Why We Like The Trail 429 Race XT Mountain Bike
As capable on the climbs as it is on the descents, the newly redesigned Pivot Trail 429 Race XT Mountain Bike builds on the legacy of previous editions. This fully capable trail bike has us confidently hitting new trail all day long, knowing the only thing holding us back is our skills. The new frame is redesigned to function similarly to the cross-country oriented Mach 4 SL, dropping 300g off a size large from the previous Trail 429 and improving pedaling efficiency. Equipped with FOX suspension and a durable Shimano drivetrain, we’re riding an incredibly capable machine that’ll be sure to bring us to trailheads around the world.
Geometry is covered with the new Trail 429, and the longer, slacker, and steeper treatment we see on bikes nowadays hits home with Pivot’s new ride. The seat-tube is also a half a degree steeper than the previous model, and for us out here in the mountains or down in the desert, we couldn’t be more thankful. The steep seat angle allows us to pedal hard up steep gradients without getting out of the saddle, and the DW link works overtime to make sure every watt is transferred onto the dirt.
New to the Trail 429 is a vertical DW link, and with the "Live Valve Ready" frame this bike is dedicated to the ascents as much as the descents. Even with 120mm travel rear and over-forked 140mm front suspension set-up, this bike is efficient. We’re half tempted to throw some XC-specific tires on here and snag some up and downhill KOMS on our local cross-country loops. But true to the enduro name, as tempting as a down-country phenom bike would be, the Trail 429 begs to smash down descents.
Kit is decked out on the Trail 429 with a full FOX suspension platform, and features a FOX Performance GRIP 34, paired with a rear FOX Performance Float DPS. Drivetrain duties are taken care of by the dependable, robust, and lightweight XT spec Shimano group. This full drivetrain is well-known in the industry for being the best value ‘working mans’ group in the industry. The 12-speed cassette provides plenty of range, giving us the ability to throw it in the 10 tooth on high-speed descents, and the 51 tooth for those grueling climbs up. Riding the new Trail 429 XT gives a feeling similar to riding a bike for the first time. This bike is peppy, fun, and we’re fully confident on it when we get in a little too deep.
