Longer and lower geometry updates continue its swath across aggressive trail bikes and enduro machines. Bikes now ride like mini DH sleds and it has us attacking trails with a vigor and at speeds we've never hit before. Pivot’s renowned Mach 6 isn't immune to these tweaks and its angles, lengths, and heights all received updates establishing it as the new benchmark for super capable trail bikes. Pivot utilized feedback from its athletes and performed extensive testing to dial in the perfect combination of progressive geometry and superior pedaling efficiency. It has the chops to tackle the most technical trails at blurring speed, yet pedals well enough for all-day epics and saves energy on transfers to the next stage. The Mach 6 Carbon Pro X01 Eagle Complete Mountain Bike is the enduro's racers dream come true or any rider who likes to tackle difficult terrain at speed, while still having an agile ride that pedals well. Some riders may have a difficult time deciding if the March 5.5 or 6 is the way to go. While both bikes are similar on paper in terms of travel and blur the line of enduro and trail, the Mach 6 is more of a bigger hit all-mountain and enduro bike and the Mach 5.5 is more of an aggressive trail bike.
The Mach 6 Carbon slackens the head tube angle to a gravity friendly 65.75-degrees, and the reach and wheelbase get lengthened as well. Descending, you'll feel more "in" and less "on" the bike, experiencing unflappable stability and confident control at high speeds on technical trails. This bike is light and flickable but isn't afraid to plow. Getting up the mountain is easier with the new 74-degree seattube angles and roomier cockpit keeping the front wheel planted as the rear wheel grabs for traction enabling you to claw up steep and uneven terrain with ease. Tackling what looks like a unridable uphill feature is almost as fun as going down. Smaller riders also benefit from customized geometry in every frame size. While sizes medium, large and x-large see significant increases in reach measurements, sizes small and x-small are more compact, keeping with Pivot's rider-size-specific design philosophy, while still offering the climbing advantages of the steeper seat angle, and nimble, capable handling on descents.
The Mach 6 Carbon continues with the industry's much lauded dw-link suspension, optimized for long travel applications. The dw-link’s anti-squat delivers excellent traction without losing pedaling efficiency. The variable wheel travel path provides unmatched square-edge bump absorption and control on technical descents. The responsiveness and bottomless feel of the Mach 6 is matched only by the exceptionally efficient climbing capability for faster, easier transfers, getting you to the next descent before everyone else. Controlling the 155mm of travel, is a custom tuned FOX Factory Kashima Float DPX2 shock with EVOL air sleeve. The new Float DPX2 features X2 oil flow path to prevent fading and heat build-up on long, rough descents, but in a lighter-weight package. The EVOL air sleeve on the Mach 6’s DPX2 significantly increases small bump compliance and has a very linear, bottomless feel through the stroke. Ultra-low friction Kashima coating offers an incredibly plush feel and on the fly Open, Medium and Firm options with additional adjustment for tuning low speed compression on the open setting, suits a wide range of rider styles and terrain. Matching the Mach 6 Carbon’s rear suspension is the 160mm FOX 36 fork now featuring an EVOL air spring for unparalleled small bump sensitivity. The fork's oversized sanctions and thru-axle provide exceptional stiffness to track through high speed turns and ensure than any line choice, is the right line choice.
Pivot's exclusive hollow core internal molding process and high quality materials create an incredibly durable and light chassis, with stiffness and strength that levels comparable to their DH bike, the Pheonix. The large tube cross sections, double wishbone rear triangle, and large, suspension specific, EnduroMax bearings all contribute to unrivaled frame stiffness and precise handling needed in a race bike. Further evident of the new Mach 6's big hit intentions, it shares the same ultra-stiff clevis and linkage design with its bigger travel brother, the Firebird. Internal and Di2 ready cable routing keeps the lines clean, housing from snagging any trailside booby-traps, and future-proofs the frame. Clearance for tires up to 2.6-inches let you install the latest enduro rubber for maximum grip and comfort.
The X01 Eagle build of this particular Mach 6 Carbon, has a mountain leveling 1x12 drivetrain with 10-50t cassette delivering plenty of range for pedaling up to the goods and sprinting to stop the clock. The build is finished with DT Swiss M 1700 Spline wheels which at 30 mm internal rim, are just right for the 2.3-inch wide Maxxis Highroller II tires. This high-end build with straight-pull butted spokes, patented aluminum Pro Lock nipples, and the 36t star Ratchet System engagement still comes in at a low weight making for a responsive wheelset. Custom designed Pivot bar and stem work as a system to enhance cockpit comfort and control on every ride.

- Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
I was able to hop on the new Mach 6 for a day at Outberbike this fall. Having had the first iteration of the Mach 6 3 years ago, it was nice to compare. The new bike is certainly longer and lower. I rode a small for both, but the new bike had a 40mm stem and felt good, whereas the first mach 6 had a 70mm stem and still left me pretty upright. I'm 5'8", and have always been able to ride either a small or medium for most frames. I rode the medium Mach 5.5 comfortably and would imagine the Mach 6 would have been fine as well, but I wan't uncomfortable riding the size small for 20+miles. The bike is really at home on wide open, fast, rocky descents, where you can stay off the brakes and hold on. On tighter technical climbs, especially switchbacks, the bike did require more steering input, and I can only imagine that would have been more noticeable on the longer medium vs the small. While more at home when the trails points downhill, the Mach 6 still pedals with the efficiency accustomed to the DW linkage.
Before the Mach 6 was released, I thought it had been replaced with the new Mach 5.5, and on paper the bikes look very similar, but those small differences do come to life on the trail. I would give the nod to the Mach 6 if you're riding big chunky terrain and are looking for speed on the descent above all else. If you're planning a big day in the saddle with as much up as down, the Mach 5.5 is probably your huckleberry. In any case, you can't go wrong with either of the new offerings from Pivot.
