Torrentshell Jacket

As the old adage goes "expect the unexpected," so when it comes to travel, hiking, or casual wear, look no further than Patagonia's Torrentshell Jacket to provide steadfast and adaptive weather-proof protection. Equal parts packable and lightweight, it stuffs down into its own hand pocket where its bound to come in handy when afternoon showers interrupt clear skies on an afternoon hike.

Once equipped, the Torrentshell provides both waterproof and breathable performance, meaning you're safeguarded against precipitation without feeling like you've got the Florida Everglades accumulating inside your jacket. Just in case you do get a little warm on the trail, though, the zippered underarm vents allow you to release excess heat quickly so you can keep up the pace even in the rain.

Four Years, Going Strong

Familiarity:
I've put it through the wringer

Original Review, June 2019: Bought this while living in Washington state in 2015, for general use, hiking and backpacking trips, and sea kayaking for rain and wind conditions. After about 3 years in the state on the coast and in the San Juan Islands, I moved to Minnesota where thunderstorms can shake your house hard enough to wake you up, and the rain matches in kind. This jacket has been my rock through 1-3 week sea kayaking trips, 7+ day backpacking trips, 3+ day canoe trips, and tons of day trips in diverse climates for hiking, canoeing, and kayaking. The vents are great, and it rolls up pretty well. The color is great, and the fit is snug (which I like) so size up if you want a bit more room. Just recently started to notice that it feels a bit damp after a few hours of a good downpour. Hoping that a waterproofing treatment revives it! Update October 8, 2020: Waterproofing gave me one more year, but it's time to retire this ol' gal. Buying the Calcite to replace it as I'd like Goretex!

Norway Approved

Familiarity:
I've put it through the wringer
Size Bought:
Medium
Height:

Weight:

I recently took this jacket with me to Bergen, Norway where it rained every day really hard. I even wore it on a zipline in the rain. Pros: kept my clothes dry underneath. Packs great, super light and can fit in any bag or a large purse. Cons: the hood doesn?t provide enough protection when it?s up. Also, although my clothes were kept dry there was like a moist feeling inside the jacket like condensation. And just a reminder this is just a shell, so it does not provide warmth. Overall it did the job and it did it well. I?m giving 4 stars because of the hood. I?m 5?2 170 lbs medium fit good, arms were tight though. My fault for not ordering a large.
