    From class to the trail.

Patagonia's Refugio Backpack transitions from campus to hiking trails with ease. Just take your laptop out of the pack's padded pocket to leave space for your hydration reservoir. You can also replace your school books with snacks and trekking poles, or you can take it all with you just in case you get inspiration to finally write that essay. Air Flow mesh makes the shoulder straps and back panel comfortably breathable and plush, and Patagonia built the rest of this backpack out of a highly durable polyester, and treated it with a water-resistant coating for protection.

    Great Day Pack

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times

Bought this as a light day pack for hiking in the Southwest. After having it out a few days I can say it is perfect for that purpose! Lots of nice features but never feels like overkill. The hydration pocket easily swallows a 2L Camelback and has good equipment for keeping the mouthpiece at hand but out of the way. Main compartment is big enough for a couple extra layers and the secondary compartment has good organizational pouches for odds and ends. Fits very well and never feels awkward at all--a waist strap is unnecessary for a lightweight day pack, IMO, and would just get in the way. The little stash pocket at the top is perfect to keep your phone or camera in easy grasp. Overall this is a great looking and very functional bag for light day use.

Lots of room in a little bag

    • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

Bought this for a carry on backpack for a climbing trip. Put 5 days of shorts and t-shirts and everything else needed for a four day trip and still fit it under the seat in front of me.

Solid Daypack, definitely happy with it.

I am a big fan of Patagonia gear in general, but this is an awesome backpack, either great for a short day hike or something like that. Also nice trendy bag that you could wear around campus, or a quick business trip, I got no complaints on this guy.

Here is a lil youtube video, I am by no means trying to claim any of the content as my own, I just thought it was a helpful review.

    The best

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I got this backpack for school at the start of last year. It fit my books, laptop, and at times a pair of sneakers comfortably. I work at a summer camp where this bag was also perfect. Great for day hikes, and keeping supplies it in in case of weather or emergencies. I wish the bag was a bit more waterproof ( in heavy storms it gets soaked rather quickly) but the bag does dry very well. I have now had the bag for about 18 months and only now am I looking for a replacement ( most because of the rain damage I have put the bag through, not because of the bag itself) Would and have recommended to friends.

    Perfect size

I bought this backpack for my husband for Christmas. He will mainly use it to carry his laptop and folders between work and home. It is the perfect size for that- not too big age sits close to the body to make it easy to haul around. The grey color with red accents is good-looking too!

      LOVE THIS BAG.

I am a student, an avid climber, and camper.
As a student, I love that I have so much space in this bag! It's not huge like the size of your body and engulf you but it can fit 3 text books and my Lenovo and still look good. I also love that the computer slot is a bit off the floor. It's snowing where I am and I don't have to worry about putting my bag down in the snow or wet ground. Also, its a bit water resistant (from what I've observed). It'll be raining a bit, not mist but not pouring, and the water will just slide off... it's amazing cause I don't have to worry about my personals getting wet.

As a climber, it carries my harness, draws, extra webbing and cordelette (for the bigger climbs/trips), shoes, and my growing trad gear. Oh and some food/snacks. I like that there are compression straps on the sides, that helps a lot unbelievably. I also love the other straps on the very outside/back of the bag, I can clip other things to it as well. The side pockets are perfect for my 32 oz Nalgene bottles. Except, if the bag is full then the bottles have a hard time getting in the top part.

As a camper (and a student who can only skip/ditch so many days), I go out for a weekend and it fits everything I need. Food, hygienic items, extra clothes, etc. The small top pocket makes it extremely easy to have important items accessible.

This bag is sturdy and definitely has taken a beating since being with me. I've also gone caving with it and its standing up to the rocks and the tiny tunnels I've had to drag it through. Really, I don't think anyone could do any worse that me. And it still looks brand-spanking new. So that has to be saying something.

I remember reading someones review or watching a review and he said that it was bottom heavy. I can see that but I personally love that there is a good amount of space on the bottom all the way up. I've had other bags in the past where the top is wide but the bottom is small so I couldn't put a lot in without shoving it to the bottom.

I highly highly highly recommend this bag.

