    From class to the trail.

Patagonia's Refugio Backpack transitions from campus to hiking trails with ease. Just take your laptop out of the pack's padded pocket to leave space for your hydration reservoir. You can also replace your school books with snacks and trekking poles, or you can take it all with you just in case you get inspiration to finally write that essay. Air Flow mesh makes the shoulder straps and back panel comfortably breathable and plush, and Patagonia built the rest of this backpack out of a highly durable polyester, and treated it with a water-resistant coating for protection.

    • Padded laptop sleeve or hydration reservoir

    Great for travel

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times

It's the perfect size for what I was looking for, which is a backpack for trips with kids. Sometimes that means a carry-on for my laptop and a bunch of stuff on an airplane (snacks, ipads, etc.). Sometimes that means a place to carry whatever random stuff we want to take with us on a day hike or a day at an amusement park. It's comfortable to carry all day and holds plenty for my uses. Build quality seems good, which I would expect from Patagonia.

There are a lot of pockets of various sizes. Almost too many pockets, but that's not really a complaint. I'm still getting used to having lots of pockets after having a one-pocket Timbuktu messenger bag for years and years. They're totally different bags. I really like this backpack for my current uses. People complaining that it's too small should probably check the measurements before ordering.

    To small

    • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

I ordered this for my daughter who's in 10th grade. Love the colors but she put 2 folders & a few other things & that's it. She has 6 classes who all use 1-2 inch 3 ring binders & they won't fit. Unfortunately I've already trashed the box & invoice so I don't think I can return it. Differently read measurements before buying, which I didn't. Just thought it'd be big enough.

Way smaller than you would think

I love my other Patagonia back pack and wanted a black one so I ordered this. It is way smaller than I thought it would be. The measurements are listed so just make sure you pay attention to them because I mistakenly did not. It still seems like a good backpack but just very small. Only good for a young kid in my opinion.

      Best Backpack

      • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

This is my daily driver for work, play, and travel. At one point I've had to fit three laptops in here for work and for others and it held all the gear no problem.

The laptop section keeps your important electronics safe and secure while the larger pocket can easily fit all chargers and documents.

I'm 6'4" and the straps are easily adjustable to where the back rests comfortable at the small of my back and easy on the shoulders.

If you are in the market for a new backpack this is it.

Picked this up to do a little jet setting but it has become the go to day tripper. Styles well and seems to swallow the gear with ease. Patagonia picked really cool colors, which doesn't hurt.

      Love the Work Bag.

Use this bag everyday here at the BC office. Fun color, light weight. Perfect fit for the everyday needs for the office setting. Also, perfect for all the swag we collect here at BC is just awesome! Used my Patagonia bag, at Disney land, vacations, rafting, hiking the arches, canyon lands etc! Best part is always hearing dude, I love your bag. Its fun, light, med size and perfect.

      Great backpack!

      • Familiarity: I've used it several times

This is a great- looking durable everyday-use backpack. When I first got it I thought it would be too small for my husband to fit everything in, but despite its low profile, it's quite spacious. He carries his laptop and other office work to and from home in it. We also used it around Disneyland for five days and found it comfortable to wear for long periods.

      Perfect Everyday work/school backpack

This bag is great! It is the perfect size to carry a laptop and a tablet and whatever else you may need on your daily adventures whether to work, school or play.

        • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

Love this backpack. Certainly built well. Versatile, too; swallows all of my school supplies with room for lunch and jackets etc, or can fit everything for a light campout as well.
Pockets are well engineered. Straps aren't especially comfortable with excessive weight in the bag, but it gets better as it's worn in. As expected.
High quality. Glad I got the "yosemite yellow" before stock ran out, love the colors.

        Patagonia does it again!

        • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I originally bought this bag for day hikes but now I basically use it every day. It is the perfect bag for work, travel and day hikes! Although it's a relatively small bag, it's very functional. I love how you can also use the laptop sleeve for a hydration pack - genius! You will only be able to fit a few textbooks so I would size up to a different Patagonia pack if you're a college kid, but for me it's perfect!

        Really Good

        • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I have never had a Patagonia pack, this one it awesome, but has a few quirks. First off I use it for college and it is hard to fit my laptop and all my books and everything i need for class in it. Also i use a nalgene bottle and it is hard to fit in the side pouches, hoping they will stretch after having it in em long enough. Also while i have the water bottle in it i cant put my coffee cup in the other side. Finally the chest strap came off. I contacted and had another one sent to me, and the same thing happened. I stuck with the second because i do like this backpack so much but it kind sucks not having that strap anymore.

        Great all around day pack

        • Familiarity: I've used it several times

There is much to like about this pack, it is perfect for a trip to work or snowshoeing in the mountains. I have used it to carry my DSLR and a couple lenses, with room left over for cold weather gear. My only complaint is the mesh pocket detached from the lining in the inner pocket. It held gum and Kleenex... Not a deal breaker, but disappointing because it is an otherwise well made and sturdy bag.

        • Familiarity: I've used it several times

Bought it to backpack around San Diego for a week. It was perfect just big enough to hold everything I needed, small enough that it wasn't cumbersome. Great buy especially with the sale price around $50 when I bought it.

        • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I use it every day, on trips and everything and it does not have a tear on it or even a scratch. It can fit all of my stuff. I had this thing for about 9 months and it is the best- get it.

        Great Day Pack

        • Familiarity: I've used it several times

Bought this as a light day pack for hiking in the Southwest. After having it out a few days I can say it is perfect for that purpose! Lots of nice features but never feels like overkill. The hydration pocket easily swallows a 2L Camelback and has good equipment for keeping the mouthpiece at hand but out of the way. Main compartment is big enough for a couple extra layers and the secondary compartment has good organizational pouches for odds and ends. Fits very well and never feels awkward at all--a waist strap is unnecessary for a lightweight day pack, IMO, and would just get in the way. The little stash pocket at the top is perfect to keep your phone or camera in easy grasp. Overall this is a great looking and very functional bag for light day use.

Lots of room in a little bag

        • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

Bought this for a carry on backpack for a climbing trip. Put 5 days of shorts and t-shirts and everything else needed for a four day trip and still fit it under the seat in front of me.

        Pretty cool

        Detailed pocket info

Solid Daypack, definitely happy with it.

        • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I am a big fan of Patagonia gear in general, but this is an awesome backpack, either great for a short day hike or something like that. Also nice trendy bag that you could wear around campus, or a quick business trip, I got no complaints on this guy.

Here is a lil youtube video, I am by no means trying to claim any of the content as my own, I just thought it was a helpful review.

I'm looking to get this as a gift for someone who rides a motorcycle and takes his computer in his backpack. Can this backpack stand to be on the road in rain and the laptop inside won't get wet?

        Hey Amanda,

I would not recommend this pack if you are looking for something waterproof.

I have an email headed your way with some recommendations of other packs to look at.
