There are many 'decent' vests out there, but an 'amazing' vest must be packable, ultralight, and provide a solid barrier against both the wind and rain. Oh, and it also needs to breathe. Not surprisingly, the Pearl Izumi P.R.O. Barrier Lite Vest succeeds on all accounts. It blocks the elements and lets body heat escape, yet is so unobtrusive when tucked away in your jersey pocket that you won't think twice about stuffing it in there alongside your other riding essentials.
The vest was constructed using Pearl Izumi's P.R.O. Barrier Lite fabric. This is a lightweight, breathable material that's perfectly suited for the sort of weather changes that we often face during a volatile spring afternoon on the road. Made from tightly-woven monofilament materials, the Barrier Lite fabric provides you with protection from the elements while still allowing your torso to breathe and avoid moisture overload. Its versatility is one reason to use it as a wind breaker on high-speed descents, a rain protector during flash storms in the summer, or even as an extra layer to take along for winter rides -- just in case.
The vest has been anatomically designed to allow a layer underneath it, yet at the same time, it's cut close enough to the body to prevent excess fabric from flapping in the wind. Panels of Softshell Lite were also added to the composition, adding a bit of stretch to the vest. Elasticized hem and arm holes maintain a secure fit over your jersey, and the full-length front zipper makes entry and exit of the vest while riding an easy task. Rounding out the construction, Izumi includes reflective accents that increase your visibility to motorists in low-light conditions.
- A lightweight, packable vest

Sizing is small. Order one size up

Great looking product. Sizing is small. Order one size up
Love the yellow
- Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
Overall a really nice vest that is stretchy and fits true to size, maybe a tiny bit small but with the stretch it was not a problem for me. I feel that the yellow high vis fabric does not breathe quite as well as the black material but that is the price you pay for safety I suppose.
Stretchy. Buy a size smaller
- Familiarity: I've used it several times
- Fit: Runs large
- Size Bought: Medium
- Height: 5'11"
- Weight: 184lbs
I am 5'11" 184lbs. I have a 40" chest, and I typically wear a size large in Voler and Assos. I first tried on this vest in a size large, and it was baggy. I then tried a medium, and this was a perfect stretch fit - not constricting. I've worn this over just a jersey, and over a base layer, jersey, and jacket, and the vest fit fine each time. No flapping at speed. I found that Pearl Izumi's outer layer tops all seem to run big for my build.
Runs small to size
- Familiarity: I returned this product before using it
I am 6'1" 205-210 lbs and i wear XL for all my upper body needs. I ordered this in XL and it was very small. I recommend a size up. The quality looked fine, but I can't speak to its performance as it was too small to wear biking. I was not crazy about the glossiness of the material, but that wasn't the deal breaker and it was just a personal preference. I am sure some would like it.
Light, packable, and flaps @ 15mph+
- Fit: True to size
- Size Bought: XL
- Height: 6'0"
- Weight: 210lbs
Bought this vest in an XL. I wear a 44 in a jacket. It has some elastic around the arm holes so I was hopeful it would be quiet when riding. Well it is until about 15 mph and then the loud flapping begins. This is my third wind vest the other two being Castelli and Giro and none of them are quiet at speed. I know the fix but nobody does it and that is a SHORT SLEEVE wind vest. Then there is no flapping from wind in the arm holes at least. Funny Castelli makes a great short sleeve rain short sleeve. Still searching.
What is the difference between the black vest and the black/black vest? Which vest appears in the photos?
Hi Jason, thank you for pointing this out. Black is currently displaying wrong on ours and Pearl's site. Black is completely black in trim and rear. Black/Black has the grey features. This may be updated before you see my comment.
