    So Comfy

So I didn't guestimate and actually measured myself at 53cm. The size chart recommended a XS/S, which is what I purchased. For me, it ended up being true to size. I found that when adjusted appropriately at the back of the head, it prevented any slipping or moving while on the trail. The molding felt plush, as did the fabric inserts. Didn't have a problem at all with the vents - my head felt cool throughout the entire ride. So far so good! Can't speak to how well it holds up during a crash though, but the build itself makes me feel confident. As someone else has already mentioned, it's shiny! So, if that's something you're hung up on, you may want to see one in person first..... Aside from the slight costume-y look, I have no regrets. Solid purchase of the year.

      Excellent daily use helmet

      • Familiarity: I've used it several times
      • Fit: True to size
      • Size Bought: XL
      • Height: 6'0"
      • Weight: 187lbs

This helmet works perfectly for my applications. First, the helmet itself has great protection. Also, it doesn't whistle at high speeds like my POC Race. I always wear glasses. The visor perfectly fills that narrow gap above my eyes to keep rain and sunshine from directly hitting my eyes.

      Looks and feels great!

A lot of reviews I read talk about how this helmet is best for safety but sacrifices in the looks department. I disagree! I love the look and the fit. Excited to go hit the trail soon

        Runs small

        • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it

I am lucky to have friends with POC helmets, one wears a small and the other a medium. I tried on both and the small was perfect. Ordered this helmet, this one runs much smaller. It is the exact helmet with the exception of the MIPS. Not sure if that changes sizing but this helmet most definitely runs smaller than others.

        Looks and feels amazing

        • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it
        • Fit: Runs small
        • Size Bought: XS/S

Came super fast, nice packaging. Love the color, looks like a real quality helmet, but unfortunately it didn't fit my head. :( I have a round shaped head so I found the sides of my head had hot spots above my ears upon trying it on. I really wanted to wear it but the fit wasn't right for me.

        No one likes head injuries

        • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

My lady has worn this helmet for a couple of seasons and replaced it after a gnarly crash. The MIPS did its job. She was so impressed she replaced it with the same helmet.

Where Function and Design Come Together

        • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
        • Fit: True to size

Always wear a helmet -- you never know when IT is going to happen. This is not a place I try to save money either. My kids (6, 10 & 12) and I swear by these when we mountain bike. POC is committed to making some of the safest equipment available -- and the addition of the MIPS layer in this model only adds confidence and protection. After a few of what otherwise could have been life-changing wrecks, we were able to carry on largely unscathed apart from some quality trail rash.

These are highly adjustable and the visor makes things a bit easier with that early-morning sun. And true to all things POC, the sharp design/colors is an added bonus.

        Safety first.

        • Familiarity: I've used it several times

The first thing I noticed about the POC Trabec is that it does’t look like most other mountain bike helmets. Its shell wraps all the way around the back of the head, and its vents are fewer, and more spaced than on most current helmets.
Out of the box, the Trabec is clearly a quality piece of kit. It comes with its own draw-string storage bag, like a quality motorcycle helmet. The Race model is hella shiny, and looks slightly like a prop from a sci-fi movie; something future riot police might wear. The image on POC’s website, which looks suspiciously like a 3D render.

        Fits small

        • Familiarity: I've used it several times

This helmet has been a great helmet for cooler days on the bike. I did notice that it fits a little small though. I enjoy the extra protection it offers in comparison to some of my other helmets.

        Life Saver on Downieville Downhill.

        • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

This helmet is pure bomber. For those of you that are familiar with Downieville, I went into the rock garden section at high speed and I was correcting my line to take the faster left side. My front wheel slipped into a rock crevice and I slammed head first into a tomahawk ridge of granite. I had no warning, and I thought I broke my jaw and teeth. Fortunate I did not, I just cut the area above my upper lip.

I was not even dizzy and jumped on the bike right away and raced to the bottom to get the cut washed out and fixed up. It occurred to me that I must of struck my forehead pretty hard and the next day l looked at my helmet. I was blown away! The plastic was cracked and when I peeled it back, ther I saw, a 3/4 inch gash in the hard foam. It obviously took a big hit, and I was fine. I felt so lucky and immediately bought the POC Cortex DH MPS helmet and will buy the Trebec race again..

That crash could have been my last, or at least a serous skull fracture or brain injury. The helmet saved me and I'm grateful. Please pass this review on to POC.

My man took a rough fall up at Deer Valley, only thing that saved him was this helmet! He's had multiple previous concussions from skiing, and said that he's hit his head half as hard as this time and has gotten a concussion- but he walked away from this one head injury free!

        SO WORTH IT!

        Absolutely worth it.

        • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I have two other POC helmets- one ski, and one bike commuter- and I hands down believe they are the best on the market. I picked this one up for mountain biking, and it's perfect. Super lightweight, easy to dial in the fit with the included padding- my head measures at about 57.5cm and the M/L is perfect for me, especially with a headband. I like the small visor- it does pop off if you get a hard enough hit, which is great so it doesn't break. And above all else, I love the protection that it offers. The MIPS tech is super bomb- makes a lot more sense to me especially for biking! Saved my guy from getting another concussion this past weekend- thanks helmet. Best model on the market in my opinion!

        Absolutely worth it.

        Favorite MTB Helmet!

