Down Sweater Jacket
Mustering up the will power to get out of your sleeping bag in the early hours of the morning when frost clings to your tent walls can be daunting. So before you wait for your camp mates to come shake you out of bed, know that the Patagonia Men's Down Sweater Jacket will keep you just about as cozy as your sleeping bag did thanks to its plush 800-fill down insulation and windproof exterior. Each down cluster can be traced back to geese that were never live plucked or force fed, and its incredibly warm and compressible so you can stash it away when the temperatures rise. The eco-friendly fabric is made entirely from recycled materials and is treated with a DWR finish to shed light precip whether you're exploring a new-to-you trail somewhere in the Tetons, climbing granite in the Enchantments, or ripping skins in the Wasatch backcountry.

Warm, light weight, packable, classic styling and clsssic fit (it fits a bit boxy around my midsection, so not a slim fit), typical Patagonia quality. It has a couple of holes that I've taped up in the past couple of years, but that's after nearly 7-8 years of using this almost every cold day of the year here in Philly.

Received as a gift, I like the semi-trim fit and packability. Can see using it for cold dog walks, cool evening at the campsite or the crag. The fit sort of limits what you can wear underneath it; basically only a base layer. Personally, I intend to get a Columbia Terminal Tackle Hoody or Patagonia Capilene Cool Hoody, perhaps one size down, to wear underneath and have some neck warmth. We live in North Florida, so my preferences might not reflect those of folks in colder climates.

Can't think of anything that's good about this down jacket other than the color selection and weight. It's super basic, down is okay not that warm, the zippers are cheap and janky and the outer material is thin and fragile. It's also a very bad choice if there is ANY moisture in the air. Not that I would use this for rain but it seemed to suck moisture out of the air and get "damp" looking spots, darker than the rest of the jacket. There was also fraying and extra string at the seems. Not a great selection of pockets. I would compare this to a $50 down jacket you can get at Costco with even less ability to withstand moisture. Another issue for me was the fit. It's short and boxy, I'm tall and slender, it was huge and wasteful around my midsection, hardly reached my belt line and was tight in the shoulders. Not to mention my wrists shot a good 3-4 inches past the end of the sleeves and were fully exposed (size Large) and I could not find a pair of gloves that closed this gap.

I can't be bothered to return this as it took me a long time to make my mind up to buy it. Size fits perfectly (small - I'm 180cm and slim), and looks good. However, I expected more from the insulation. 800-fill apparently refers to the quality of the fill, and makes no promises about how much of that high-quality fill is stuffed in there. As it turns out, the jacket doesn't feel very 'puffy' at all, and the amount of feathers is very disappointing. If you hold some areas with two fingers it feels like there's no feathers or practically no feathers in there.

I ordered 2 of these coats for my son and myself. I'm about 6 feet and 215 with an athletic build. I ordered an XL, and it fit well in the shoulders, arms, and chest, but was much too big in the torso. I tried my sons' large size and it was too small in those areas, but the torso did fit better. I'm not going to reduce the rating because it feels like a great product, and fits my son quite well. If you're someone that regularly goes to the gym, the cut on this one may be way too generous in the mid section. If you consider yourself a typical build or even carrying a few pounds in the midsection, this would be a great jacket.

After many years of picking up *budget* down packable items and other layers that are supposed to be warm, I finally pulled the trigger on this jacket. All of the 5-star reviews I read were certainly for good reason. PROS: - EXTREMELY versatile, can wear with just about any outfit in just about any condition. - Exceptionally warm, especially for something that packs down so small (tested in 40 degree temps with a base layer so far) - Length of the sleeves are perfect - many others make sleeves that are a bit too long, but this Patagonia down coat is PERFECTION CONS: - I have now developed an addiction to quality items made by Patagonia, and will be replacing all my discount gear :) All in all, an extremely versatile jacket that is surprisingly warm and looks sharp both on the mountain, or wearing around the office. HIGHLY recommend!

Great Jacket, although I had to return sizes (initially bought XL changed to L) because it fit a little large the customer service team was very friendly and easy to work with. I know some posts say to buy true to size but in my opinion this jacket should fit on the snugger side, due to the down material if it isn't fitted it looks too puffy.

I often buy men's clothing because with being 5'11" I find it hard to find clothing that's long enough for me but also slim and feminine. Sadly a men's small in this product fit me in the arms but was far too narrow and uncomfortable in the waist, so I hat to return it! :'(

I bought this jacket expecting the occasional outdoor use and it has become my do everything all the time jacket. I wear it in the office, I wear it half way up a cliff face, I wear it at the grocery store, and I wear it in my sleeping bag on the side of a mountain. This thing is so worth the money.

How does this jacket do in windy conditions when it's not layered?
Rob
MC
September 13, 2018
It'll block most wind but it's not entirely wind proof as it's not meant for acting like a wind proof shell jacket. Also it's not meant to be worn in cold temps without layering.

