Good for lightweight missions
I love these bladders. I use them extensively for rock climbing. At the end of the day you can use the remaining water to wash off your bloody, chalked up, and tear stained hands, then roll up the Platypus and stow in the smallest section of your pack along with your shattered dreams of sending. However if you do this regularly, the plastic will eventually crack and soak everything in your pack. I usually go through 1 of these a year and after a while I wonder if I shouldn't just use an empty gatorade bottle and save myself the $10 per year. Make sure you save each cap after you retire the bladder so you have spares. It is great for light / special mission use. Heavy use is not recommended without some sort of bladder protection. I'd buy another if Platypus came up with a Neoprene sock or something, but I've gone through too many, and am going back to the 'free' bottles.

Great, lightweight use! Packs down nice!
I have used these water bladders from Platypus for nearly a decade. I love that they pack down very well and can provide that extra water on trips where you might have limited or no resupply options available. As stated in previous ratings, if you lose or damage the cap, they are essentially worthless. Perhaps Platypus/Backcountry.com can start to sell spare caps for these (hint hint, wink wink).

Light weight but very delicate
Used it only once, just fell off my hand after refilling and the cap got broken. It's not usable anymore without cap.

Great Lightweight Bottle Substitute
I purchased this "bottle" for backpacking. It is lightweight, easy to filter water into, and seems quite durable. I like that it compresses nicely and even rolls up when empty so that you can jam it anywhere. Much better than carrying a bunch of regular plastic water bottles on the trail.

It holds liquid
Holds liquids well and packs down small. What more could you want?

Nice lightweight water bottle
I love these, they pack down great and when they're empty they take up next to no space. Eventually they wear out but not until after years and years of abuse

If you lack space in your pack, Winner!!
I bought one of these since i found my hard bottles were always taking up space in my pack, especially when empty. This thing is durable, light, and most importantly - flexible. I can shove it into my pack when full but then when it's empty i can roll it up and squeeze it into the tiniest of pockets for access later. Try one out if you haven't yet!

Great by itself or w/ hydration bladder
Great volume to weight ratio. I use mine on most outdoor single day trips. For backpacking, I roll this up and forget about it, but it's nice to have a 1 oz backup to a hydration bladder, or a supplemental storage option in case you anticipate a long distance before the next water source. Store upside down in freezing temps to delay the narrow mouth from freezing.

I've always been a fan of Platypus bags for their light weight and packabilitly when not in use. The 2L size (which is actually more like 2.5L) is great when you need to carry more water, but don't want to carry a bunch of 1L bottles, or for when you want a larger water reservoir at the campsite.

Great Travel bag/bottle
This Platypus Platy Plus Bottle is such a great little rubberized style water bottle. I love how packable it is, even in the 1L. It is extremely lightweight, and you can roll it right up and toss it in a bag without even knowing it is there. Lastly, I really like the twist top lid feature. I just don't trust the Push/Pull caps when full with water and in your pack with a lot of your valuables. Overall, awesome travel bottle though, and would highly recommend!

The handle is great and this thing is a tank. It has been through a lot and still has no leaks!

Perfect for Ski Touring
Light weight, collapsible, and useful. Used mostly ski touring and it allows me to lighten up my pack.

Save Weight & Space
After using hard sided bottles that are far too heavy and cumbersome for backpacking for far too many years, I finally converted over to a system of carrying a couple of these (typically the 2L size) and either the Platypus Hoser hydration bag or drink tube. This allows me a more modular drinking system while also having great at camp water supply that takes of virtually no space or weight in my pack when they are empty. Cleaning & drying these are not my favorite part of using them, but that would be the case with any water storage with such a small 'mouth'. Overall, wonderfull product that is durable, lightweight, and simple!

I love platypus in general because it is light and when I am done it rolls up and can be shoved in a pocket. I like this particular design because I have an aversion to drinking after people. The handle made it easier for fellow adventures to easily pour water into their mouths without cross contaminating the bottle or pouring all over their face. Good thing too...I ended up with a stomach virus the morning after our trip. It also made cooking and filling at water sources less clumsy than the standard platypus bottle. I hate wet hands in the winter. I could go on and on, but it is a water bottle...so I won't.

