    Essential Rain Jacket

    • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: Small
    • Height: 5'7"
    • Weight: 140lbs

This is a solid rain jacket. It is light and packs down small, so it is perfect to throw in your backpack when hiking even if you aren't expecting rain. I have the pullover version of this jacket too, which I like, but I wanted a jacket that I could also zip up. I actually prefer the men's fit of this jacket, as it is a little longer. Plus the colors are way better

    Great rain jacket!

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
    • Fit: True to size

On a recent snowshoe excursion, my Marmot precip went from a waterproof shell to a soaked shell in dumping powder conditions. So no bueno. I needed a new rain shell STAT.
I’ve loved Patagonia swag for over three decades, but my current crush is all things Arcteryx. But that girl is outta my league. So, back to the faithful Patagonia product and I wasn’t disappointed. Great price point for the performance and the jacket withstood some powerful recent rainstorms in NorCal. And the color is awesome. Would buy again.

    Not so rainproof

I specifically picked this jacket because it was light, packed up nicely, and most importantly, claimed to be waterproof. My first experience wearing this jacket in the rain was a failure and I was forced to purchase a $5 rain poncho to protect my $90 rain jacket! I wore this jacket in even lighter rain a couple times, and had the same issue of getting wet. I spoke with a representative at Patagonia that suggested the moisture in my jacket may have been from condensation, which I do not believe that to be the case as my back and arms were soaked. I would love to support Patagonia, but am very disappointed with this product.

      Perfect rain jacket

      • Size Bought: Medium

This is a must have item that keeps you dry and looks great. I got the copper ore color and it is a great copper/burnt orange color. The extra zippers help with cooling. I found the jacket to fit true to size.

      Great Jacket!

Super Light-weight, packs down really small. Very Waterproof. It fits a little large, but reasonable to be used as a shell and to layer with other things.

      Great Jacket

This jacket has kept me dry on several occasions. It fits great and gets the job done. When you're not using it, it packs in nicely. I appreciate some of the extra zippers which help with air flow and cooling when i overheat (i run hot).

      Classic

      • Size Bought: XXL
      • Height: 6'4"

A hard to beat stapler rain jacket. I love the fit of this jacket. The jacket is cut just a little longer than normal jackets, making it perfect for staying under my backpacking hip belt.

I bought this as a gift and they love it! He says it' impermeable, fits well and likes the pit vents for breathe ability. This jacket comes recommended.

There are tons of reviews for this jacket already, but it's fantastic! I don't care a lot for the visor because I usually wear a hat underneath anyways but I can see the benefits. The pockets are not mesh vented pockets either, so wind doesn't blow through which is an enormous plus.

      Great Rain Jacket

      • Familiarity: I've used it several times
      • Fit: True to size

This is a reliable and durable rain jacket. Wear it to and from work on rainy days or packable for a rain layer while backpacking. Super comfortable with the added luxury of pit zips. Love this jacket!

What you need when you need it

      • Fit: True to size
      • Size Bought: Large
      • Height: 6'2"
      • Weight: 175lbs

Would I trust this jacket on a 10 day backpacking trip in Oregon during the rainy season, probably not. Would I trust it to keep me dry during a Colorado monsoon, absolutely. This jacket is built with the use in mind, the material is tough, and its hydrophobic ability is great. If you are looking for something on the lighter end which breathes well, I would maybe shy away from this. In all, a great water proof jacket to take hiking, backpacking, or around town on a rainy day.

      Does The Trick.

      • Size Bought: Large
      • Height: 5'8"
      • Weight: 180lbs

My previous rain coat completely wetted out on a recent hike.
So after reading a lot of reviews, I ordered the Torrentshell.
This coat works like a charm. I wore it on a 12-mile hike through a heavy drizzle, and I stayed completely dry.
I was particularly impressed by the hood. It's the largest I've seen in a hiking rainshell.
This coat doesn't provide any warmth - you'll need to wear a sweater underneath it in cold weather. But for hiking most of the year in Southern California, it's totally adequate.

