Great Baselayer for Baby
5 5

Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

Patagonia Baby Capilene is by far our favorite baselayer for the under two crowd. The onesie and pants are made of the same capilene as the adult baselayers, and performs well. It's warmer than a standard cotton shirt, but more importantly wicks moisture away from baby.

The onesie is key for long hikes with baby in a front pack, where your sweat can cause little ones to get wet and cold without proper clothing.

I also love that baby capilene can be hand washed and dried overnight, so we only need 1-2 sets in each size. We layer both pieces with vests, jackets, and puff pants as weather requires.

The fit is true to a wee bit generous. My boys are tall and outgrew other brands (Carter's, Old Navy, Gap) about two months before the advertised age. They can truly wear the Patagonia outfits as described (B is 9 months old and currently in 6-12 month size). If I could make one suggestion to Patagonia it would be for a second set of snaps on the onesie for a more "grow with you" style.

Patagonia baby gear is pricey but has been worth it every time for our family - we love having the option to get our boys outside in any weather!

Perfect First Pack - Toddler Loves It!
5 5

Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

Deuter hit the nail on the head with the perfect combination of function, kid friendly features, and adorable design with the Kikki.

The pack is small, light, and easy for my three year old to get on and off himself. The chest clip keeps it in place during hiking, climbing, and scrambling. The large compartment is roomy enough for a stuffed toy or snacks and a water bottle, and the little side pockets are great for treasures collected along the way.

There are enough adjustments to fit from ~1-5 depending on the age of your kid, and mine also use theirs for preschool. Kikki is made to the same high quality standards as other Deuter products and will last far longer than my little ones need them.

And of course, the bird face and design is absolutely adorable. We always get many compliments and accolades when out and about with these packs. Just picked up a second one for baby brother in green :)

Merino Now Comes With A Collar!
5 5

Familiarity: I've used it several times
Fit: True to size
Height: 6' 0"
Weight: 170 lbs
Size Purchased: Medium

Merino is popular for a reason. It is naturally moisture wicking, odor repellant, dries quickly, and is all-around awesome for the outdoors lover. Various brands have been crafting merino thermal undergarments for years, and more recently stretchy merino hiking tees.

Ibex has introduced a game-changer with a fine-knit merino fabric that maintains all of the benefits, but acts and looks like a more formal shirt.

The Jackson shirt can go anywhere and shine - on the trail, on a boat, to the mountains, to work, or out for dinner. It's versatility and performance make the somewhat steep price tag worth it.

The fit is athletic and slim, which is perfect for me and can be hard to find even with sporty brands. I got a Medium, and the cut is comfortable but fitted enough to look good. The length is great. You wouldn't think finding a longer men's shirt would be a challenge, but it can be a pain and Ibex delivers here. The snaps are easier to do up than buttons and look cool with pearl detail. The plaid makes a great transition between outside play and inside work. After many washings (line dry), lots of sweat, and a fair amount of seawater my shirt still looks as new. The collar is crisp and there are no obvious wrinkles. Awesome.

My only complaint is that the shirt is somewhat itchy (much better after washing), but I think that's the trade-off for any merino product. The performance still outweighs this downside.

Well Designed Water Hat in Any Weather
5 5

Familiarity: I've used it several times
Fit: True to size
Height: 3' 2"
Weight: 29 lbs

We are an outdoors family, so we are always looking for serious sun protection. Sunday Afternoons delivers with so many cool options to choose from! Their hats are lightweight, flexible enough to fold up, water resistant, and dry fast if they get wet.

This is your hat for water adventures. The neoprene chin strap holds it solidly in place even in heavy winds, making the offshore water hat a fine choice for sailing, windsurfing, and boating. Generous mesh panels keep you cool when you’re working hard. The wide brim and cape offer excellent sun protection, and since the hat is water resistant it also keeps rain out of your face when the weather turns. Sunday Afternoons hats are built well and so thoughtfully made for the whole family.

The flip lock brim stays put even in heavy (15-20 knot) winds. Even so, the Offshore Water hat can easily be folded up and tucked into your bag for later. The brim pops open without creasing to its original shape every time.

I have a ton of hair and a somewhat bigger head, and am very comfortable with the large. It sits low, especially with the chin strap cinched down. P has chronic problems finding hats that fit her head and loves the generous fit of the large size for her weekend kayaking adventures. The size can be easily adjusted with the lightweight webbing and clip on the outside of the hat, as well as the slider on the chin strap.

The chin strap easily tightens and loosens, and fits around ears without trouble. It is super burly and looks a little funny, but rest assured that your hat isn’t going anywhere no matter what conditions you find outside.

The inside has a soft lining around the brim, and no hard or itchy features to irritate your heads. This is a huge bonus for us, that not many hat-makers seem to think of!

