Houdini Air Jacket

When you know you can't do without light weather protection but don't want to get stuck with that clammy feeling that can often accompany active pursuits while wearing a shell jacket, throw on the Patagonia Houdini Air Jacket for an ideal balance between breathable comfort and wind-and-water resistant protection. Finding itself in between Patagonia's soft and breathable Airshed jacket and the more robust Houdini jacket, this lightweight shell provides the best of both worlds with weather-resistant protection and a comfortable internal climate.

The nylon double weave fabric blocks the wind on blustery summits, while the textured backing construction promotes greater airflow than that of a standard shell design. It's also got a DWR (Durable Water Repellent) coating that resists drizzling rain and other light precipitation, helping to keep you dry while you push for cover in case the weather turns even more. When that proves to be a false alarm and the wind dies down, you can stuff it down small into its own chest pocket, stow it in a pack or on a harness, and continue along your way.

This thing fills the gap between a pure wind shell and lightweight softshell with ease. It has an athletic fit, and plenty of length in the arms for extended movements, such as in road biking, scrambling, or trail running. It offers a nice upgrade in weather resistance / light rain from the original Houdini, with some obvious cost in breathability, but the reduction is not significant. The material against the skin is more comfortable than the Houdini. You?ll probably see slightly more sweat in the arms and back than elsewhere, at least when riding. However, I?ve found this to be the case with any similar product. It does not pack into its pocket with the same ease as the Houdini. I could stuff that with a blindfold on and half-frozen fingertips. It just takes a bit more patience and precision. Easy after 4-5 attempts. With a 45? chest and 36? waist, the large fit with enough room to add a baselayer or an R1 techface without snags. No more than that, however. The hem adjustment is excellent, and the extra back-length again makes it favorable for cycling. Keeps tire-projected road rubbish off your back. It?s a high-quality piece that is worth the extra $ over the pure Houdini for weather resistance. It?s a masterful antidote for light rain. Under clear skies on a breezy day, the original Houdini is still the clear go-to. It is the undefeated featherweight champion.
