Why We Like The Grade VII Down Parka

If the Patagonia Grade VII Down Parka looks like the puffiest jacket we've ever seen, that's because it just might be. But put it on and you'll see that all that puff, specifically 800-fill down with a fully baffled construction, leads to some pretty extraordinary warmth. Designed through years of trials and testing, the Grade VII represents Patagonia's warmest belaying parka, or any jacket for that matter, to date. It was designed for the most adventurous expeditions to earth's most extreme climates, and all that testing and its endless list of features say that it's up for the task.

Extremely warm for tehcical or urban

I've used it several times

So this is Patagonia's flagship technical jacket featuring 800 down filled baffled design creates one of the warmest jackets I have ever tried. I have a Canada Goose Langford (Small Fusion) and an Arcteryx Camosun (XS) and this hands down is the warmest jacket in my arsenal, granted all jackets are designed for drastically different uses. The Langford is the second warmest with a 650 fill and the Camosun in third even with a 750 fill. However, the Camosun hands down has the best water resistance since it uses Gore-Tex and then the Grade VII with it's DWR treatment and probably in a distant third the Langford. While I use the Grade VII as as an urban jacket it clearly was designed as a technical jacket with two way zippers, meshed infused internal pockets for drainage, overall light weight, oversized hood for helmets, and how the jacket is cut with an extended tail. While the Canada Goose started as a technical expedition brand, the Langford is clearly is an urban fashion statement. The Camosun is marketed as an urban parka and while I never would use it for anything technical, its Gore-Tex allows you to use it in a lot more conditions than any Canada Goose which IMO has pretty bad water resistance. The Grade VII was purposely made to be oversized and almost mimic a sleeping bag. No matter what size you get, the jacket is going to look puffy or big on you, however I would suggest possibly sizing down. I am 5'5" 135lbs and in Patagonia I take a size small but a lot of the stuff I have bought from them was slim cut or not purposely oversized. I got to try a size small at an outlet and instantly knew the jacket was too big for me. Maybe if I wanted to layer an ultra thick base and top layer, sure a small could work but that would beat the purpose of getting such a warm technical jacket where it allows you to wear less and move more freely. Their is no women's version and Patagonia kind of markets this as a unisex jacket even though it is tagged as men's. There are only two colors available in blue and black. The recycled ripstop fabric is pretty thin and while I haven't had any durability issues yet, I am curious how this piece holds up especially if you used it as a technical piece. Overall a super warm and very technical jacket that can also make for a great alternative to other fashion/urban jacket in Canada Goose or Arcteryx

Amazing parka

I am not a climber but do spend lots of time outdoors. Patagonia mens size M jackets fit me well. This parka is very warm, light weight and comfortable. Sleeves and collar do not restrict movement at all. Hood is big but works well without a helmet even in high winds. The front zips up to protect your face from freezing wind but you can unzip it a few inches to breathe easily. Zippers and pockets work great. You can sleep in it comfortably too. I have worn it at night in wind chills of -30 F. This is a serious piece of gear for serious cold. Thanks
