While dual-leg power measurement is arguably the end goal for obtaining the best data and range of metrics possible, it also comes with a price tag that isn't for the faint of heart. Pioneer gives riders an affordable way to gather precious power data with its Left Arm Power Meter Installation Kit for Consumer Supplied Cranks. Designed to pair with your current Shimano Dura-Ace, Ultegra, or 105 left crank arm, this kit provides single leg power readings to take your training to the next level without cleaning out your bank account. If you do decide to make the jump to dual-leg in the future, you're able to add Pioneer's drive side upgrade kit for the full compliment of power metrics.
This system uses a strain gauge to measure pedaling force, direction, and overall efficiency as you ride, and it's right on par with industry standards at +/-2% accuracy. The power meter unit has a sleek profile on the inside of the crank arm, and only adds a claimed 22g to your frame. As you pedal, the sensors capture 12 points of rotation at 30-degree intervals, taking a measurement 16 times at each point to ensure accuracy. By recording information at multiple points, Pioneer is able to deliver a single accurate measurement that takes the entire pedal stroke into consideration.
Riding through significant temperature or elevation fluctuations can wreak havoc on your power meter. Pioneer knows how frustrating it is to have to re-zero your device on-course, and how tough it is to recover momentum lost while you freewheel to let the unit zero. To address this common problem, it developed Zero Point Calibration with Active Temperature Memory Adjustment for its power meters. Essentially, the technology allows the power meter to anticipate and adapt quickly to environmental changes so that you don't lose access to accurate data when you need it most.
The power meter is also compatible with ANT+, which makes using it with your favorite fitness apps or other ANT+ compatible devices simple. To further analyze each of the 12 force vectors individually and gain access to Pioneer's new HDPower Metrics and Cyclo Sphere program, you can add the Pioneer cycling computer to your setup.
It's important to note that the Pioneer Left Arm Power Meter Installation Kit for Consumer Supplied Cranks is actually just a box. The magic happens once you drop your crank arm in and ship it off to Pioneer, where it gains a power meter before returning to your door ready to start cranking out the watts.

- Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
This is a great, affordable way to get into training and racing with power. Just get this kit, put your Shimano road crank non-drive side arm into the box, ship it off, and get it back pretty quickly with a power meter installed. The big advantage of Pioneer vs. other comparably priced systems (Stages, 4iii, etc...) is that you have the ability to upgrade down the road as your level of interest and budget allows. Whereas you'd have to just sell your stages arm to upgrade to a full power meter, you can just purchase the right side upgrade kit: http://www.competitivecyclist.com/pioneer-right-side-power-upgrade-kit?skidn=PNR000C-ONECOL-ONESIZ&ti=U2VhcmNoIFJlc3VsdHM6cGlvbmVlcjoxOjEwOnBpb25lZXI= that will open up a whole new world of data, including increased accuracy, dual sided power readings, and Pioneer's own force vectoring metrics.
I assume you don't need a speed and cadence sensor with this unit? What about a magnet? Thanks!
Is this compatible with the new ultegra r8000 cranks?
Is this compatible with a Dura-Ace 7800 left crank arm?
Can this be installed on sram red 22 gxp crank?
Hi Jeffrey, these are compatible with Dura-Ace, Ultegra, and 105 cranksets.
Can this be paired with Garmin edge 1000?
Hey Dante, this can be paired with the 1000 using the Ant + signal. To take full advantage of the measurements Pioneer offers, it is recommended I would recommend using it with one of their computers. Contact me with any other questions at 801.204.4556 or firstname.lastname@example.org.
When I order this left side arm and send you my current arm, I'm wondering how long I will be waiting to get the new arm with power back to me so I can ride again. How much time off my bike will this be?
What clearance do I need for this ? I have an Ultegra Ridley Fenix so should be enough but I am just checking.
Also what apps is this compatible with ? Strava, Wahoo etc..
Hi George, Pioneer recommends 10mm of clearance. You can upload the data to Strava, etc.
So when purchasing it doesn't give you an option to pick crank length...how could it be "one size"?
Ronny, this is a kit that allows you to send your crank arm into Pioneer to have their power meter installed on current generation 105, Ultegra, or Dura Ace; or previous generation Dura Ace or Ultegra crank arms. Therefore, no size information is needed.
Feel free to give me a shout with additional questions, or if you would like to purchase the power meter and crank arm as one pre-assembled unit.

Does this require a frame based magnet? I tried to review the details on the pioneer site and it suggests that you need to install a magnet of some sort. Can you clarify as I don't see any mention in the description here?
There should be no need, if it is similar to the Stages Cycling approach. Everything you need is contained in the module that is affixed to the crank arm. It will do cadence with out the need for a magnet on the frame.
Will there be a Crank based system for Campagnolo?
Thx U Siegfried!
Can this be installed on an XTR Crank?
Looks like a no to me. But 4iiii can do that. For less.
