Stand up for your right to these classic shorts.

When you’ve finally worn out your Patagonia Men’s Stand Up Short, grab a fresh pair and raise a glass to another ten years of durable comfort. We know you can’t resist the durable, double-seat construction made from organic cotton canvas, and the thought of a summer day hike or sunny jaunt up a granite trad climb without these shorts makes us shudder, too.

I have great legs for a dude; chicks love these tree trunks. I usually wear Chubbies shorts, but the material wears out a bit quicker than you want a $50 pair of shorts to. The stand-up shorts are like 3x thicker in terms of the fabric itself with what seems to be an enforced crotch area to deal with that chub-rub. The pocket sitch is a weird one, but you can carry all of your things and not look like a total doofus. My only qualm, and that's why these puppies are getting a 4/5, is the waist sizing. I'm a tried and true 31"ish and went up to a 32" because that's what was available. These guys are tight, not like "suck in the gut" tight, but like a "don't wash or dry on hot" tight. I would have rocked the 33" if it was available, but I could only find those on Patagonia's website. I would have done that, but BackCountry hooked me up with a coupon. I'll know for next time. Either way, these things have held up to 6 nights of heavy drinking downtown Nashville and got me two phone numbers from a bachelorette party, so I'll live with em.

One thing's for sure, you can't go wrong with this short. The canvas fabric is durable and lends a classic look - not to mention, those pockets! Can't get enough of them. The hubs owns two pairs, one with a 28 waist and another in a 30 waist and just about lives in them come summer - basically waffling between his Baggies, running shorts, and the Stand-Up shorts. He does agree that these fit a little more snug (in the waist) than the average 29 / 30 waist, hence owning the two different size options. The thighs do flare out, but they're not offensively large by any means (granted, that's my opinion). For size reference, he's 135lbs, 5'9" and wears a Small in Patagonia bottoms and wears a 29 in Levi's.

And while I know there's a version out there for women, I bought a pair of the men's 28 waist, 5in inseam for myself and they fit great. I often like the fit of the men's shorts a little more, especially when they feature a classic rise. The rise hits my natural waist and is a shade relaxed, but super comfy. The fit in the legs is super comparable to my beloved, classic Baggies, which I much prefer in comparison to the tight fit of most women's shorts. I'd rather not waste my time yanking on my shorts. So, ladies, if you like the fit of the classic baggies, the Stand-Up short (in 5in) is well-worthy a try.

    Love these pants!

Picked up a pair of these recently and am very impressed. They feel a little snug at first, but loosen up within a few minutes. Fairly short shorts and because of this compression shorts show when I sit down. The organic cotton is good too very soft against the skin. The real key to these pants is their durability. They really stand up to anything you can throw at them. The button is metal and the stitching is strong. The only thing i don't like is the Velcro back pockets. I don't really have an issue with this, but i think a more durable choice would have been metal snap closures since Velcro will wear out with heavy use. I never use the back pockets mainly because the front ones are extremely spacious.

I figured I would write a review while I am online returning these shorts. I am 5'11'' 150lbs. Normally I wear a 30" waist, sometimes a 31" waist in everything. I originally ordered these in a 30x5 and I am 3" shy of even getting them buttoned. I am returning them to the great people at backcountry for a 32x5 and I think that will still be a tight fit, but I can't go to 34x5.
Why 5 stars? These are awesome and I cannot wait to get a size back that fits!! The material was great, the legs were roomy (without being clown shorts), and the craftsmanship is up to par with Patagonia standards.
Late February in MN and I will have the right size back by the weekend! I love you, Backcountry!

    My Favorites!

I am fond of saying that if I wanted to wear shorts that touch my knees, I would wear pants. The 7" inseam is perfect for my needs. I have owned several pairs of these over the years and I will continue to buy them as they wear out every decade or so. Simple, tough, well-constructed, comfortable and they are great for everyday use on and off the trail.

    Nice Shorts

    • Size Bought: 36

High quality shorts that were exactly what I'd expect from Patagonia. I had to end up returning them due to the fit, but overall these were top notch.

A note on sizing - I have a 35" waist and usually wear size 34-36, but the 36" waist in this short was easily 3 inches too small.

    Great Shorts

Great Shorts for anytime outdoors activity. However, if you are shy about showing your thigh's then I wouldn't recommend purchasing the 5 inch versions . But , seeing as my thighs are glorious and have humbled greek gods , they accent my lifestyle nicely.

      Comfortable and Perfect Length

      • Familiarity: I've used it several times
      • Fit: Runs small
      • Size Bought: 32"

The Stand Up Short is incredibly comfortable and I love the 5" inseam option. Too many of the shorts I find online and in stores have long inseams that run down to the knees and while there's nothing wrong with this inseam length, I prefer to have a short that is on the shorter side of things for hiking and relaxing.

The only issue I have with these shorts is that the waist size is not normal. I ordered a 32" waist, which always fits me in all brands, and these were WAY too tight. I had to order up 2" to a 34" to get them to fit properly. I even have 32" pants from Patagonia that fit fine, so I'm not sure why the waist is so small on these!

Take my advice and order a couple inches larger on the waist than you normally would and feel awesome rocking these for years to come on the trails and on the sidewalks, too.

