Simple, fast, and efficient rescue technology.

All of sudden, it seems, the backcountry is as accessible and popular as the taco joint down the street, and while sketchy tacos have their dangers (don't get the pescado especial), you're much more likely to get into a serious accident working your way down a gnarly line than sitting in a corner booth with a cerveza and a pile of carnitas. The Pieps DSP Sport Avalanche Beacon can't prevent accidents, but it will increase your chance of being rescued, or of rescuing someone else, when things go from fun to scary in the blink of an eye.

As its name suggests, the DSP Sport is a trimmed-down version of the DSP Pro, with a simple one-button interface that gives you only three options—send, search, and flag. Just slide the side switch to toggle between transmitting and receiving, and mark burials using the flag button. When you've flagged a signal, the three antennas automatically switch to the nearest unflagged signal for streamlined searching. The Sport has a 50m circular search range and a smart transmitter that, during a burial, automatically switches to the antenna with the clearest broadcasting range, minimizing dead spots and signal traps that can drastically reduce a beacon's effectiveness.

A simple, clear display makes the Sport easy to learn and even easier to use. It has a distance readout, a directional arrow, multiple-burial indicators, and a battery-life display, which provide all the necessary information without cluttering the screen. The Sport is also compatible with the Pieps Iprobe II to help reduce search time, particularly in a multiple-burial scenario. There are also available software updates to keep your beacon up-to-date.

Please remember, a beacon is NOT a guarantee that you will survive an avalanche; get educated, learn to use your tools, travel with trusted partners, and be smart out there.

    Awesome Beacon

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times

Super use friendly, reliable and comes with a comfortable carrying pouch. The only recommendation I have is that the tether connected to the beacon should be lengthened to make fine search a little easier.

    Great beacon

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I have one of these for ski touring and love it... so for Christmas, I bought this for my wife. It is easy to use. Thanks Pieps!

    PIEPS Quality

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times

The operation on this beacon is clear and concise. It is not the smallest beacon on the market, but its level of quality is easy to appreciate. The harness maintains the same quality and high level of comfort allowing you to forget that you are even carrying it. The nice lanyard also included in the box if you choose to attach it to a pocket. My only gripe is the batteries require a screwdriver to remove. I like to be able to remove my batteries between uses. I'm always worried about batteries leaking in expensive electronics, especially with the temperature gradients beacons see. Overall, a fantastic beacon.
    Easily recommended!!

I don't know why you would want a different closure for the batteries. That is what is keeping you from being found or not being found so if you regularly inspect that your batteries aren't leaking, it is fine. Otherwise some corrosion can be cleaned out easily. It's more of the couple years of corrosion that is bad.

Easy to use and works great!

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times

Nice simple mechanisms make the Pieps easy to use. It tracks accurately and comes with a nice sling pouch to wear the beacon. I do wish the beacon was a tad smaller but at the end of the day this is your best bang for your buck beacon hands down!

    Simple and Efficient

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I have had this beacon for 2 years now and love how easy it is to use. It is lightweight, has a great range at 50 meters, and comes with the harness to wear under your shell. With a back light to use when it is dark out on dawn patrol missions or late night tours, you don't have to worry if the worst should happen.

Of course the best beacon is the one you know how to use. It is important to take any beacon out and practice with it before hitting the backcountry, but the Pieps DSP sport makes it easy to get started.