The Offshore Water hat is built for wet adventures and it delivers on all fronts for your kayaking, sailing, and boating needs. I haven’t seen a better made option!

Great All-Around Hat! Ready to Play
5 5

Familiarity: I've used it several times
Fit: True to size

We are an outdoors family, so we are always looking for serious sun protection. Sunday Afternoons delivers with so many cool options to choose from! Their hats are lightweight, flexible enough to fold up, water resistant, and dry fast if they get wet.

The Sunfire Bucket is super lightweight and would be an ideal pick for long hikes or backpacking in moderate to hot weather. It also works well on the water. Sunday Afternoons hats are built well and so thoughtfully made for the whole family. The Sunfire Bucket is a slightly feminine, simple bucket hat available in several great colors.

The Sunfire bucket can easily be folded up, and comes out looking great every time (no creases or stuck folds).

I have a bigger head/lots of hair (if there are hat sizes I choose large) and am comfortable with the Sunfire Bucket on. There is just enough brim to keep my face and neck shaded, and between the light weight and little vents it is pleasant and cool even on a very hot day!

The chin strap easily tightens and loosens, and fits behind ears without trouble. It is tight enough to keep the hat on in gusts of wind.

The inside has a soft lining around the brim, and no hard or itchy features to irritate your heads. This is a huge bonus for us, that not many hat-makers seem to think of!

The Sunfire Bucket is your perfect hat for a lazy day at the beach or backyard barbecue, but can definitely hold its own for more rigorous paddling, hiking, and boating when you’re ready to play harder.

Ultra Well Thought Out for Any Adventure
5 5

Familiarity: I've used it several times

We are an outdoors family, so we are always looking for serious sun protection. Sunday Afternoons delivers with so many cool options to choose from! Their hats are lightweight, flexible enough to fold up, water resistant, and dry fast if they get wet.

The Ultra Adventure hat is super lightweight and would be an ideal pick for long hikes or backpacking in moderate to hot weather. It also works well on the water, especially with the clever built-in sunglasses lock. Details like these have me swooning over Sunday Afternoons – their hats are built well and so thoughtfully made for the whole family.

The Ultra Adventure hat can easily be folded up, and comes out looking great every time (no creases or stuck folds).

The fit is generous, and easily adjustable with lightweight webbing on the outside to fit a wide range of head sizes. S does well with the size Medium, and has an average to slightly large head. The brim is generous but has enough structure to stay well clear of his face, and does not compromise visibility. The size is true if not conservative given the wide range of adjustments. The wide brim and cape provide ample sun coverage, and the mesh vents and light-weight help the wearer keep cool.

We love the Ultra Adventure hat for paddling and boating, and can also tell that it will be perfect for hiking and backpacking in spring, fall, and summer.

Sunday Afternoons have really thought through the features on this hat and delivered a great product.

New Favorite - Mom & Toddler Approved
5 5

Familiarity: I've used it several times
Fit: True to size
Height: 3' 2"
Weight: 29 lbs
Size Purchased: Medium (2-5 years)

It is almost summer and my outdoors-loving kids need sun protection stat. We've gone through way too many sun hats in this family, and finally scored this year with Sunday Afternoons. We keep winding up with hats that are heavy, small, and don't block much sun.

The Sunday Afternoons boonie is a huge improvement. It's lightweight, water resistant, dries quickly if wet, flexible, and reverses between two fun colors.

The Clear Creek Boonie is light and easy to squish up (crushable€™!) to tuck into the beach bag, and comes out looking like new every time.

The fit is generous, and easily adjustable with a bungy to fit a wide range of head sizes. J is two and has plenty of room in the 2-5 year size, but it does not slump down and get in his face at all (a major flaw in many other hats we’ve tried). He quickly identified the blue Clear Creek Boonie hat as his new favorite. The brim is generous but has enough structure to stay well clear of his face. The size is true if not conservative.

The chin strap easily tightens and loosens, and fits behind ears without trouble. It is tight enough to keep the hat on a little head in a speeding motorboat. It comes with a nifty quick-release so if the hat is ever caught and the kid keeps going, they don't get clothes-lined.

The inside has a soft lining around the brim, and no hard or itchy features to irritate little heads – something most manufacturers don’t think about!

This is J's new favorite hat for beach days, backyard playdates, and hikes. He prefers the blue side but I love having the option to reverse to a more neutral color.

Sunday Afternoons have really thought through the features on the play hat to deliver what toddlers and little kids need in a several choices of cute, functional, sun hats. Finally someone that knows a little bit about kids! In addition to me being pleased that my children have sun protection, they love the comfy rims, bright colors and happily keep SA hats on while playing.
