    Versa Barrier Jacket

Don't be fooled in thinking that a technical piece of cycling equipment can't come without good looks off the bike. Pearl Izumi's Versa Barrier Jacket is a wear-anywhere shell jacket that is equally at home pounding the pavement as it is in the saddle. It is packed full of technical features that are great while pedaling around town and is available in two beautiful colorways: foothllls green or black/smoked pearl.

The Versa Barrier fabric has a soft feel and features DWR coating to provides wind and water resistance and will undoubtedly keep you looking good in cool and damp weather. The drop tail adds additional coverage and protection from rain and mud while on the bike. Subtle reflective accents on the cuffs, collar, and drop tail offer visibility in low light.

Hidden hand pockets keep your mitts warm if you are riding no-handed or if you are off the bike. A hood with draw cord offers excellent head coverage in poor weather.

    • Great looking jacket on or off the bike for inclement weather
    • Versa Barrier fabric is water resistant and breathable
    • Hood adds shelter for your head
    • Drop tail adds additional coverage in wet conditions
    • Reflective accents increase visibility to others

    Useful multi-purpose jacket

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: Medium
    • Height: 5'8"
    • Weight: 160lbs

I have found this jacket to be very useful on and off the bike. It is not an overly thick jacket but the fit is loose enough to add layers for cold winter days. I have worn this off the bike while hiking in 40-50 degree weather with a mist/light rain and this jacket seemed to repel light rain very well and was more than enough to keep me warm.. actually had unzipped for most of hike.

My only con is the lack of pockets on this jacket. There are two fairly large pockets on the front of the jacket (no zipper), but there are no inside or rear pockets.

    I would recommend this jacket.

    A Decent Casual/Commuting Jacket

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: Medium
    • Height: 6'1"
    • Weight: 170lbs

This is a solid jacket for everyday casual riding but doesn't have the tech features to stand out from the crowd. The jacket has a loose cut which allows for layering on cold days but with this in mind it fits true to size. The arms are long enough for most but a little on the short side for those like me with lenghty arms. The drop tail isn't that long but works well enough.

The Versa Barrier jacket primarily blocks the wind and a little water but it's not a rain jacket. It also isn't especially breathable for use in long hard efforts and isn't packable to keep in your bag for emergencies. The jacket's features are minimal but are for the most part well done and seem durable. The hood doesn't flap around when riding, reflective accents are present but unobtrusive, The lining is comfortable, not clammy on bare skin, hand pockets are large, and the zipper is two-way for ventilation.

My biggest complaints are the lack of velcro or elastic at the wrist and lack of drawstring at the bottom hem, both of which allow cold air in. There are no pit zips or chest vents for ventilation and the minimal gloves seem gimmicky but I'll probably appreciate them when I loose my main gloves and have to ride home. A black back would be better for hiding road spray on damp days.

Overall for the price the jacket is decent and reliable, not frilly but it's a commuting jacket that can easily be used off the bike.

An update after a few months of use:

I find myself wearing this jacket a lot, it's quite comfortable! In warmer weather (for me, above 40 degrees) it does get hot on a bike. It blocks the wind nicely but I was hoping the DWR treatment would last longer - it wet through after a drizzly 5 miles. The odd fold out gloves actually work though! They blocked the rain nicely.

Good for casual riding around town.

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
    • Fit: Runs large
    • Size Bought: small
    • Height: 5'8"
    • Weight: 148lbs

The sleeves are too long but overall it does a nice job around town for casual cycling - only.

Runs slightly big.... but that's the cut/design.