How does the sleeve length compare to the Arc'teryx Thorium? I have the latter in medium, and the sleeves are 1-2 inches shorter than I'd like. How is the overall fit compared to the Thorium? Boxier?

Ok this or the Arcteryx cerium jacket lt , I want the one that's gonna last and not tear
Dick Todd

May 13, 2016
Dick, I would go with this over the Cerium. The Cerium is geared towards the user looking for the lightest option while Patagonia keeps the down sweater a little heavier but, more robust. I've had mine for over 10 years.

Michael, This is machine washable! Go to the Patagonia Product Care Guide and scroll down to the Down Insulation section. It's quite simple and I do it all the time. http://www.patagonia.com/us/patagonia.go?assetid=2797 More questions? Just call or email me, directly.

Does either the Patagonia down jacket or the Patagonia nano air run big? I am 6'3 250, i ordered the mountain hardwear nitrous in XXL and it swallowed me, so now I would rather pay more and get one of these two jackets. I wear an xxl in true slim fitting designs but I can wear xl sometimes when they run big. Please help

December 15, 2015
Rob, Even though you're a Timbers fan, I'll do my best to help you. ;) I think an XL Down Sweater might actually be the ticket for you. The Nano Air runs slightly slimmer than the Down Sweater, so XXL might be an option there but I would try the Down Sweater first.

Valdimir S.
December 3, 2015
Not sure if to blame the UPS driver for the smell. My Daughters Coat Just arrived and it also has a heavily cigarette smells. It could be that that someone is a heavy smoker at Backcountry Warehouse...!!!???
Ty S.
December 27, 2015
hey if you are not familiar with down it has a smell to it. This is probably the smell you are getting. It does kind of smell cigarette smokish I guess. Depends on the persons view I guess. The shell of all this gear anymore is so thin that the down smell passes through it easily.

What would be a good size for someone who is 6' and 150lbs. I fit half of the small size characteristics abd half of the medium size characteristics. Is there room for an extra layer in your normal size?
Nick F.
Gregory Morris
November 30, 2015
Your body is a medium but your arms are probable a large or XL! (I have loooong arms at 6'1'') Look at the sizing chart. Do you know what sleeve length you are? The problem with being tall and thin is you will rarely find a good athletic fit, especially at your weight.

November 30, 2015
I'm 5'11, 170 lbs and the Large fits great with a little room. It doesn't look like it's too big, and allows me to swing my arms (on belay, etc). I tried the medium and it fits, but really no room to move and add layers underneath.
November 19, 2015
What size for someone who is 5'8" and 195 lbs and doesn't like the jackets too snug. Are the arms very long or is there elastic to hold them up?
JC N
November 26, 2015
I'm 190 pounds and 6' and large is perfect for me. Not too big and enough room for an extra layer underneath.

Does this still come with the lifetime warranty straight from Patagonia? If anyone was ever to happen do the jacket would i deal with back country or Patagonia? Thanks

Backcountry is very good with dealing with warranty. In any case, you can also deal directly with Patagonia

My son is 6ft 210- (athletic build-broad shoulders)-he is going to college in PA. We are from Fl.. Two questions: L or XL Is this a good jacket for PA?
Susan B.
Ty Nelson
March 17, 2015
This would be a great PA college jacket for him for sure. Depending how broad his shoulders are he might need an XL, but for 6' 210 I would usually recommend a large.
Susan B.
March 17, 2015
Thanks, just bought the XL--He was between the two sizes, but when we put a heavier shirt underneath, XL was the size. Thanks for your input!
February 20, 2015
I'm considering buying the men's jacket. I really like the black color. What size would you recommend? I'm 5'10", 150 lb, broad shoulders, no tummy. I like classic fit. Thank you!

I am 6'2", 180b and i wear a size Large that fits quite well. I would think a medium might fit you... But it's hard to say as i don't know exactly how broad you are. Did you try clicking on the size guide and measuring your chest? Patagonia usually does a pretty good job with their size guide and from the looks of it this product runs pretty true to size!
Alejandro V.
February 23, 2015
Brandon, thank you very much for your comment !! Possibly buy the Medium size and then tell them how fit
December 3, 2014
I am only about 5'9 but have a stocky build, and I weigh about 170. I want to use the down sweater as my winter jacket. Should I go with the medium or a large? (Considering I have to layer and what not)

Looks kinda puffy for a mid-layer...is this the case?
Ben M.
Jared Downs
October 29, 2014
Ben, This isn't that puffy. It's only a 13 oz jacket so it's pretty light. For comparison this is only slightly thicker than the Ghost Whisperer by Mountain Hardwear. The picture above (in my opinion) doesn't do a great job of representing the thickness of the jacket. It's a rather flat picture. Jared D. Expert Gearhead 800.409.4502 ext 4055 jdowns@backcountry.com

It is hard to say the actual temperature range for a given product because that answer varies so much based on the person's weight, metabolism, humidity, and other factors. I would say this jacket would keep most people warm pretty close to 0 degrees.