      Comfortable, Minimal Rain Jacket

      • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
      • Fit: Runs large
      • Size Bought: Large
      • Height: 6'3"
      • Weight: 225lbs

Size: I wear a large in all Patagonia jackets (down sweater, better sweater) and the torrentshell was no different. I wear an XL in almost all other t-shirts/jackets but Patagonia runs a little bit boxy in the torso and waistline, so sizing down to a large makes for a perfect fit.

Pros: Minimal rain jacket that's great for taking a beating in the PNW, which gets rain 10 months out of the year. I've taken this jacket on long walks and hikes and it's kept me drier than any other that I own. The full coverage from the hood and pit zippers means you'll be completely protected but also have some ventilation so you don't overheat during warm spring and summer showers.

Like other Patagonia jackets one of my favorite features is the ability for it to pack into its own pocket. I keep a carabiner in the pocket at all times so when I am ready to pack it down I can easily clip it to my backpack or belt loop. The convenience and coolness factor never wears off.

Cons: sizing, but if you know your typical Patagonia fit, go with that.

      Great purchase!

I've had this jacket for about a year now. Unlike some other people I primary use it for cloudy / rainy days around town. I ride my bike to work and always have this with me in my bag. It packs down into it own pocket and is small enough that you won't notice it in your bag. I have been very pleased with how it fits and the adjustable areas around the hood and waist. It also looks good enough that you can wear it without feeling out of place. I have not worn it for it intended purpose in the true outdoors, but could not be more pleased with its overall performance in daily life.

      High Quality Product

      • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
      • Fit: True to size
      • Size Bought: Small
      • Height: 5'8"
      • Weight: 135lbs

When it comes to buying a high quality rain jacket in the $100 price range look no further than the Patagonia Torrentshell. Great waterproof protection from the elements while adding accessories like "pit-zips" for breath ability make this a top add for anyone exploring wet terrain. Fits true to size, has two pockets, a legit hood with tightening capabilities and Patagonia's lifetime warranty. This product is a WINNER!

      Patagucci Takes The Cake Again!

      • Familiarity: I've used it several times
      • Fit: True to size
      • Size Bought: XL
      • Height: 6'1"
      • Weight: 175lbs

This is a great jacket for someone who is looking for simplicity and wanting the best functionality. I have a pretty long toros so finding jackets that are not to wide like most brands in the larger sizes fit, this fit really well in the sleeves and torso. The jacket is of high quality like everything by Patagonia, my wife has the the Torrentshell and has preformed really well over the last few years that she's had it. Thought I would give it a go and glad I did!. See the other reviews for justification. Get it or be drenched!

Is the Patagonia Torrentshell Pullover just as good, because i like the way it looks more but it doesn't have the pit zips. Do you think think the pit zips will be important?

I know this is a very late response- but I HAVE to have pit zips. I won't buy a rain shell without them! They make a huge difference to me between whether or not you end up soaked in your own sweat instead of rain :) gotta have that ventilation!

Any idea if this jacket would be appropriate for skiing? I only go really once or twice a year so I don't think I need a full-featured ski jacket, I'd rather buy one like this that can be used year-round.

I'd say no, it isn't really designed for the punishment a jacket can get from skiing. But if you aren't going into the trees, hitting up the park, or expecting to not take a few falls then this should be ok. And ok is about what you'll get, skiing shells are designed with at least a minimal liner to protect from how cold the outer shell can get, rain jackets like this aren't built that way so you WILL need a pretty good mid layer if you want to ski with this jacket.

I normally wear a large shirt. Will a large...

I normally wear a large shirt. Will a large Patagonia Torrentshell Jacket leave sufficient room to layer underneath? The sleeves which are listed as 35-36"will be about 3-4" too long. Will it be reasonably easy to have the sleeves shortened? The reviews seem to conflict -- will the jacket protect in a heavy summer rain (both from heat and downpour)?

      Hey Mike,

If it helps, typically I wear a medium t-shirt but large in long sleeves and jackets. This rain jacket is designed to be loose fitting and to hand a little long in the sleeves so that you can pull it on without stripping layers and so that it will cover everything underneath. If you normally wear size large than I would honestly suggest you stick with that size for this fantastic jacket. I don't know if I would recommend using this jacket to beat the heat but to escape a summer rain this jacket will be perfect.
