    R1 Hooded 1/2-Zip Fleece Pullover

With an updated multi-fabric design that enhances stretch, boosts breathability, and cuts down on weight, the Patagonia R1 Hooded 1/2-Zip Fleece Pullover is more performance-ready than ever. Using the same Polartec Power Grid fabric that has made the R1 such a trusted name in versatile outdoor performance, this fleece has the stretch you need for tough climbing and hiking, and the breathability that'll help you excel during higher-output pursuits like trail running and ski touring. Its updated design adds lighter and stretchier fleece at the sides, hood, and harness-line, enhancing breathability and movement where you need it most. Meanwhile, the deep chest zipper allows for added ventilation when you really start working hard, and the snug hood provides an under-helmet fit that'll keep your ears and face nice and warm. The sleeves can roll up easily when you're trying to keep your forearms free on the wall, but will also stay put during winter runs thanks to the convenient thumb holes.

Didn’t take it off for a week.

Definitely my favorite layer. I did a take winter trip climbing Helens, Shasta, and Hood and I didn’t take it off. Kept me warm in our bivy at 11,000’ and layers great under other jackets. The hood is also amazing and I wore it over and under a helmet.

It's an R1, tried and tested

      • Familiarity: I've used it several times
      • Fit: True to size
      • Size Bought: large
      • Height: 6'2"
      • Weight: 240lbs

I don't like the pullover style for this jacket. I found that when zipped down the jacket would fold down in a weird way making it look saggy and droopy. But it's an R1 so it is pretty amazing. Very versatile and comfortable!

      Best midlayer around

      • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
      • Fit: True to size

This thing is an absolute workhorse. I keep using this thing and keep being surprised at how much I like it. I might go back for the version without the hood as unzipped the balaclava mouth cover area bounces around a bit, but not a huge problem.

a piece you need for every occasion

The R1 is that classic piece that you will take whether you are hiking in the spring, or need a layer while skiing. It can be a functional option for any day during any season. I ordered an XL in black and it looks and feels great. Durable, long cut which I like, and great arm length with the thumb holes lining up just right. My only thing is I hate tops that have a bunchy elastic at the waist, and this has a slight one. Not quite as aggressive as the synchilla by any means, but I prefer a loose top with an bungee adjuster instead.
If you have a wide neck you might feel some pinching in your lower throat when you utilize the hood but that is normal, its supposed to fit snugger than a regular collar.

      Ladies, Size down!

      • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it
      • Size Bought: Small
      • Height: 5'6"
      • Weight: 120lbs

I often size in men's and was psyched on the bright textile green color, but I was bummed when I realized that the Men's small was rather large for my stubby lady arms. My thumbs didn't reach the holes and the 1/4th zipper went nearly to my waist. I don't see this as a sizing issue, but for any smaller women looking to order the men's version for this technical fleece, I would suggest sizing down. Otherwise, the material is soft and I look forward to trying the women's size for climbing and trail running on the cold mornings!

Ideal performance midlayer in the cold

      • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
      • Fit: True to size
      • Size Bought: Medium
      • Height: 5'9"
      • Weight: 155lbs

Ever since seeing a friend wearing one of these while wading and swinging flies on the Hoh River on a chilly November morning, I wanted one. I've now had mine for a few years, and it's a close second behind my Houdini for my most-often used layer. I use it primarily for ski touring, resort skiing and cool/cold weather fly fishing.

      What I like about it:

      - The hood is snug and easily fits under a helmet, warmer hat, etc.

      - It zips up and can even cover my mouth for truly cold/miserable conditions, meaning I don't need to bring along a balaclava for cold/windy conditions. I just zip it all the way up and I'm cozy.

      - It has a long enough cut that I can easily tuck it under my pants if I want to really seal the heat in, and it won't easily ride up my back.

      - Nicely reinforced thumb holes mean I can put gloves over the sleeves and they will not ride up my arms

      - The 3/4 length zip allows me to easily dump heat if I need to (often a must on a bluebird dawn patrol in the Wasatch where I might go from a frigid, dark trailhead to an east-facing sunny slope in the space of a couple hours)

      - Last but not least it breathes REALLY well despite being surprisingly warm. This means I can wear it as my outer layer while skinning in very cold temps and I'm perfectly comfortable. The breathability does cut both ways when it gets windy, but that's what a wind shirt is for.

Overall this might be my favorite layer, although it's a close competition with my old Houdini wind jacket. I can't really think of any obvious ways to improve it; it's pretty close to ideal.

      R1 warmth

      • Fit: True to size
      • Size Bought: Large
      • Height: 5'9"
      • Weight: 160lbs

Great design with a long front zip for heat dumpage, and great thumbderware design. The R1 is a really warm layer, great to put in the touring pack.

Excited to try a better fit!

      • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
      • Size Bought: Small
      • Height: 5'6"
      • Weight: 120lbs

I wanted to see what the fuss was about and loved the bright yellow in the men's. I usually prefer men's sizing anyways but was kind of bummed when my thumbs didn't even reach the thumb holes. I don't hold this against the product as it's not sized to fit me particularly, but for any ladies who often size themselves in men's beware that this is significantly longer and a bit wider than I've found in other products. I wasn't able to use it for technical use and I'll be returning it for a women's size that'll fit a bit more snug.

