    Cooler heads will prevail.

Don't let a hot head get the best of you when you're leading a difficult pitch of ice—designed with huge amounts of ventilation and a lightweight, protective design, the Petzl Meteor Climbing Helmet is ideal for ice climbing and alpine ascents. Petzl used polycarbonate for the shell to keep the Meteor lightweight and ready to absorb impact, and the helmet's polystyrene liner is breathable, comfortable, and tough as they come.

The Meteor is designed to sit securely on your head with a flat headband that cinches around your brain bucket for a killer fit, and it folds into the helmet for easy travel. The adjustable chin strap has a magnetic buckle so you can clip it on with one hand. Petzl also designed the Meteor with small clips around the helmet to secure a headlamp during those still-dark alpine starts.

    Light and Comfy

    • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

Used this helmet once. It was super lightweight, easy to adjust and comfortable. Luckily I didn't have to find out how it worked under and impact.

    comfy but not perfect

    • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

I really wanted to love this helmet, but I just couldn't. It's super lightweight and comfortable to wear, but I'll agree with a few of the other reviews below -- the buckle isn't great. It feels flimsy and poorly made, unlike the rest of the helmet, and that worries me a bit for something that's supposed to save your life. That said, the rest of the construction is fantastic. Pretty torn on this one, to be honest.

    Petzl lightweight Helmets - Buckles

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

This review addresses the buckles of Petzl's series of lightweight helmets.
I have the previous version, that is made of the orange foam material only.
The helmet is great, except for the magnetic buckle. Whenever you are climbing on a rock that includes even the smallest amounts of magnetite, the buckle clogs up, the "sand" cannot be removed, and the helmet slides off you head. As soon as you try to scrape of the magnetic sand from the buckle's magnet, new sand hops on. Once you manage to close the buckle, it can be super hard to get it opened and the helmet off your head
(extra tiny bits of magnetite clog the buckle. What a pain.
I checked this item for the single purpose of finding out whether Petzl replaced the magnetic buckle in this new model with a workable alternative. They did not. This helmet has a magnetic buckle as well. Thanks to for including that in the item description. Meanwhile, I bought a different helmet that will stay on your head and come off as well (but is heavier and less nice) - that's how important this small component is.
writing this - can one replace the buckle? Probably ....

    Saved my life

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

Was lowered off the end of my rope and decked from 20ft up. Ended up cracking the back of my helmet. Who knows how bad it would have been had I not been wearing this helmet. Before the fall I used this helmet for about 2 years and absolutely loved it. Comfy and effective.

    Light, but serious safety concerns

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

The helmet that protects you best is one that stays on your head. Unfortunately, I can't recommend the Meteor for the job. The addition of a magnet in the clip mechanism causes grit and stone that's faintly magnetic (like that in Yosemite or the Sierra) to get caught in the clasp. This has caused my helmet to come unclipped mid-climb on several occasions. This past weekend, the helmet became stuck while clipped, and I had to slip it over my head to remove it. Frankly, the only time you should be worried about your chinstrap is when you haven't shaved in a week.

Don't get me wrong, the helmet is fabulously light, very comfortable, and a solid improvement in wearability over my old BD Half Dome. But the persistent clip issues cause me to rate this as a strong "would not recommend".

The attached photo shows the grit buildup remaining after fifteen minutes trying to clean the clasp with a knife.

    Light, but serious safety concerns

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times

DO NOT BUY THIS HELMET - DANGEROUS! The magnetic buckle is not 100% failproof. It can attract bits of magnetic dust, or if a strand of your hair is blown into it during a windy alpine climb, it will not close correctly. I almost lost my helmet three times the last multipitch climb I was on. If I lose my helmet in the mountains I am much more likely to die. Helmets have one job - to stay on - this one does not. Petzl customer service was not impressed by my concerns and have no plans to rectify this situation.

    Good, but not my favorite

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

Overall fits better than others, especially for a smaller head. However feels a bit tall and I tend to bump my head into rock walls while climbing more than I've ever before. It does have a light feel which is good. I ordered size 1.

It's all right but not my favorite

    • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

It's definitely lightweight and you don't totally notice it's there. But I seems kind of tall to me, as in sits very high up on my head. That may be because I got the wrong size though. The Size 1 fits my head snugly, with just barely enough room for some ear warmers. I should have probably gone with a Size 2. I'm likely going to keep it though as a loaner because I like to take people on trips and the more gear I have the more people I can invite :)

Consider Size 1 as "Child's Size"

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I'm a big fan of this helmet, it is incredibly light, comfortable, and gets the job done. It will get some dents in it if you throw it around. I've had one of these for 2 years and used it least weekly/ sometimes daily. I read some negative reviews online about the magnetic closure attracting grit, but I've never had any problems with it. I recently ordered my wife one and purchased the size 1. It is laughably small, and I'm amazed that some adults are able to fit in it. I would consider it a child's size. Returned it for the size 2. I highly recommend this helmet. Buy size 2 unless you are a tiny human being.

    Light and Fast

I have used the Meteor on a few climbs now and have been very happy with it! It is extremely light weight and as product of that it is very comfortable. The Meteor has excellent ventalation, keeping your head cool, that prevents sweat from running down your eyes. These factors make it so that you will always bring it and wear it.

Which you should! I was on a class 3 ridge (Kelso Ridge) and was caught under rockfall from another climber. I was able to jump to safety, but I was super glad I had this on my head. This helmet makes you have no excuses to bring it! You never know what's going to happen!

It loses a star from not being as stylish as other helmets (factors in the decision to wear it), as well as it doesn't cover much of the back of your head.

This is a great helmet and works amazingly. Super, super light weight. Protect your brain!

    Great Helmet

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I really like this helmet. I usually have a hard time finding a helmet that fits my small head but the Size 1 helmet fits perfect. I don't notice it or feel super goofy in it either. This helmet is adjustable in the back which makes for a nice snug fit. The buckle on it is magnetic so it is very easy to put on and take off but is always secure on your head. I definitely recommend this helmet!
