    Torrentshell Jacket

As the old adage goes "expect the unexpected," so when it comes to travel, hiking, or casual wear, look no further than Patagonia's Torrentshell Jacket to provide steadfast and adaptive weather-proof protection. Equal parts packable and lightweight, it stuffs down into its own hand pocket where its bound to come in handy when afternoon showers interrupt clear skies on an afternoon hike.

Once equipped, the Torrentshell provides both waterproof and breathable performance, meaning you're safeguarded against precipitation without feeling like you've got the Florida Everglades accumulating inside your jacket. Just in case you do get a little warm on the trail, though, the zippered underarm vents allow you to release excess heat quickly so you can keep up the pace even in the rain.

    • A packable, lightweight rain jacket for travel or hiking
    • H2No membrane delivers waterproof and breathable performance
    • DWR treatment encourages excess moisture to shed quickly
    • Underarm vents help you dump heat during warmer rain
    • A bevvy of pockets keep small necessities close at hand
    • Adjustable hood, hem, and cuffs seal out chilly weather
    • Packable design stuffs into hand pocket when not in use
    • Regular fit layers easily over most active outfits

    So far so good!

    Familiarity:I've used it several times
    Fit:True to size
    Size BoughtLarge
    Height5` 9"
    Weight155 lbs

I bought this to layer with a puffy coat for cold hikes that could turn rainy. A little snug on the hips but not enough of a concern to return or size up (it'd get too big elsewhere). Fits both of my puffers under perfectly, love the hike neck and large hood! Most importantly, it has kept me dry!

    Great Rain Jacket

I bought this rain jacket for my girlfriend for a recent trip to Seattle. She said it worked great keeping her dry while walking around in the rain and didn't get clammy. She likes the fit and color options.

    Happy and Dry

    Familiarity:I've used it several times
    Fit:True to size

I used this jacket as a rain layer when fly fishing. The sky ended up spitting rain and hail and this jacket kept me dry and warm while packing up. The fit is true to size, I bought a small and had room to layer a little under it. When you get it, it will be totally waterproof, but so keep in mind fabrics tend to wet out the more you use them, so use techwash when washing it to keep it waterproof! Packs down very small, so it's easy to store in your day pack. Great option for a standard rain coat!

Familiarity:I've put it through the wringer

Bought this while living in Washington state in 2015, for general use, hiking and backpacking trips, and sea kayaking for rain and wind conditions. After about 3 years in the state on the coast and in the San Juan Islands, I moved to Minnesota where thunderstorms can shake your house hard enough to wake you up, and the rain matches in kind. This jacket has been my rock through 1-3 week sea kayaking trips, 7+ day backpacking trips, 3+ day canoe trips, and tons of day trips in diverse climates for hiking, canoeing, and kayaking. The vents are great, and it rolls up pretty well. The color is great, and the fit is snug (which I like) so size up if you want a bit more room. Just recently started to notice that it feels a bit damp after a few hours of a good downpour. Hoping that a waterproofing treatment revives it!

I knew this jacket was a popular one for rainy days, and bought it because I love the color, it fits true to size and is great quality. I really like the material which is pretty breathable and durable.

    Meh, unimpressed

    Familiarity:I've used it several times
    Fit:True to size

It will keep you dry for about 20 minutes.... so, if you only wanna be in the rain for a few minutes, it’s the coat for you. If you plan to be active longer, save your money. I wish I had.

Sorry to hear that you're disappointed with the jacket. If you can give me a call with an order number, I'll see if there's anything that I can do for you! 801-402-4655

    Awesome waterproof jacket

Love the fit, I got the navy blue I’m a size medium. I’m 5’2 150 lbs for great, enough room in the arms to layer underneath and is waterproof and wind proof. Wore this on a charter boat for fishing in chilly weather. Layered a base thermal underneath and was worked great

Great coat, sizing didn't work for me.