POC was originally a little known company out of Sweden that set out to do one thing, make the best helmet protection for athletes by questioning the status quo in regards to what is considered a safe helmet. The problem with most modern day helmets is they are good at direct impact injuries. Imagine head butting a tree, that’s a direct impact injury. However, most injuries (especially in the outdoor world) are rotational and not direct. Imagine riding your bike and suddenly your front wheel dives into a massive hole. Your mass in most situations doesn’t hit a wall and stop suddenly, your head may hit but your body in a violent display of physics keeps moving. This is where MIPS comes in.

The Trabec Race MIPS solves the rotational problem by distributing you impact in a rotational injury. How is this accomplished? Surprisingly by a simple plastic lightweight cage that’s intended to imitate your brains way of protecting itself in a rotational injury. Studies show it works and hey, that’s pretty cool in my book to give my most valued asset a fighting chance against my activities.

The helmet itself does not claim to be the most breathable, it does not claim to be the lightest, and it certainly doesn’t claim to be bro’er then thou (I’m looking at you Giro & Smith) but what it does claim to be is the best open face helmet protection money can buy for your bike. POC will stand by this and I will as well with two wrecks. The helmet did as it was suppose to, I only walked away with cracked helmets and no concussions.

Sizing - As far as sizing the M/L will work with most normal sized adult male heads. If you think you have a super small head (note the small looks tiny) or a massive noggin size up or down but for the most part the sizing has a massive range and will accommodate most.

Color - An age old question we get is will the white produce less heat then the black color? Science proves that due to the thickness of protection on most helmets there is no discernible temperature change with a white vs black helmet. Unlike a simple black shirt, a helmet is very thick and will not translate heat directly to your head.

          Poor Quality Manufacturing

Ordered this helmet twice and both time the strap was not attached to the helmet. Its a snap/click system that wasn't engaging. Not going for a third time and returned it. Will try another MIPs helmet from another manufacturer.

I also had quality issues with mine. POC uses crappy glue for the internal pads. Brand new from the box and they were detached.
Backcountry was great. They exchanged it.
The 2nd one also had that issue. They exchanged it again.
The third one also had the issue and I ended up glueing it myself.
At the time there weren't many MIPS bike helmets. Now that there are, I will be getting a different brand.

Nice helmet. Very comfortable and cool.

            • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I was a little apprehensive spending this much on a helmet, but I have to say it is very comfortable and nicely fitting. I have a fairly big head (7 1/2 hat size) and the XL/XXL fits perfect. The MIPS is supposed to be good for impact, and feels very durable, but I thankfully haven't had to impact test it yet. My old helmet was just a road helmet and I wanted to get something more mountain specific. Took a bit to get used to the larger size compared to the road helmet, but I do feel more protected. It also vents nicely. My old helmet would heat up a lot on long hot climbs, but the POC doesn't at all. All in all I am very happy with the purchase, and I may get a road biking specific POC helmet as well, I just have to save up a while ;)

I hava a Trabec Race (M/L) that fits perfectly! I went out looking for the MIPS and the M/L is tjght on the sides and the XL feels good in the smallest setting but kind of "slides" a little bit on the head (without feeling loose) front to back and side to side. They tell me this is normal on MIPS, is that correct? Should I get a larger size than usual on the MIPS model?

That business about it "sliding a little bit on the head" sounds like salesman BS to me. The MIPS is about the interface between the helmet's internal parts: some internal rotation is allowed - to absorb rotational force in a glancing blow. I don't see how this would affect the standard safety guideline to get the smallest helmet size that fits comfortably.

I own the non-MIPS Trabec Race and have used it extensively for one season. It's comfort and ventilation compare well to, though don't quite equal my top-of-the-line Giro, considering that the Trabec offers some additional back-of-the-head coverage.

My only issue with the Trabec is that its design results in a really weird tri-hawk-style hat head (the cushion contacts the head as two longitudinal ribs). I ordered a Sweat Hawg velcro for this season, which I hope will take care of that.

What's the deal with sizing? It seems like you have only XS/S and XL/XXL available. What about people with average-sized heads?

            Best Answer

People with average-sized heads are responsible for buying out all the intermediate sizes, that's why only the fringe sizes are left. It's just because they're out of stock, but if you call them up they'll be able to tell you when more are coming in.

Here is a link to POC Sports web site:

MIPS ? Developed in cooperation with Royal Institute of Technology and Karolinska Institute, Sweden. ?

The new MIPS technology mimics one of the safety systems which already exist in the human head. When the head is subjected to an oblique impact, the brain can slide along a membrane on the inner surface of the skull, which reduces the forces transmitted to the brain. This protective feature has, with the MIPS technology, been incorporated into the helmet. In a helmet equipped with MIPS technology, the shell and the liner are separated by a low friction layer. When subjected to an oblique impact, the low friction layer allows a small rotation of the shell relative to the liner. Experimental tests shows a significant reduction of the forces to the brain. Find more information about the tests at

Accident statistics show that the most common accident occurs in an oblique impact to the head, resulting in a ?rotation of the head and brain.

The brain is more sensitive to oblique impacts than radial impacts. However, according to the helmet test regulations, the helmets are dropped vertically onto the impact surface, resulting in a radial force to the head. This is why helmets today have good protective properties for vertical impacts while the protection is not optimized for oblique impacts. MIPS AB has therefore developed MIPS technology to provide substantially increased protection against oblique impacts.
