Eh, it's warm and thin...

I've worn Pearl Izumi gear since 1998 and like the brand. I picked this up for the Hincapie Fondo in Greenville, SC last fall. It's ok. It functions as it should, but there is the slightest nagging itch from the wool. It's not awful and by no means unbearable but if you're sensitive this it could get annoying.

Height: 5’9” Weight: 175 lbs Size: M For this review it would be good to note that I tend to run hot compared to most people Initial impressions: This is a very high quality base layer. The merino wool is high quality and feels soft to the touch. Pearl made the cut on the baselayer to be shorter in front and longer behind to cover your behind when it gets a little wet or cold. Fit: This is definitely a tight fit and does not stretch very much. I tend to run smaller in my torso (usually an M) and larger in my legs. This base layer was a perfect fit in an M for me, but I could very comfortably fit a large as well. I like my baselayers to be pretty tight so I can layer them as needed. This layer did really well with that. First rides: My first ride, I took this out with the PRO Merino Thermal Jersey by Pearl. It was sunny and about 50-55 degrees. I found that that combination was VERY warm and even found myself overheating a little bit. That was my first indication of how warm this baselayer really is. After some further uses, I found that I could wear this baselayer down into the 40s with a light jacket or shell like the AmFib and still be very comfortable. Below 40 degrees and I found that unless I was climbing, I needed another layer to keep from getting too cold. In every case though I found that my core was very warm and this baselayer absolutely did it’s job. It does a great job of pulling the moisture from the body outward. In my most recent ride, I wore this baselayer combined with the PRO Thermal Jersey and the AmFib interval jacket. The combination of those three items allowed me to ride in temperatures below 30 degrees without my arms or my core getting too warm. Overall: This is a great baselayer. The quality is fantastic, the price point is perfect for the product you’re getting. I would definitely recommend this one to anyone in the market for a good baselayer to warm up a summer jersey a little bit or to wear under some of your winter jackets.

Going into fall weather a good baselayer is a must. This Merino base does the trick perfectly. Super comfortable, and wearable in a wide ranges of temps. I've worn this with a mid weight short sleeve jersey, long sleeve thermal jersey, and range of jackets. Having a baselayer that provides and extra breathable layer between your skin and various jerseys seriously increases comfort across the board. I prefer a tight, racy fit for my jerseys and baselayers and the large was perfect for me. Will be updating this as I wear this into colder temps!

Perfect for Fall

As temperatures drop you wear more layers, and the most important layer is a base layer. After that, your layering comes down to the riding conditions, temperature, weather, duration, and intensity. Starting with a great baselayer is the key to an enjoyable ride. This short sleeve Merino from PI will provide just that. It's made up of 58% recycled polyester and 42% merino wool for great warmth and sweat wicking abilities. It's great for those crisp Fall mornings when you choose to wear a short sleeve jersey with arm warmers. I plan on using this late into fall and early winter with a long sleeve jersey and/or jacket as well. It does a great job keeping the core warm while wicking away the sweat from your skin. I wear medium tops in most brands and that remains true for this baselayer. Update: This baselayer is fantastic for cold temps too with proper layering. I've worn it into the mid 30's with a wool jersey and wind-blocking shell and was very comfortable. If you are riding this winter then you need this baselayer. It will make those winter rides enjoyable!
