Why We Like The Rainshadow Jacket

We never forget to pack the Patagonia Rainshadow Jacket when there's a chance of rain during our backpacking trek, and always keep it at the top of the pack just to be ready in a flash (of lightning). This jacket is extremely light and packable, and H2No Performance Standard ensures the same reliable waterproofing as Patagonia's ski clothing. A 3-layer construction creates a thin, pliable pant that packs surprisingly small so you can take it anywhere you roam.

Great jacket, but not waterproof

Familiarity:
I've put it through the wringer
Size Bought:
XS

I have the Patagonia (Stretch) Rainshadow for about 2 years now. The previous model was 2.5L H2NO. The updated version uses 3L H2NO. The Rainshadow is a good rain-resistant softshell jacket, but far from waterproof. It repels light to moderate rain for a period of time. However, it wets out in a downpour or in rain for a long time, eventually wetting layers underneath the jacket. Depending on how much you use it, you may have to treat and reapply DWR. I wouldn?t say it?s the most breathable jacket out there, but the pit zips do help. The jacket does cut wind exceptionally well. I brought it on a hiking trip where winds were clocking almost 90mph at the summit. It kept me warm throughout despite the harsh winds. I?ve been using the Rainshadow mostly for active use like hiking and cycling when harsh rain is not in the forecast. For the most part, it?s kept me comfortable when I layer with just a wool baselayer at 35-40F. I would layer a fleece or lightly insulated jacket depending how much colder it gets. The thin fabric makes it packable and easy to stuff in backpack/sling bag. I use it in the spring, fall, and winter where harsh rain is not in the forecast. For trips where I need more rain protection, I would go with a hard shell. As for sizing, I find it runs large. I?m about 5?8?, 140lbs, 30-31 inch waist and the XS fits big enough for me to layer an insulated mid layer underneath. Overall, great jacket to have as it has good protection, easy to layer for different seasons, and packable. However, it?s not the jacket I would bring if I need absolute water protection.

Couldn't wait to put it to work

Familiarity:
I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

I received and put it to the test on the same day. I'm a mountain biker and an MTB coach. The day it arrived was rainy. I threw it on over a thermal jersey (36 degrees F) and hit the trails during a break in the rain. And then it started with wet snow. On my initial ride, it shed everything and breathed amazingly. I run/ride very hot and found it breathed wonderfully, enough that I did not become as sweaty as I worried about in a shell. I had the pit zips cracked maybe an inch on both sides. It never felt clammy nor damp. Overall, I'm looking forward to putting this jacket through its paces.
