Harness on one end, descender on the other.

Petzl shaped the Am'D Locking Carabiner asymmetrically to accommodate ascenders and descenders for mountaineering, canyoneering, and big wall climbing. This carabiner comes with in various locking styles, from the standard screw-lock to the super secure triact-lock. A weight-savings H-profile and a snag-free keylock nose make the Am-D excellent for any climbing scenario, whether it's a belay or part of an anchor.

    Favorite carabiner ever

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

Ok so this carabiner is amazing. Small enough to use on PAS, large enough to clove hitch into, use as a master point in anchor, etc. It’s specifically designed for ascenders/descenders as well. Some folks say this biner is huge- but I have to scratch my head. It’s not small, but it’s not huge. The Rocklock or Williams- now THOSE are full size biners. This is a perfect middle ground for 98% of technical outings (sport, trad, jugging up a rope, canyoneering.) I love that it come in several locking types as well. The ball lock is my favorite but that is a super divisive locking mechanism- you either love it completely or hate it more than anything. Absolutely love this biner. Nothing better. I carry several of these for general climbing and two live permanently on my Petzl Ascenders.

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I didn't realize how huge this carabiner was going to be! It's great for munter and clove hitches, or a fast masterpoint on a chain anchor, and works well as an all around 'biner, but its a little on the large end of things to be good as a anchor point 'biner.

Great to use with the Petzl Pirana

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times

This carabiner fits perfectly in the Pirana and that is the main reason why I got it. It operates smoothly and cuts off a little bit of weight with the design of it.

    Use on rappel and belay

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

For years I used the Black Diamond GridLock Belay Screwgate. It was the bane of my existence. I wanted a wide H shape locker for my use once I gave the GridLock to a friend, the Am'D more than does the job. I feel secure and protected with the construction and "unlocked" markings which Petzl integrates in their lockers. Shaved some weight off using this as well.

    Use with Petzl Pirana

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times

The ease of use on this is great! I picked this up to use with my Pirana because it is one of the carabiners recommended to fit by Petzl. It is a very tight fit as it is supposed to be. The Pirana is not meant to move while on the carabiner. I got the twist lock and it is so smooth to open! The ease of use with one hand is amazing as well. This is my all-time favorite combo to rappel on when canyoneering! I also picked up a 2nd one to use with my GriGri.

    Use with Petzl Pirana

    Never go anywhere without it!

This is my second Am’D carabiner I’ve bought. I used to use this as a belay carabiner which worked great, though cross loading and inverting were an issue. Now I’ve transitioned to using them for top rope anchors and they work fantastic for this purpose! With a major axis strength of 27kn, they are absolutely bomber!

      Great Belay device carabiner

      • Familiarity: I've used it several times

Love this carabiner for attaching a GriGri to my belay loop. Sure. I have a dozen others that are functional for that purpose, but the design of this is particularly suitable for just that. I think I recall that may be even what it was made for on the Petzl site. Anyway, I like it so much that sometimes I open it, close it, open it close it several times, ya know, for the sheer joy of it. Then I I get back to belaying.
      Anyway, its pretty great.

      Fits Pirana... kinda

      • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

It works as well as any carabiner I have used in my petzl pirana, not very well, but functional. Other than that works like a biner oughta. Shape is fine, light enough, gate and screw lock work seamlessly. Not blown away but it meets my expectations.

      Least favorite carabiner

      • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

This carabiner often cross loads and inverts while being used. It is also very fiddly. The ball is an unnecessary safety feature that only makes the carabiner more frustrating to use.

      delivered wrong biner

I ordered the new Am'D carabiner(H spine) and picture showed on page is also new Am'D at that time. But BC delivered the old version.Too disappointed. That's cheat.~

        delivered wrong biner

So you're rating the carabiner one star for something that can be solved with a quick email to customer service and is completely unrelated to the quality of the actual product? When i saw the three star average, I wondered if something in the new design was faulty. I've been using the older Am'D lockers for years and and they are fantastic. I'd rate them a solid five stars. All of the Petzl gear I own is that way. You're comment isn't a review.