      Great Day-to-Day Pack

      • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I've used this pack daily for the past two-ish years. It's comfortable dragging a 1-2 bigger textbooks such as gen physics, gen chem, or calculus, plus a 13" laptop, charger, pens, notebooks, et c. for a full load of classes. It does well bike commuting ~6 miles round trip with the above weight. The shoulder straps are cushy, the back padding is nice, and it didn't make me too sweaty, even in the Summer heat in central New Mexico. The front pocket organizes your essentials well, while allowing you to stash the various junk I always think I need, while the main compartment is roomy and easy to load. The sunglasses pocket keeps things safe (as long as you aren't too rough), and makes swapping between sunglasses and regular ones a bit more simple. I'm a huge fan of having two mesh-elastic side pockets--that way I can haul a water bottle and coffee around all day without making a mess of an interior pocket.

This is a great backpack for everyday use and I plan on continuing to use it for the foreseeable.

      Still loving it

I hope BC decides to restock this pack or that it hasn't been discontinued by Patagonia. I've had my Refugio now for almost 6 years, and it survived college, dozens of trail runs and hikes, multiple conventions, and at least 15 vacations (getting crammed into airplane overheads, cab trunks, etc), it's still indestructible. Make sure to launder it every once in a while, and the pack will do the rest. I only wish my backpacking packs were this durable!

I've purchased this pack as a gift on several occasions.

I'm personally more fond of the older model, but the most recent version makes more sense from the standpoint of 2015 electronic devices. Mine has a smaller cell phone pouch above the top compartment and beneath the water bladder opening.

      Good Quality Backpack

      • Familiarity: I've used it several times

This pack is really well built. I originally bought it for school but found it was just to small for everything I needed to carry. Four large college textbooks, laptop, 3 notebooks, etc etc. So I went and purchased a larger bag but kept this guy and use it for work or for short hikes to bring lunch with etc. I love the bag and it fits well and is comfortable to be wearing! I would recommend this bag.

      Patagonia, we love you.

      • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

This was purchased to use primarily for school, my nephew heading into fifth grade and it was a hit! It'€™s the perfect size with plenty of space for books and a water bottle, but it doesn't overwhelm his small frame. He says it much more comfortable than his previous school backpacks (from Pottery Barn and Lands'€™ End). The separate compartments make it easy to organize everything and it seems very durable. After six weeks of hard use by an eleven-year-old, it still looks brand new.

His parents couldn't be more pleased with the design and durability. I have purchased the smaller Refugio for my own son who is in kindergarten and it's the perfect size for overnight trips, school and hikes. Thanks again Patagonia for being so reliable!

      Patagonia, we love you.

Not the largest but it's durable

      • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it

I ended up keeping a North Face pack instead and returned this one for a couple reasons. Everyone's opinion and needs are always different but I didn't find 28L to be large enough. TNF Recon bag I bought instead is 32L and it seems SO much larger. Though I really liked the Underwater Blue color, it just didn't have enough compartments and seems like it was just big enough for a short hike or small day pack for a city walk or something. I know Patagonia makes quality stuff but it also was lacking a good amount of padding compared to the other bags I was comparing.

      really nice backpack!

      • Familiarity: I've used it several times

The structure of the bag is great! It is super durable and has a lot of compartments to organize all of your things! The only two drawbacks are that the side pockets are very tight so it is hard to fit a water bottle in them easily... Also the straps are very rough so it kind of hurts if it is directly on your skin, however I would look over this aspect because the backpack is super functional! I love the little compartment at the top for my phone and charger and I can fit my rain jacket in the front along with my pencils/pens and calculator and computer charger for school. This backpack is super for school but since it has all the compartments for pens and computer and stuff I feel as though it might not be the best use of space for an intense hiker! But for day trip hikers it should be quite fine!

      Great school to everything bag.

      • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I have only had this bag for a year and it is a PHENOMENAL bag. I use it primarily as a school bag and it has been perfect. Keeps gear dry in all kinds of weather and the only time my gear was even slightly damp was during a severe storm/tornado conditions. It's super roomie and I can stuff my school things and extra clothes and I still have room for more. I love the daisy chains on it, I clip everything from a rain coat to my climbing gear to it. Over all a great bag and worth the investment.

I'm looking to get this as a gift for someone who rides a motorcycle and takes his computer in his backpack. Can this backpack stand to be on the road in rain and the laptop inside won't get wet?
