the University of Colorado, and have since stayed. Having the Wasatch less than 30 minutes away from my house in downtown Salt Lake is awesome. In the summers I like to hit up Millcreek canyon or the Shoreline trail behind the U and in the Winters I stick to Little Cottonwood.

I just completed my Master's in Fine Arts at the U and maintain an active studio practice. I love having the Wasatch as my playground when I need to clear my head and spark some creativity. You can check out my website at www.andrewriceart.com

I’d love to answer your gear related questions. Here is how you can contact me, my email is arice@backcountry.com or I am on the Live Chat service Monday and Tuesday afternoons (130-10pm) MST and Thursday and Friday from 1030-3pm. Hit me up! Would love to chat about whatever, but I am especially well versed in skiing and winter sports and then have a good range of trail running under my belt as well.

This was way lighter than I was expecting! I sized up to accommodate layering. We've had a wet spring here, so have gotten to put it to the test. So far, pretty happy with it. Me, and my gear have stayed dry. I get most jackets in a large, and wear most t-shirts or button ups in a medium.

Got this bag because most of what I intend on doing in the winter months is towing or sledding my gear in, so weight is not as big a factor. Super warm and comfortable, and the 10x18 stuff size is pretty small all things considered (winter bag, synthetic, etc...).

For how much this weighs, I think it's silly to not have it if you are headed anywhere in the alpine. Take a rescue course, and practice using any and all your gear you will be bringing with the group you are travelling with.

Loving these new short sleeves from Stoic. I think I've picked them all up so far. They have a great fit for my body. Longer fit, and slightly slim. I am only washing in cold water and hanging to dry, because I do fear they will shrink if put in the drier.

I've been eyeing this bag for a number of years now and finally pulled the trigger. I'm way happy I did so, too. Super lightweight and packable. Really warm for how light it is too. I only tried out on a colder night inside, so nowhere near the 30 degree low temp rating. I am excited to put it to the test in some higher alpine camps later this summer. This one is a little bigger and heavier than the UltraLite. I do not mind the extra couple ounces to get the shoulder room.

This shirt fits really good. On the slim side and long enough. I was expecting a heavier material and am pleasantly surprised at how light it is. Definitely will wash in cold water and air dry so it doesn't shrink. Just a tiny bit of colors woven into the fabric, which gives a nice subtle pop.

Just got these today. The fit is a touch off, but hoping to just let them relax and break in a little. The material is a great feel for being cotton. They feel more like a quick dry poly or nylon material actually. They will be great for hiking. The color is great, too and the pattern is really subtle. I normally wear between a 30-32 waist and these in the M fit loose, but work with a belt.

These have a great feel to them. Definitely an upgrade from the standard box store options. I still prefer the Stance boxer briefs, but for the cost, these are awesome. Fit is a bit tight, but not restricting. I'm about a 30-32 waist, and I went with the M size.

I got this for a more urban raincoat and not for using on the mtn. For just around town, it is awesome. I used it up in Portland while it was really rainy and it worked awesome. Longer hem covered my butt on the seat of my bike, so kept that dry. The style is great, obviously. And something I wanted for roaming around the city. I don't want to necessarily have a 'tech' looking jacket and then 'street' clothes under. Nice to have the style in the jacket to match the rest of my wardrobe. True to size fit, but a little roomier cut to layer with. Not baggy, or loose however.

I got this for my girlfriend, and she has been more than happy with it! We weren't really sure what to think of the zippers, or color from the online pics. In person, both are way better than they look online. The color is similar, but better? Not really sure how else to put it, haha. Also, online the zippers looked a little off and just not quite right, but once on, they look totally normal and pretty stylish. They match the style of the jacket well. The fit is great too. She is petite, and has hips and this model is actually cut well for her body type. Very flattering fit for a down jacket. Functionally, very warm and lightweight and a more durable feeling outer material than the Marmot Montreaux. She is about 5'4" and 110lbs and we got the small size.

This thing is going to make airline travel a breeze. Boots pack either on sides of bag, or can load inside with rest of your gear. Helmet pocket, goggle pocket, laptop sleeve... Everything you would normally use for your carry-on fits well. Haven't field tested yet, but tried it all out at home. Definitely will recommend this design and size if planning on traveling.

So, dad's are a wealth of help and information on just about every subject, and I am only realizing how much help dad can be the older I get. To help keep his head in proper working order, I got him this helmet as a Christmas gift. Super lightweight all things considered, good venting and most importantly comfortable. He resisted the idea of a helmet, thinking it would be a bulky and cumbersome object, affecting his skiing, but he can barely notice it. Note on size: had to return the small and get the medium for best fit. It seems it does fit a little smaller than the size chart indicates.