      Perfect Midlayer

      • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
      • Fit: True to size
      • Size Bought: Medium
      • Height: 6'3"
      • Weight: 185lbs

It's hard to argue with the R1's fit, breathability, and versatility. I occasionally wish I had the hoodless option when layering under a hooded shell, but that's a small complaint and the extra insulation isn't a bad thing on the coldest days. Fit is true to my experience with other Patagonia items: I'm 6'3" with 36in sleeve measurement (neck to wrist), and the sleeves are just a tad too short for me to use the thumbholes and cover my hands. No major issue with gaps, though, which is rare for someone with arms as long as mine.

      New Go-To Midlayer

      • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
      • Fit: True to size
      • Size Bought: Large
      • Height: 5'8"
      • Weight: 160lbs

Picked this up earlier in the winter mostly as a touring mid-layer. After my first long day tour, I was hooked and have worn it nearly every day - in or out of bounds - this season.

The grid fleece breathes exceptionally well, I tend to overheat quickly and most of my time on the skintrack is spent in just a light baselayer - maybe my light shell on top if it is windy or nuking snow. After a 5-mile skin in temps starting in the low-10s up to the mid-20s during the approach, wearing just a base layer and the R1, I didn't feel the need to pack the R1 once. The large half-zip lets you dump heat very efficiently if need be, but for the majority of the day I had it fully zipped and the R1 naturally regulated temps very well. For resort days I have worn this just under a shell down to the low teens and had the same experience. Warm on the chairlift up and holds heat in for the ride down, but after short hikes/sidesteps and nonstop laps I never felt like I was starting to overheat or needed to even unzip the R1.
The high collar and ninja style hood are favorite features of mine as well. The hood is low profile enough to be worn under a helmet comfortably, and when fully zipped the collar covers my whole neck and chin to keep wind and snow out on pow days.

Great design, super comfortable, and great breathability make the R1 a winner!

      Toasty

      • Familiarity: I've used it several times
      • Fit: True to size
      • Size Bought: Large
      • Height: 5'10"
      • Weight: 175lbs

This thing is great. I must say, that it is warmer than I expected it to be, but it’s nice how far you can unzip it.

      New favorite layer

I run hot so skinning in this layer has been been perfect, I can pull the hood up for wind or sun protection as needed. The 7/8th zip lets me look 70's retro cool with a gold chain and it dumps an insane amount of heat when needed. Highly recommend.

        A great all around midlayer

        • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
        • Fit: True to size
        • Size Bought: L
        • Height: 6'0"
        • Weight: 190lbs

I love this pullover. It is warm enough for colder days with the hood but cool enough when it gets hot.

        Incredibly Versatile

        • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
        • Fit: True to size
        • Size Bought: Small
        • Height: 5'3"
        • Weight: 150lbs

I have been loving this R1 since I got it and have barely taken it off. It can be a nice low profile midlayer overtop of a t-shirt or long sleeve baselayer, or you can wear it next to skin as a heavy baselayer, which is very comfortable as well. Every feature is really well thought out. The extra long zip, balaclava hood, and long sleeves with thumbholes make it very adaptable to whatever situation you are in.

        Perfect midlayer

The scuba hood, half zip, and thumb holes on the sleeve make this the perfect mid layer... oh yeah, it is pretty dang warm too. Runs a little long so it will be sure to go under a climbing harness and not bunch up and it is a little slimmer fit over all, which also makes it perfect to put under your ski/snowboard shell, without looking like Randy from A Christmas Story. With the amazing patagonia build quality, I know this is going to last me a long time. what are you waiting for?!?

          Needed a Mid Layer

What else can I say about the Patagonia R1 hoody that hasn't already been said? I was in need of a midlayer to get rid of some more buly layers I have been using and this surpassed my expectations for warmth and weight. The waffle fleece lined interior is warm and soft and combined with a moisture wicking baselayer, kept me totally dry from the beginning to the end of my day. The thumb loops are a nice feature because my jacket doesn't have the wrist gaiters with loops, these do a great job of keeping the snow out of my gloves when I take a digger. I am 5'11 and pretty lanky (usually right between a M and L) so I bought the Large after reading this was a slimmer fit. The fit is perfect but sleeves and waist are a little long. I would have found the Medium to be too snug for my taste so I can live with the sleeve/waist length. This piece allows me to forgo the facemask on cold days by zipping all the way up and wearing the hood with a beanie over top. Looking forward to using the R1 while fishing as well! Solid piece, nice colors and I don't mind the fit at all.

          Best MidLayer Out There

Welcome to comfort town, this thing is a cozy treat for the wayfaring snow person. I don't understand it, but it somehow also sheds heat effectively when you're working hard (or hardly working, am I right??). The hood is the best part as it fits snug against your head making it a great layer to pair with any sport with a helmet. The additional thumb loops at the end also keep it from bunching when skiing with gloves. This is probably my favorite item Patagonia makes.

          Il never take it off

From the moment I picked it up and put it on, I haven been able to take it off.! I wear it to bed, I wear it to school and work, i wear it climbing, i wear it skiing, its the ultimate midlayer!
Its super warm for the weight thanks to the square grid , and i love the slim fit. It really fills in the gaps of the active wardrobe, and Il never take it off!

          Excellent mid layer

Love the thumb holes, and fit of this hoody. Great mid layer without a lot of bulk.
