I got these for my uncle who is doing a lot of traveling this summer and camping. He needed something warm and lightweight. The capilene is perfect! He has notbing but good things to say !

These are WARM, which is good/bad

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I have some North Face 'warm' crew neck top baselayers, and had found that they were a bit not so warm once the temps dripped below 25F range. I tried this option out as an alternative, went out on a 35F ski day, and I started to sweat after doing a few difficult diamond runs. What's really shocking is how thin they are to keep so much heat in; I was impressed. So, moral of the story is that these were seriously capable thermals for me, especially good for night skiing at Keystone CO where I was, but if you do more strenuous trails and the day is sunny or not too far below freezing, they could be too warm. I'm still trying to find something that is warmer than the North Face 'warm' crew, and cooler than these, for days when it's in the high 20's to low 30's and I don't want a ton of layers, but these will be my 100% go-to for cold days and night skiing.

    Best Ever!

I bought these for my boyfriend for Xmas and this is what he has to say: "Hands down the best base layer I’ve ever owned. Incredibly comfortable and warm while still maintaining excellent breath ability. I’ve worn this shirt on warmer days and brutally cold days and it’s excelled in both scenarios. The thumb holes do an excellent job of keeping your sleeves dow when you put on another layer but are small enough that they don’t get in the way. Need about 5 more of these."

Need more than one of these

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times

    • Size Bought: Medium

I was looking for a winter base layer that was a bit warmer than the regular capilene top. Hands down one of my favourites, I wear it all the time.
I am 6'1 180lbs and a medium seems to fit pretty well.
Super comfortable and warm, don't be fooled by how thin it is.

    Best Baselayer

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I absolutely love this baselayer! When I first got this I thought it felt a little thin however, after wearing it a few times I realized it is pretty warm. This really seems to hold the heat it. I also like how well it wicks away moisture. This is perfect for layering up!

I will be buying more of these for sure!

Great but short in the sleeves

    • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
    • Fit: Runs small
    • Size Bought: Large
    • Height: 6'5"
    • Weight: 170lbs

I just recently bought this shirt and love how warm and comfortable it is, but it is also definitely short in the sleeves. I almost wonder if its a mislabeled medium, it is so short, too bad I already took the tags off.

Now dad won't ever leave the house.

My dad is a bit of a baselayer connoisseur, and the Capilene Thermal Weights passed his test with flying colors. He's a tall dude at around 6'5" and 185lbs, and the XL was a great fit for him--long enough in the legs and sleeves without being too baggy. Unfortunately, his wife and I also got him the one-piece suit for lounging around, and we're entirely convinced he won't ever leave the house again. Yep, they're that cozy.

    Warm, Comfy, the BEST!

Gave my dad this top as well as the matching bottoms as a gift. He has owned countless pairs of mid-weight and heavy-weight long johns throughout the years and could never really find the right pair. When he received these Capilene Thermal Weight set he was a little hesitant because they look thinner and light. BUT! He loves them. He has declared he will throw all of the others away and get another pair of these ones. Definitely a winning product by Patagonia.

Is the Patagonia Capilene Thermal Weight Crew warm enough to be worn by itself on Cold, wintry nights (go to sleep with it only)? Or is it meant to be worn literally as a base layer under fleece/flannel for warmth?
New England winters Are harsh and bitterly cold with shivering winds even in the 40s at night so it can get VERY cold when it drops ~32F freezing.
    Thanks!

Hey Michael, Thanks for the great question! It depends on where you're planning to use this top -- if you're looking for a warm shirt to wear indoors it is a great option but I don't think it would stand well alone while outdoors in the winter. If you're going outside you'd want to layer over it. This top is definitely designed to be worn as a baselayer so personally, I would lean more toward a fabric that is less "techy" looking to wear alone. Something by Smartwool in a 250 weight would be right up your ally - link here https://www.backcountry.com/smartwool-midweight-pattern-crew-mens?skid=SWL00TI-DEENAVWH-S&ti=UExQIENhdDpNZW4ncyBCYXNlbGF5ZXIgVG9wczoxOjExOmJjLW1lbnMtYmFzZWxheWVyLXRvcHM