      Skinny dudes beware

      • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it

I don't have any doubts about the fabled durability of the Patagonia Stand Up Short. The material feels like soft steel forged in the fires of Mordor and the construction is obviously designed to reinforce high impact areas. But I can't really figure why the thighs are so large. Combined with the funny pocket set up(again I recognize this is more about function than style) they literally look like JNCO decided to make short shorts. All it's missing is some psuedo-urban tag patch on the back. If you have big thighs these are definitely the shorts for you. If you have medium or small thighs these will be highly unflattering.

      THE FIT ..

      • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
      • Fit: Runs large

These are sturdy and the 5" inseam could be perfect for not having to cuff them BUT they are SO incredibly loose in the leg.

I have tiny little get-away-sticks but these look like a skirt on me.

I was so frustrated with their look that I gave them to my neighbor, a bicyclist with massive trunk-like legs that are ripped to shreds and he has the exact same complaint.

If you buy them, plan your underwear accordingly.

      Everyday pair of shorts

      • Familiarity: I gave it as a gift but have feedback to share

I bought these as a gift for my father in law and he couldn't be more pleased. These have been his favorite pair of shorts for the last few years and he is always wanting a new pair. He wears them almost everyday so it isn't surprising they are the ideal gift!

      Second pair, and many more

      • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
      • Fit: Runs small
      • Size Bought: 30 Waist 5" length

I first bought this pair of shorts from a retailer nearby my home, but found it to be better priced online. I use these shorts for anything and everything. The canvas comes clean even after I get them dirty every day. The pockets are great for hiking. The 5" shorts are very short so beware your choice of underwear if you wear any with them. The 7" would definitely be the safer choice of the two, but honestly most of the time when I wear them they are so comfortable I don't notice.

      Great shorts, horrible sizing.

      • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
      • Fit: Runs small

I have several pairs of Patagonia's Stand Up shorts and have always loved how durable and comfortable they are. These shorts can literally stand up to years of rough wear. The only issue I have ever had with them is sizing; for some reason the waist size differs significantly from all of the other Patagonia garments I own. These run at least 1" small on the waist, i.e. if you are a 34 order a 35 or 36.

Could be the last pair you buy.

      • Familiarity: I've used it several times
      • Fit: True to size

I wanted to love these shorts; I was looking for a pair of tan shorts made of rugged canvas -which these are. But thighs could be a little snugger and my legs feel a little goofy swimming around in them.

Don't let my personal aesthetic keep you from buying them though! They'll last you a lifetime and I plan to keep them as my 'outdoor' shorts.

      Photo for reference; I'm 5'8

Could be the last pair you buy.

shorts that can take a beating

      • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
      • Fit: True to size
      • Size Bought: 38

You won't find a more durable pair of shorts, and they are very comfortable, except when they are soaked. The fabric, hardware, and construction all indicate great quality and design. Like any cotton short, they tend to chafe when they're wet, and they take a good while to dry. i managed to kill one pair in the late 80s by using them constantly canoeing lakes and rivers - the front button/rivet eventually rusted and broke. i have 2 pair of the 7 inch, each about 15 years old, and the hems are frayed a little...and a pair of the 5 inch i bought a year ago. Caveat - these aren't a slim-fit short. if you don't like oversize thighs, you may not like these.

      Great shorts!

      • Familiarity: I've used it several times

      • Size Bought: 32x7

Everyone should own at least one pair of Patagonia Stand Up Shorts. They are comfortable, reasonable priced and extremely durable. If you have long legs, the 7" shorts are perfect. I had a pair of 5" but they were a little too revealing.

      Hugest thighs ever

      • Fit: True to size
      • Size Bought: 32/7

These are quality shorts. I really wanted to like them. The 7" inseam is why I bought these -- the fashion for men's shorts has become far too long -- though this pair seems more than 2" longer than the 5" inseam which I also tried on.

I returned these because the thigh openings are gigantic. In size 32" the waist is great but the thigh opening is 13" diameter. Something closer to 10" would have been appropriate for me.

Baggy and awkward on the thighs

      • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it
      • Size Bought: 38x7

I bought these for my fiance who strictly wears a size 38. He is 6'4", 240lbs, muscular quads. These shorts were very baggy around the thighs, which is unusual. The poofed out awkwardly, and it looked almost as if he was wearing a skirt. Definitely not the right fit for his build. We still love Patagonia gear, just not these on him.

      Not true to size

      • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it
      • Fit: Runs small
      • Size Bought: 32

I wear a 32 in all brands. These run very small. Order up 2" in the waist. Also, I found them overly thick. They're shorts not work pants. The material in these things would withstand a slide down a mountain on your ass. I can only imagine they would take forever to dry. Pass.

      • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

      • Size Bought: 32-7

It's impossible to kill these shorts. I have been using them for 35 years and still have some of the old ones that might have a stain or possibly a small tear. Ordered some new ones for the summer. You can't go wrong with these. I challenge you to tear them.

5'7", 130 lbs, fairly skinny. 5" inseam or 7" inseam?

Short inseam is really personal preference. Some shorter gentlemen will lean towards the shorter inseam since it might be more proportional to their legs. But at the same time you'll definitely see some tall guys rocking the shorties. (as a note a 5" is a very short pair of shorts in my opinion)
