    Layer up.

Suit up for cold weather rides in the Pearl Izumi Men's Elite Pursuit Softshell Jacket. Boasting windproof warmth and a streamlined fit, this jacket brings high level function at a cost that will leave some cash available for mid-ride stops for hot cocoa and pastries.

The Elite Pursuit Softshell utilizes a mix of Pearl's Elite Softshell, Thermal, and Softshell Light fabrics throughout its construction, providing exceptional weather-resistance and warmth. Accommodating stretch allows freedom of movement and exceptional breathability lets water vapor move from the inside out, even while the outside water is denied entry.

The jacket's construction incorporates myriad thoughtful details to increase comfort, including an internal draft flap lining the zipper to fully block chilly wind gusts. Three rear pockets offer ample space to store essentials, and a contoured fit minimizes excess material and flapping, even while you're stretched out on the handlebars. As an added bonus, reflective elements help keep you visible in low-light conditions.

    • Affordable warmth for cold-weather rides
    • Warm fabrics block the elements
    • Contoured fit designed for the riding position
    • Dropped rear hem provides extra coverage from wheel spray
    • Three rear pockets securely stow essentials

    Not thrilled

Disappointed in this jacket. It does not breath or wick moisture very well. If your just cruising with little effort it is fine, but if you are riding at high intensity it can’t handle the sweat. When I was finished with the ride my jersey and base layer were pretty wet, and I overheated a little during the effort where I normally wouldn’t.

    Awesome Jacket

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I have used this jacket for several rides now, 3 or 4 of them in the low 30's. To include one with TONS of snow melt getting sloped up all over me. The jacket kept me warm the whole time. You can see a pic of my ugly mug from this ride below (I have no idea why the pic is loading sideways). This jacket is very comfortable, and I would buy it again in a heart beat.

I am 5'11 and about 225 lbs, and the XL Jacket fits perfect.

This is one of my favorite jacket for winter. 6.0 194 fits great with a base layer. which it had more colors...

    excellent like all PI gear

I needed a cool weather riding jacket and saw the great price on "cyber Monday" and went for it. Thanks to super service from Backcountry it arrived 2 days later. My initial impression was light weight and superior construction. First ride today (38 miles) at an average temp of 50 degrees didn't disappoint. I wore a light base layer underneath and was comfortable the entire route. On several uphills I unzipped to get more air circulation. Overall this jacket is very breathable so I didn't over sweat on a warmish day. I look forward to trying it out when temps get to 35ish. I'm 5'8"/140 lb and M fits great. Even room for an extra layer or 2!

Wind cheating and excellent heat mgmt

I got the Black/Pepper Green one in large. I have two other PI Softshell jackets, one of which is too warm and lacks ventilation. The other, a 2007 Gavia, has very good sweat management and is still going strong. Since I ride for fitness in the winter I generate a bunch of heat buildup. My specs are 175lbs, 5' 11", 34" waist, 41” chest, average speed @17mph.

So I rode with the Elite Pursuit Softshell today in 36-37 F degree temps and 5 mph wind on a cloudy day. I had a Patagonia capilene 3 mid-weight zip neck base layer and the PI Elite AmFib bib tights. Only the black fabric is windproof softshell, and that protects the tops of the arms, the chest, shoulders and top of the back. The green and bright yellow fabric is their thermal fabric which allows for ventilation. At first, it was a little cool in the stomach area and the arms and sides, but after my warm up, I stopped noticing the coolness. I rode a short 23 mile loop with a tail wind to start and head wind to return. Because my heat and sweat vented so well, I didn't get that chill you get late in a ride when the wind changes. Once I got home, I was happy noting my base layer was dry. Most other jackets leave you sweaty at the stomach and lower back. I can definitely do more mileage in this jacket.

Fit wise, the body of the jacket fit nicely. I don't have a gut, but there would still be some room if I had a small gut. The sleeves are a little long to accommodate the stretched out position of road cyclists, but nothing unusual. The cuffs are a thermal fabric which could get cool for some, but the gauntlet of my gloves shielded that part. The sleeves were not tight, yet there is nothing flapping in the wind at all. I can wear a heavier base layer for colder temps and maybe even a lighter one and get away with it in the mid 30’s. In the low 40’s you could probably just wear a light short sleeve base layer. The back pockets are ample and accessible. The center rear pocket has a water resistant fabric to protect you from rear wheel spray. I am very pleased with this jacket and highly recommend it to riders who push it.

I love this shell!! It keeps the wind & the cold off my chest allowing a very comfortable cold weather ride. Paired with a base layer & a regular jersey, I was very comfortable at 40F... Everyone needs one!!
