I had my doubts about buying this coat, because I thought it was going to have a rubbery feel on the fabric for been a rainproof jacket, but I was wrong, the material feels like cotton, and the cut is European (semi-fitted and in a subtle v-shape from the waist down), similar to a formal Emporio Armani and a Robert Cavalli long coats (that I own), which cost a lot more, which adds to the overall value of this coat at a bargain price. Many complain about the hood but for me, it fits right, not too tight and not too loose, perfectly designed to keep the chilling winds and cold out, the way it should for a winter jacket that can withstand -30 or even -20 degrees, keeping you toasty warm. I bought the black color so I can wear it with any color scheme, dress it down with a collar shirt with a tie for the office, or down with a sporty fleece or polyester underlayer for an evening date with my girl, which makes the coat versatile, sophisticated, and stylish in semi-formal and casual settings. In sum, this is one beautiful winter coat!

As the previous reviewer mentioned, the hood fits very awkwardly making it a little uncomfortable for an extended period of time. With that said - in my case, I primarily use this as my commuter coat so I have it on for about 4 hours of my day. I always wear a hat so I do not use the hood for an extended period of time - sometimes never. Which is why the hood doesn't particularly bother me but during the times that I used it, it did get uncomfortable. This coat is waterproof and windproof. It's a little stiff to begin with but breaks quickly. This coat has kept me warm during the brisk Chicago winters ranging from -10 to 40 degrees. I usually wear a fleece vest underneath. It's a quality product that's designed beautifully without the big pockets in front. Minimalist, sleek design that can match any outfit for any occasion. If you can get it on sale (which I did) and if you aren't the type to use a hood as much for an extended period of time, I would highly recommend it.

Beautiful jacket w/ tiny collar and hood

First off, I want to say that this is a beautiful and warm jacket. I've worn it in 20F weather and it kept my body nice and toasty. I'm 5'9, 150lbs, and I chose size small. The fit around my waist, chest and arms are great, however, the compliments stop there as I wish to express my extreme displeasure with the jacket's collar and hood. The collar is extremely tight so I almost never zip it up all the way. The hood is an even bigger disappointment as it's extremely small for anyone who has an average size neck and head. Whenever I use the hood, I have to crouch my neck and gets very uncomfortable, giving me neck cramps. I have no idea why Patagonia makes cuts like this. Because of this hood issue (and it's a very big issue), I do not recommend this product.
