Extremely poor quality
These pants are poorly made. They ripped after one use and the Backcountry team refused to replace these. I’m a little surprised by the lack of customer service from Backcountry and the poor quality from a reputable name like Patagonia.

I have worn these in many different conditions and absolutely love the baselayers. The not only keep me warm, but dry as well when i'm touring and start to sweat a little.

Warm and soft
I bought these base layers mainly for cold days at the ski resort. They have performed great and I am very pleased with how they have turned out. The material is slightly irritating on my skin, but not a huge enough deal to not wear them. Just a little thick. All in all great base layer that does the job.

A Used Baselayer???
Very frustrating experience with Backcountry. They charged me the full new price for a "Worn Wear" base layer with holes in the seams. First, I am all for gear recycling. I think it's a great idea to reduce waste. But, I don't think a base layer should be recycled. Anything that has a trap door for quick access to your junk to take a leak in the wild should only be sold as new. More importantly, I think it's wrong for Backcountry to charge new pricing on "worn wear." I don't believe that was Patagonia's intent when they started the Worn Wear program. Picture attached. I could only attach 1 photo, so included the one with the holes vs. of the "Worn Wear" tag.

Does it just say “worn wear” on the materials tag? If it doesn’t actually have a Worn Wear stamp then it definitely wasn’t from worn wear. I think Worn Wear is something Patagonia puts on tags to indicate that the item is from a past season (or was purchased as a second at an outlet). I could be wrong though.

Turn up the heat!
If you are looking for a warm base layer, these are great! I feel that these breathe pretty well with the design, but still provide the warmth that you need. I wear a 32 pant, and the mediums fit fine, but are slightly baggy in the crotch. This isnât a huge takeaway though, as I would probably stick with the mediums no matter what.

VERY Warm Baselayer
Great for any and all outdoor activity in cold weather. If I'm looking at temperatures below 20 degrees I put these on first and never get cold. Great for walking, snowshoeing, skiing, ice skating, you name it. Also great to sleep in on cold nights.

Bought these for my dad who is currently living through the gnarliest, snowiest and coldest winter ever in Bend OR and he is obsessed with this baselayer. He wears it all the time and LOVES how thin the base layer is but how it really packs the heat. ( I have womens version of these and I totally agree!) He is 6'2'' and about 210lbs and the large fits him well as a nice form fit.

Fairly warm, but would not goes as far as to describe them as "furnace-like warmth". Writing the review mainly due to my disappointment with the waistband. For as expensive as these are, I'd expect a waistband that didn't bunch. After wearing these with the waistband bunched, it seems the waistband is now permanently deformed. I had the same issue with a pair of Patagonia underwear. It's crazy to me that cheap underwear can get a waistband right, but Patagonia can't. Complaining about a waistband might seem "nit picky", but once the waistband gets deformed, these bottoms are uncomfortable to wear. I've previously purchased the top counterpart to these bottoms and would highly recommend the tops.

Perfect layer for under PowSlayer bibs
These are the only layer I wear under my PowSlayer bibs, they are plenty warm on cold dawn patrols and not too hot when it warms up.

Lightweight Warmth for Cold Days
One of the best baselayers I have ever owned. Not only is the inside comfy but it is so warm. When I first put this on, I immediately noticed it trapping heat and warming me up, but it also breathes enough that I can leave it on and not suffocate in a sauna. I can wear these under my un-insulated ski pants and stay warm without trouble. I typically wear mediums and this was no exception. It fit great. It has a slim snug fit but with out being to form-fitting or revealing. These keep me warm without being too bulky and on frosty days, I can wear them under a pair of pants to stay warm and comfy. My new go-to baselayer.

Now Dad Won't Ever Leave The House.
My dad is a bit of a baselayer connoisseur, and the Capilene Thermal Weights passed his test with flying colors. He's a tall dude at around 6'5" and 185lbs, and the XL was a great fit for him--long enough in the legs and sleeves without being too baggy. Unfortunately, his wife and I also got him the one-piece suit for lounging around, and we're entirely convinced he won't ever leave the house again. Yep, they're that cozy.

Good for Apres ski
Great everyday long underwear for skiing or snowboarding. These are the best long underwear that I have ever owned. They have a looser fit than traditional long underwear. The thermal weight Capilene has the perfect amount of insulation and breathability. The only time I would wear anything heavier than this would be a -20 degree day.

Mostly was looking for a base layer under my ski pants, so haven't used them yet, but looking forward to using them. They are very comfy and seem very warm, stoked for ski season to start!

These are light and extremely comfortable! Great for lounging or shredding the slopes.

Sizing is the bane
I wear XL bottoms. Football legs and etc. Bought an XL Arcteryx Phase SV, and could not fit into them. Too tight. These Pagatonia Thermal in XL, however, are somewhat uncomfortably loose. Should've got an L. The insulation of the bottoms is interlaced, one line of substantial fleece and one line of next-to-nothing-thin face fabric. It doesn't seem to have affected warmth in the most significant way though. Would just feel a little weird around the knees if you are sensitive to it. This particular weave, however, will leave lines of red marks on your skin after exertions, and sometimes they itch. Bottoms dry moderately fast, and provide mid-weight warmth instead of the heavy-weight warmth its name might imply. Craftsmanship is the highlight. Durable. Design has good attention to details.

Comfortable and Warm!
Gave these to my dad! This is his review: "I have several sets of medium and heavy weight synthetic fiber long johns. So i was a little skeptical when the Patagonia Capilene Thermal Weight set arrived. They seemed a little flimsy and light. WRONG! They are the warmest, most comfortable set I have ever owned! I'm ordering another set and throwing all the others away". I think it's safe to say he liked them.

Are these as thick as the R1 hoody grid material? I am concerned I might overheat if they are. I have the light and midweight Capilene leggings and love both so far but looking for something warmer for those really cold days with light to moderate activity. Thanks.
December 22, 2015
Jeff, This is basically a lighter version of the R1, i think you'll be psyched. It definitely has some good warmth when you have a layer on top of it, and then it breathes really well when it's on it's own.

To echo what Ty said, these are the warmest in the line and a replacement for the old expedition weight capilene. For reference these would be great for a cold day skiing the resort, too warm for me touring, and a great legging for winter running. Let me know if you have any other questions on this or other Patagonia items.
