Alex Dwrote a review of Marmot Variant Insulated Jacket - Men's on March 18, 2019
Familiarity: I've used it several times
This was my first piece I intentionally sought for snowboarding. So far, I like it. It's well designed, versatile, and despite a slight issue with sizing/fit, I look forward to wearing this jacket in varying activities/conditions.
The jacket does a great job keeping me warm, and it's light as well. I used to wear a fleece as my mid-layer, but this jacket is warmer and lighter! I've been wearing a base layer, flannel, this jacket, and a simple NF raincoat/windbreaker in 0-15 F weather snowboarding and I haven't gotten cold since I begun wearing this. Thumb holes are nice, and the sleeves and back aren't restricting at all.
I tried wearing this jogging, and I noticed how easily the wind could get through the sleeves and back, while the front is nice and toasty. That is somewhat expected, and it actually helps wick moisture and prevents me from overheating when layered/worn appropriately.
It would be nice if the section of synthetic down in the front were a bit wider. I'm also not sure if it's an issue of an athletic fit or not, but the jacket is snug around my chest, but a bit loose around my stomach. I did get a size small, but I had to go a size up because of my chest/shoulders. (Note: I haven't had such a sizing issue in a while).