Familiarity:I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

Coat is lightweight and packs down really small. I ended up wearing it rafting and it repelled water like a champion. Unfortunately, I'm somewhere in between a medium and large. The cut is not great for someone who is larger chested. I did purchase a men's large for my boyfriend who is 6ft and 175-180 and it was a perfect fit for him.

An essential piece for spring time. I picked this up for my fiance as she was in desperate need of a new rain jacket. I also just picked up a new one for myself in the men's version. I'm on my second Torrentshell after the first one served me well for years. This jacekt fits her great and the features are well thought out. Pit zips allow ventilation in warmer temps, adjustable hood keeps it snug on your head and prevents it blocking your vision, and micro-fleece lining in neck allows for soft comfort against your neck and chin. The regular fit allows for easy layering in cooler temps, but the cut is flattering and not boxy. Fits true to Patagonia's sizing. My fiance is 5'4" and about 110 lbs and she found a perfect fit in the size small.

    Essential Rain Jacket

Familiarity:I returned this product before using it
    Fit:True to size
    Size BoughtMedium
    Height5` 7"
    Weight140 lbs

This is the perfect choice for someone who is looking for a well-made rain jacket that is light and packs down small. I didn't notice anything weird about the fit. However I did end up returning this jacket and bought the men's version instead. I ordered the "Tasmanian Teal" expecting the orange part to be a burnt orange color (that's how it appeared on my computer screen), but it ended up being a light peach color which I was not a fan of. I generally prefer the men's colors anyway. I wear a medium in Patagonia women's jackets, but a small in men's. If you are not thrilled about these colors or are looking for a longer fit, then I highly recommend checking out the men's version

I agree that the men’s colors are better! I love the Forge Grey in the men’s version and ordered a men’s small (like you, I wear a medium in the women’s) but found the hip area in the men’s small to be too narrow. I’m contemplating trying a men’s medium but I think it may be too big everywhere else.

    Wish So Bad It Fit

    Fit:Runs large
    Size BoughtXXS
    Height5` 2"

I love this jacket and it is exactly want I was looking for! ... but it just didn't fit me! I got an XXS and the body fit really well, but the sleeves were huge! They were like triple the size of my arm around and pretty long. Even if I adjusted the Velcro at the bottom of the sleeve they were big. I just couldn't live with the sleeves and had to return it. I love all the color options so I wish I could have kept it!

Really lightweight and offers a good DWR treatment material that doesn't make you spend hundreds for one jacket. Good price and would buy again.

Gift for a friend. "It has the high end quality that Patagonia offers in such a lightweight pack able material! I love that the sleeves have Velcro so you can tighten them so water doesn’t enter your sleeves. Since I was planning on wearing it layered on top of bulky clothing, I sized up a & I love the way it looks when it is a bit more baggy (much like on the model). Patagonia wins again. After trying on all the other brands, I couldn’t be swayed! This will be a forever staple in my closet for sure.“

    Fashionable, Competitive Functionality

    Fit:True to size
    Size BoughtMedium
    Height5` 10"
    Weight145 lbs

This jacket is a staple for fashion, but holds its own in the competitive rain jacket market. My main complain about this jacket is the zipper, as it can be difficult to zip and there isn't a cover flap leaving there a potential for water to seep in (hasn't been an issue yet). The fit is FANTASTIC. I am 5'10

I have broad shoulders and wanted to layer is the only reason I purchased a size Large instead of a size Medium! I've taken this camping and used it for everyday. It is packable and packs into into own pocket nicely without a lot of effort. I didn't give it a 5 star because I've had rain jackets that I've liked better.

    Wearing this all the time

    Familiarity:I've used it several times
    Fit:True to size

I'm finding this to be my go-to jacket. I love the color and the fit. So far, I've only experienced it in a super light rain, but was still kept dry. So I'm not sure how well the jacket will perform in heavier rain. The jacket is super light and will need layers during the colder seasons.

