Gully Ice Axe

When the gully gets steep, the steep gets Petzl's Gully Ice Axe. Petzl made this axe light and compact for minimalist mountaineers and skiers. The tapered, steel pick works with the bent shaft's adjustable Trigrest handle to provide versatile purchase on any angle. There are options for an adze or a hammer for cleaning holds or setting pitons. The beveled spike helps prevent tearing up backpacks.

Highly recommended.

I use this as my second tool when one axe is not enough, and I often carry it as a "just in case I want to cross a steep snowfield" option. It's far too short for me to use as a walking axe, but that's not a fault, just something to note. The short length also makes it less than ideal for self-arresting, but it's workable. As a second tool, it really shines. I finally got a chance to put it to good use on some glacier ice this past weekend, and it's far more confidence-inspiring to swing and mid-dagger than its featherweight specs would imply. I have the hammer option and it's amazing how often you can find a use for that thing...

I dig this axe for climbs where you want something light and versatile. I used it on a recent Wasatch climb that had moderate snow, a little easy ice, and rock. The hand rest is easy to adjust with a mitten on to move it up for plunging in snow or down for a handle. It’s super light. I put one dmm ice screw holder on my harness to holster it when not in use and that worked great. Not a substitute for technical axes for anything above ~WI2+ for me. Also quite short, so might want a full sized axe for lengthy uses. I’ll definitely keep carrying on alpine climbs.
