Gobbles Gear Up.

Half bottomless pit, half formidable foe, the Patagonia Lightweight Black Hole 45L Duffel Bag has a reputation that precedes itself. And while it shares the same name as its elder sibling (the Black Hole), the Lightweight Black Hole differentiates itself with a lighter material and packable constitution, making it ideal for life spent in small spaces: tiny homes, vans, or yurts.

More specifically, this mid-sized duffel features an abrasion-resistant nylon exterior that's equal parts durable and lightweight, while the TPU laminate and DWR treatment defend your gear from coffee spills, precipitation, and camp cooking sessions gone awry. The diagonal zipper touts a wide girth to ensure easy access to the cavernous main compartment. An internal stash pocket provides safe respite for smaller items and doubles as the storage sack for the duffel when it's not in use.

Perfect Weekend Duffel

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

This 30L pack feels more like 40L because it is just one huge compartment. It is ideal for packing clothes for 2-4 days along with a pair of shoes and a laptop in a sleeve tossed on top. It would also make a good gym bag. The only pocket is accessible from the outside and inside.

Great size, light

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

This is a great size bag for quick weekend trips. The material is hardy, though it is lighter and different than some of the larger (60L?) black hole duffel bags. That's my only con with these, but on the flip side, it does make the bag way lighter!

High hopes

  • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it

I really wanted to like this bag, bought it to replace an aging quilted cloth duffel of similar dimensions. I figured the benefits of water resistance (bottom panel IS actually the same water 'proof' material, just inside out so the film doesn't abrade so that is a plus), lightness and packability would outweigh the compromise straps and crinkly nature of the material. I was wrong. Even tried adding a separate shoulder strap to the daisy chains, and that was just awkward. It's not as small when packed into itself as I expected, either. And the straps, wooo does that need a design update, the length needs to be doubled. Honestly, it's a well constructed bag, as expected from Patagonia, very solid, just with some design flaws. I'll bet v2 or v3 will be the ticket.

Great Gift

  • Familiarity: I gave it as a gift but have feedback to share

Bought this for some good friends of mine for an every day kind of bag. Anytime we would go anywhere with them they had multiple small bags so I thought I would buy them something to make it a tad bit easier. Not a huge fan of the light weight material but it does not impact the use of it in any way. Good bag and for the size of it stores quite a bit.

My new favorite thing

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

Most previous reviews of this bag are accurate. The straps could be better, the material is extremely thin. It's called "lightweight" for a reason! The thinness of the material is exactly what I expected by the bag's description and I don't find it to be inflexible. I was so happy with the bag I called my friends to praise it! I'm moving overseas and this is the perfect carry on! It is so lightweight allowing me to fit the maximum number of items and its a beautiful color (Balkan blue). I agree some weight could be sacrificed to improve the strap situation and for the price, the waterproofing could be improved? Personally, that wasn't important to me. If I could carry on more bags, I'd buy this in bulk. I recommend this if it fits your needs.

LOVE this bag!

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I use this bag in the rad orange and purple for my climbing gear and clothes. It's the perfect size to hold everything while still being small enough to be tucked into the cubbies at the climbing gym. The lightweight fabric is still super durable. I just wish it had more pockets, but overall great with lots of storage. Easily collapsable, too!

Can I give zero stars?

This bag isn’t good. The material is a very, very stiff plastic. It doesn’t allow for a lot of flexibility. The straps are adjustable, but they don’t get quite long enough to carry both straps on one shoulder, so it must be held by hand or worn as a backpack. I guess the one positive thing I can say is that the colors are nice. I will be returning this bag.

Not what I was looking for.

  • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it

I found this bag to be too thin and flimsy. There was not enough structure to make the bag a practical duffle. The underside of the bag is also not waterproof like the rest of the bag. Ultimately this bag was not what I wanted. Instead, I upgraded and went to the 90L black hole and am so glad I did. If you're looking for a quality duffle for a weekend away, I'd consider checking out Patagonia's black hole. It's more expensive but worth it.

Backpack straps are bad!

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

Ok so i use this primarily for my sailing gear. For that application its great I can fit my farmer john wet-suit some small neoprene booties my life jacket ( I have an NRS Ninja in a L/XL) and a spray top. The little pocket is great for shoving my gloves, beanie, and watch into so that I don't lose them. The best part of this pack is that the fabric itself is very water proof. After im done sailing i can shove my wet gear into the pack and not worry about it getting my car wet. It should be noted that this pack is not waterproof in any real sense. My main problem with the pack is that the backpack straps are terrible. I have quite broad shoulders and these straps will not stay put. I have to constantly hold them so keep my bag on. I think that a sternum strap could easily fix this in future models but until then id steer towards the classic black hole bags because they have more adequate shoulder straps.

Perfect Gym Bag

  • Familiarity: I gave it as a gift but have feedback to share

This bag is very light weight and durable. It is a perfect gym bag as it is simple and semi-small but allows you to fit what you need.
Bought this for a friend who did not have any real bags to use for a quick weekend getaway or for a gym trip. He now uses this every day and loves the material it is made out of.

Best carry-on/weekend bag ever

This bag is not only very light and durable, it has a GlDWR finish which keeps it dry with hauling in and out of the house or around the campsite. I would have liked to have seen at least one interior pocket or exterior pocket for small things like a passport or other miscellaneous items

    Go-To Duffel

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I have heard tales of how great these black hole duffels are, and was finally able to get my hands on one. Light, durable material, and packs up small when not in use. I have used it car camping, road tripping, and on a ski hut trip where it kept my gear dry in a blizzard. Very nice. I envision this bag being used for many years to come.

    For the grab and GO!

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

Classic Black Hole construction and minimal design. Is great as a gym bag, or a small bag for travelling when you don't need the frills of pockets or spacers. Because of the TPU it's super sleek and is nice for throwing in everything from fly fishing waders to dress shirts.

It's super easy to clean when you leave your gym clothes in there too long (guilty)

The bag weighs nothing and packs down very small - I actually packed it in my checked baggage on my trip to Iceland and used it on the way home to pack all the goodies I bought for the squad.

    Patagonia refined!