Can you zip the Patagonia down sweater jacket into this shell and essentially make it a 3-in-1 jacket like the snowbelle?

This jacket does not have the ability to zip into a 3-in-1 jacket as there are no internal zippers to attach the down sweater into it. But it would still work as a rain jacket to wear over it!

Hello! I am 5'6 and 108lbs. I have a long torso and long arms, but also have petite bone structure. What size would you recommend? After reading many reviews, I cannot decide between an xs or a small. I am not looking for a slim cut jacket in anyway. I am ok if it is slightly boxy, giving me room for layering, however I don't want it to look so boxy that I look sloppy. This jacket will be used primarily as a daily light weight jacket, and also for hiking/ outdoor activities.

Can this jacket be used for snowboarding with baselayers?

This would definitely work to keep any water or wind out while boarding, however, as it's not insulated, you would definitely want some pretty thick mid layers to keep you warm

I am looking to purchase the torrentshell jacket for my girlfriend, but I am curious about the sizing. She typically wears a Medium in everything, rain jackets included. Two years ago I bought her the Patagonia Torrentshell Trench Coat (although slightly different than what is currently shown here: http://www.backcountry.com/patagonia-torrentshell-trench-coat-womens) and she had to go with the Large, mainly because it was a bit too snug in the shoulders. Would I be safe in assuming that the regular torrentshell jacket is sized similar to the trenchcoat, meaning that I should also purchase the jacket in a large? Thank you.

I would think large would be the best bet because she can always tighten it at the bottom and for sure have room for lots of layers. I normally get a medium too but in this case a large would be nice and roomy for a solid shell.

I just want to follow up here, as the OP. I ordered the large for my girlfriend, and she was swimming in it. She could have worn a few jackets underneath, and rolled the sleeves up several times. I ordered the medium and it fits very well solo, or with a medium weight layer underneath. She does not need much more for the mild winters of Western Washington.

I'm 5'8" and 130 lbs and can't decide between a small and medium! I'm from Oregon where it's not super cold, so I don't want it to be bulky with just a T underneath BUT I do want to fit a sweatshirt underneath for those colder days. Suggestions??

Hey Zoie, You would best suited with a Medium in the Patagonia Torrentshell., especially if you want to layer something like a sweatshirt underneath. My fiancee is 5'7", 125 lbs. and she wears a Medium in most Patagonia Jackets. How long are the sleeves? I'm 5'11" and always have issues with the sleeves and body being long enough.

I 6'2" with a wingspan slightly longer than that. Buying my normal size jacket, the sleeves were long enough and then there is a velcro cuff to tighten it up if you need to keep it from getting in the way. Hope that helps a little. You can also get with one of the gearheads on chat and have them send someone to measure a specific size for you.

I'm 5'7", 125#, 34 chest, AND long waisted. Would you guys suggest small or medium?

Hey Laurie, Sounds like you need the small! Medium will give you an extra inch in length, but you would really need to layer up to fill that extra volume. Scroll down and you'll see that Laura LaBar (Backcountry Gearhead) and several customers have provided some helpful measurements and respective sizes! I agree with Geoff Conner's response - go with chest measurement. Sounds like you are at the lower range of a small so I think you might be swimming in a medium. Hopefully that helps!

I am 5'7" and weigh 140lb, I usually wear a size 4 or a small in tops and size 6 in pants. I am debating whether a small or a medium would fit best for me in this jacket, and I would like to be able to layer it. Could you recommend what size would be best?

Hey Heather, Patagonia recommends a a size S for a size 4-6. However, for the best fit, I would recommend going of the chest measurements. A size S is going to fit a 34-35 in chest and a size M is going to fit a 36-37 in chest. Heather, If the extra info helps, I wear a Medium in the Torrentshell, and I'm 5'4'', 140 lbs, 36C, usually a size 6 in pants and a Medium in most tops.
