An acceptable summer mountaineering boot
4 5

Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
Fit: Runs small

Bought a pair used, like new. Beefy leather boot that take crampons well. Used for Spring climbs up snow gullies in Tuckerman Ravine on Mt Washington. Worked alright for a few glaciers in PNW including Rainier. A little rough on the feet for longer days but alright with a thick pair of mountaineering socks. Not bad for winter hikes so long as you keep moving, and look alright with a suit...

Sole not durable - 2 different pairs
2 5

Familiarity: I've used it several times

I bought my first pair of Moabs in January 2017. I didn’t use them until Summer 2017 and did probably 200 miles of backpacking on these, not being my only hiking shoes. In general, they performed as well as they’re supposed to given the well tested brands. In the Fall I noticed a chunk of the Vibram sole came off. They were pretty comfortable still, but was worried I’d get water leaking in.

Merrill replaced that pair w/ another set under their warranty. I’ve hardly used this set at all - a few modest day hikes, and the sole on this 2nd pair is coming off already.

Not sure if it’s Merrill’s problem or the Vibram sole not bonding well, but I went through 2 pairs in way too short a period of time for brands I expect more from. Disappointing.

Are the new classic bindings any good w/ rigid mountaineering boots? If possible, I want the 1 set of crampons for use w/ both La Sportiva Nepals and my regular Vasque winter hiking boots.
