Down Sweater Jacket

Consider the Patagonia Women's Down Sweater Jacket as a Jane of All Trades, if you will. This jacket touts a versatile construction that makes it ideal for early-season ice climbing, mid-winter skiing, or casually wearing in cool winter temperatures. As its name suggests, the Down Sweater is equipped with lightweight and compressible 800-fill Traceable Down, meaning the geese whose feathers insulate this jacket are never force-fed or live-plucked. Additionally, the down insulation is certified by NSF, an independent third party.

Down insulation is fine and dandy, but it's virtually useless without a little extra protection—which is why the designers at Patagonia outfitted the jacket with a durable recycled ripstop exterior that safeguards your core warmth, without compromising the jacket's lightweight constitution. And to bolster your defense, a DWR treatment easily sheds light moisture, so you stay warm and comfortable no matter what Mother Nature throws your way. Horizontal baffles are sewn through to prevent the down from shuffling around, meaning you stay warmer, longer, while the updated, contoured fit and slightly longer hem length double down on your protection. Additionally, zippered hand pockets keep small necessities close by and secure, and an internal chest pocket easily converts into a stuff sack for the jacket.

  • A versatile, warm jacket for climbing or casual wear
  • Recycled ripstop exterior is tough, breathable, and lightweight
  • DWR treatment sheds light moisture
  • 800-fill Traceable Down assures lofted warmth
  • Hand pockets keep small necessities close by
  • Internal pocket doubles as a stuff sack for jacket
  • Adjustable hem provides a personalized, sealed-in fit
  • Contoured fit and slightly longer hem double down on warmth

Lightweight & cozy

I am 5ft, 125lbs and purchased a small. I can comfortably wear a base layer (or two) or a thin sweater underneath. Bought this jacket for fall/winter backpacking but I have found myself using it whenever I can. It is lightweight and stuffs easily into my pack.... and it looks good on! I have had the occasional feather come out, but typically after I really stuff it in my pack. I have worn this jacket on trips from 60-30F. I personally needed to wear a couple layers underneath in 30F weather. I prefer the non-hooded version, but did find myself wishing it had hood when it was really cold. Overall, happy with this purchase. It is my first down jacket though so I cannot compare it to other purchases.

The 800 down makes this jacket the perfect staple in your kit when the days get cold. Pair with a shell for maximum protection. This jacket has been everywhere with me and is holding up just fine - it's so durable! I love how long the sleeves are.

I keep this handy all year long. I wear it skiing all winter under my hardshell and in the spring and fall while outside. Some summer evening warrant a little extra, and I get my "go-to." My husband has one too. It packs up very small--into its on pocket! I've had this for many years--I got it the year they first came out with the down sweater. The zipper went last year and Patagonia replaced it, charging only $5. I love Patagonia's corporate policy on reusables and when I finally replace this one, I'll send it to them to recycle. Our daughter has one too.

I really like this jacket for general warmth and style. I wouldn't say I "put it through the wringer" though. I would define the usage more like, "I wear it a few times per week when I walk my dog to Starbucks and out to tailgate football games." There is absolutely zero camping, hiking, kayaking, etc. on my resume. I digress. This was my second Patagonia jacket and the second jacket that has zipper issues. One of the zippers on the outside pocket no longer works and the inside pocket zipper constantly gets caught in the material. I still wear it since unlike my other one which had the main zipper break, it technically works. $500 later, I'm not 100% sold on Patagonia.

Are you aware that Patagonia will fix or replace any damaged items?

Patagonia has the absolute best warranty in the business with their "Iron Clad Guarantee", and in fact pioneered the idea of repair or replacement for the lifetime of the gear. They will replace a 10 yr old jacket that has truly been put through the ringer at the replacement price, or they will refurbish the gear at their cost. Their customer service is unparalleled in the outdoor industry. Send them an email or give them a call, you will not be disappointed.

I bought the Patagonia down sweater at the end of the winter on a whim, and I love it so much. It is perfect for doing things around town on the warmer late winter days in Minnesota, and it has been awesome outside for those cold spring days. It is the perfect gap coat for temperatures when it is too warm for a winter coat but too cold for a light layer. I love how light it is, and it's super packable too. I can't say enough about how much I love it!

I have had friends raving about this jacket for years, but was unwilling to take the plunge and purchase one for myself. I delayed for no reason as this jacket is perfect. Light weight enough for the Spring and Fall temperatures, but heavy enough that one could use with layers for those cooler winter days. This jacket is well designed, well manufactured, and backed by the Patagonia guarantee. Unfortunately I fall between sizes (Small vs Medium) and ended up sizing up. It is a little roomy for me, but should work well over time with layer. In hindsight I should have stuck with the Small.

Sweater that’s also a jacket

I got this for my mom for Mother’s Day and she loves it. It is like a sweater in that you can wear it indoors to stay extra cozy, and she did! But it’s so much more than that. Perfect to throw on in any spring/fall conditions other than rain without having to worry about layering. It also makes a great winter coat if you have a layer underneath.

I love this jacket. Fantastic color. I'm 5'6" and 125lbs. I bought a Medium so that I could fit sweaters underneath for those really chilly days. I probably could have gone with a small, but the roominess of the medium is great. So pleased.

I love this jacket. Have not had it off since receiving. Warm! True to size: I am 5 foot, 6 inches, 120 lbs. I bought a medium thinking I might have sweater on also.. I would fit in a small I think but not with sweater underneath jacket. I also love the color. Already several compliments on color—pesto.

Can I wash this jacket or dry clean it? Recently, our AC shut off while we were away . Because of the humidity, everything has Mildew damage or at least had that smell.

for sure! The Down Sweater is machine washable, and it's actually good for the jacket to get a quick blast in the dryer on medium heat (a few tennis balls help re-loft the down as well)

I just got this Patagonia Nano Puff Sweater Jacket. I love the light weight, the feel and the color but the sleeves are way too long and the body is a little too long. Does it come in a petite?

for the patagonia down sweater, what is the difference between the sumac red and the turkish red? is one brighter than the other?

Adela, The Sumac Red is a more muted tone than the super-bright, more orange-y Turkish Red. Hope this helps-- feel free to give me a shout if you have any other questions! llabar@backcountry.com or 801-736-6399.

Is the Cochineal Red truly red or more orange-y? It's hard to tell from the photo.

Riva, I feel like Cochineal is a pretty solid red, maybe with a touch of orange too it but not too much.

Awesome, thank you!
