Tactikka Core Headlamp

While the Petzl's Tactikka Core Pro Headlamp comes with the convenience of a rechargeable battery, should you worry about that battery dying mid-trip this headlamp also accepts three AAA batteries. That being said, on the Tactikka's autonomy setting the battery will last for 160 hours—nearly a week of life, should you leave the headlamp on the entire time. That handy feature not only reduces battery waste, but will save you money.

Worthless Piece of Plastic

Familiarity:
I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

Do not buy this. I used this headlamp exactly once. It got a bit damp, and then would not turn on again. Completely bricked by a small amount of moisture. Backcountry refused to exchange the item and made me go through the manufacturer. Do yourself a favor and buy a BlackDiamond headlamp at REI.

Missing many necessary features

I decided to try this when my BD onsight broke. I am very disappointed and will probably send it back and buy another onsight. Cons: The water resistance is IPX4 which is just splash resistant, the onsight is IP67 which can be submerged. There is no battery state of charge indicator, the onsight has a 8 level state of charge indicator. There is no lockout to prevent accidentally turning on the light and discharging the battery in your pack, the onsight has lockout. If the battery is inserted incorrectly, as is often done to prevent accidental turn on, the battery is either very difficult to remove or the case cannot be closed. The battery is smaller and the runtimes are less than the onsight but probably adequate for most people. Only available in black. The plastic feels cheap and junky. Pros: It comes with the rechargeable battery. The combination of battery issues means you must take a spare battery which means buying another or using AAA. :(. Slightly brighter than the onsight but lacks the onsight's brightness adjustability. The Tactikka has a 3 preset brightness levels which I this is adequate. Has a red LED which is a definite con against the BD onsight. Charges with just a USB cable, the onsight's rechargeable battery needs the provided very small battery charger. Maybe I should be on Petzl's beta test team, I would have sent this back for redesign.

This is my go to headlamp!

Size Bought:
One Size

I have to admit this was my first more high end headlamp I have purchased, but I am really happy I went with this one. I read so many reviews over many different websites about this headlamp and even more so making a concentrated effort to what people had to say about the re-chargeable battery that is included with this device. After owning many headlamps from companies like LL Bean, Black Diamond, and others I have to admit this Petzl Tactikka Core Headlamp is easily my go to for any nightly activity or even going into the attic. Living in Michigan the nights get dark much earlier (sun setting usually around 5:30pm) around late fall and lasting until late winter, so you can imagine this headlamp has been used for many activities. I would probably bore you by typing them all out. But one of the highlights (I tried to include a picture to show what I am talking about; I will see if I can edit this review because Backcountry doesn’t accept .HEIC file type photos at the moment so I need to convert it) was sanding my at home office desk in the dead of winter, 15°F weather, and this headlamp worked flawlessly! It gave me ample light shining on the wooden surface while I was sanding it, to make sure I was exposing enough of the grain of the wood before applying some mineral spirits and then a clear epoxy to the surface to make it smooth. Brilliant! Moral of the story, you can use this headlamp for a multitude of activities, and it will make whatever you’re doing that much more enjoyable when you’re in the dark. With three intuitive to reach light modes (just press the button on top of the headlamp once, twice, or three times right when you turn it on to reach each light setting), crazy long battery life, and quality of battery this headlamp should be in your gear closet. I’ve been on several backpacking trips and extended car camping trips and I only have had to charge the rechargeable battery once prior to going on any longer voyage and it will easily last me the entire trip. I always bring a portable battery bank and Micro USB charger with me in the off chance the battery dies but that has yet to happen to me. Lastly just to touch on the battery quality. I’ve read many other people’s reviews talking about the included rechargeable battery dying on them relatively quickly. I never ONCE have had an issue with a Petzl Rechargeable Battery. I have even bought an extra Petzl Rechargeable Battery and that too has had no issues. Petzl’s batteries are legit. Anything else you read is not true. One thing I forgot to mention! The adjustable headband is extremely comfortable (even for longer use cases) and easily adjustable.

Does What it Should

Nice light. Works great as a light to help me see where I'm going. When the sun comes up, and I don't need my path illuminated. I can easily aim the light up toward traffic to be seen better.