Short Day Trip Bottle
Great for stuffing down your jacket when going for a quick day-tour or throwing in the pack as a back-up water bottle. You never know when you'll need an extra liter or two of water.

Keep it Frozen
I own a couple of these for camping. I keep them frozen in the freezer so they are good to go and so I don't have to dry them out for storage. They hold up really well to being frozen, and they help to keep the cooler cold. Then I have plenty of backup water when needed. The only downside is the bottle is flimsy when drinking from it, and I'm afraid I'm going to cut my hand on the laminated edges, but It hasn't happened yet in the many years I've owned these bottles! You can also use them as "clean bags" if you have a Platypus Gravity Filter.

Nalgenes are dead
I use this waterbottle for everything. I leave one in my climbing bag, my ski touring bag, my car, and in hiking packs. Easy to drink out of, lightweight, easy to pack, and you can clip it to whatever you need.

Whether you want to use this as a portable water bottle or as part of an inline gravity like I using them for. I'm hoping they will hold up to lots of abuse but only time will tell. For those wanting to use them as part of a gravity filter these screw into a Sawyer Mini so no hoses required! Super ultralight and minimal!

Are these 1L bottles BPA free? Also, I would be using this to clip onto my climbing harness, can someone confirm whether this 1L bottle has a handle as shown in the main picture? (some of the user provided pictures appear to be missing the handle). Thanks!
May 20, 2014
Yes, They are BPA free, and this does have the handle. The platybottle does not, which seems to be what reviewers have pictured. This is the plusbottle, which does have the handle.

Is this the old model? Looks like in the pictures. I hope its is as I heard the newer model has a different thread pattern that doesn't work well with the sawer squeeze. Does anyone have experience with this model and the sawer squeeze?

Does anyone know if its safe to use water treatment tablets/drops in these?
March 16, 2012
Absolutely! The material, though flexible, is very similar in performance as other plastic bottles like Nalgene. There is zero taste whether you leave the bottle in the sun or use hot liquids. You can also place in the freezer (making sure you don't over-fill the bottle) if you so desire. They are incredibly durable, light, and will not absorb chemicals, tastes, etc. Hands down the best ultra-light backpacking water bottle on the market!

Will the 2 liter fit in the side bottle...
Will the 2 liter fit in the side bottle pockets on a backpack?
February 10, 2011
Not too likely. Most packs with functional side water bottle pockets are designed to snugly hold a 1L Nalgene, which is 3.5". The 2L version of this is over twice that diameter.
February 10, 2011
It all depends on what pack & side pocket you're talking about. I carry the two liter in my side pocket & not filling it all the way, then using the lower side compression strap to secure the top of the Platy. When it contains less water, I then fold it in half & stuff the entire bottle in the pocket. Pictures to follow.

Write your question here...Is the bottle safe to use if it has been exposed to heat/sun?
August 24, 2009
Yes it is totally safe to use your "Platy" bottle but it might be suspect if it's been exposed to constant UV for years on end. This would destroy anything made from nylon, plastic, PE, PU, etc. The "Platy" bottle can also handle hot water without any problem.

Is there anything like this on the market, exept with a wider opening for easier filling? Looking for a winter bottle that works like a Nalgene when pouring water from a pot after melting snow (exept I want a foldable bottle).

A name brand or a store brand antibacterial denture cleanser is just as effective as any reservoir makers' tablets. If really bad, those effervescent tablets may need help with a soft wire brush as mentioned above.Make a habit after each trip to clean reservoir with the tablets overnight and air dry interior completely before storing back in gear closet.A 32 to 1, water to bleach solution will suffice & is much easier & less expensive. Thoroughly rinse afterwards.
May 14, 2009
Warm water and vinegar with erase any remaining sports drink taste as well. Second the thorough air drying mentioned above. On top of the fridge for added warmth and air circulation.

The plastic material will slightly discolor after repeated usage. This off-yellow color is totally normal & will have no effect on the contents.
