    Defies physics.

Tell your astrophysicist and sci-fi friends that Patagonia found out what's in a black hole, or at least the Black Hole 60L Duffel Bag: your climbing, hiking, and traveling gear from your last five-day trip. Inspired by rugged-yet-light alpine packs, the Black Hole features a burly ripstop fabric filmed in a TPU laminate and coated with DWR for the ultimate in outdoors protection. The padded base protects your gear throughout the trip, and Patagonia padded the removable shoulder strap and removable backpack straps for comfort. Internal organizers and zippered mesh pockets organize all the small things, while the external side pocket stows the duffel for compact storage. Compression straps prevent your gear from bouncing around whether you're traveling via airplane or four-wheeler.

    Does It All

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

Gear transport, carry on, weekend bag. This pack does it all and is made to last, going to be purchasing a few more sizes now that the 60 has worked so well for me.

    WOW WOW

Great duffel bag. I already had the 90L and I love it! I use it mostly for ski trips because it fits all my clothing, and all my ski gear inside. The back pack straps are comfy and it's super easy to carry. I had to get the 60L so that I can use for shorter trips and not have such a bulky bag :)

Are you able to get your ski boots and a respectable amount of ski gear in your 60L? I'm trying to find something that will hold my boots, jacket, pants, ski essentials AND still work as a carry on.

    Should Have Bought It Sooner

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I've been needing to replace my old duffel bag for quite some time. After reading all the positive reviews, I bit the bullet and bought one. I've used it several times now and I wish I would have bought it sooner! I was shocked at how much I was able to fit in this bag. The backpack straps made it easy to carry around. The material seems very strong and should hold up for a long time. I can't speak for the DWR finish, but I feel like it should keep things dry.

You are free to move about the world...

A bomber duffel, no doubt. Durable outer, well-functioning zippers, strong and adjustable strapping, does have internal compression straps, and the 60L will fit (as long as it isn't 100% jammed) in a US airplane overhead compartment without issue. I put on my daypack, use one shoulder strap that is cross-linked and sling this across my chest, and I'm off to faraway lands without checking a darn thing.

The only downside I run into with this bag is when it isn't very full. The internal compression straps help with cramming more stuff in, but if you're packed light the bag of course flops around a bit. External compression straps could solve both problems- compressing both the bag when space is not in use and the contents, when filled to the brim, so you can jam the zipper shut.

    Love this bag

This is my fourth one of these bags. Its a travelers best friend. It is super spacious and the material is great for getting dirty. Rain just falls off of it. The material is also super packable so when you aren't using it then it is super easy to store away.

    A must for frequent travelers.

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times

This bag is the best duffel out there. Material is very durable, it's simple and easy to use with a almost perfect design. We love the removable backpack straps. They make this bag a must for any frequent traveler.

    Kind of surprised

When I opened this bag up I was surprised at how small it looked. No way would it hold my wet suit, my son's wetsuit, my dry top, two neoprene hoods, two pairs of neoprene mittens and booties and a pair of board shorts. I was wrong, with room to spare.

      I use this for everything!

      • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I use this for traveling, putting my wet suit in (even after surfing), putting my ski stuff in, etc. It is very durable, but it is still light weight and will fold down very small. Has lots of loops for strapping down as well. I would recommend this to anyone. It is a very versatile bag

      What More Can Be Said

116 x 5 star reviews? I think the reviewers below have already provided enough reason to love this bag. I purchased the smaller version first and used it as a gym back and weekend traveller. I quickly realized it was the perfect size for a gym bag, but I was always maxing out on space for long weekend trips. So I purchased this larger sized bag second. Perfect size for those long weekend trips, and the addition of the backpack straps to this size is soooo helpful when running through airports.

      Best Duffel Ever!

      • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

These Patagonia Black Hole Duffels are my favorite! I ordered the black color, and they're so shiny + sleek in person! You can fit everything under the sun in there, AND I love the backpack straps! Highly recommend for anyone!

Pack your gear in another dimension

      • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I LOVE THIS BAG! The 60 liter size is the perfect carry on size but still big enough to pack a weeks worth of clothing and gear. And even more if you're a light packer. I am constantly amazed at how much stuff I can fit in there, it's like having access to dimensional portal and never ending storage.
Even when fully loaded down, the backpack straps make it comfortable to carry all that weight wherever you're headed. The durable rip stop fabric with TPU coating keeps your gear dry and safe no matter where you leave your bag. I've taken this duffel from the airport to the mountains to the desert and back and it has performed well everywhere. With Patagonia's Ironclad Guarantee, I look forward to using this duffel for the rest of my life.

      Best. Travel. Bag. Ever.

If you're on the fence, BUY THIS BAG. It's the perfect size for a carry-on (though something about the yellow color makes airline attendants curious if it will fit in the size guide bin...sigh), it's comfortable to carry, it fits an obscene amount of stuff, and it's durable as hell. I've gotten another color as a backup bag, and plan to buy a third as a gift for my husband who is still rocking an old Thule duffle from forever ago. It's simply the best bag for traveling...something I do at least a few times a month.

Perfect Carry On Size. Airline friendly

      • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I was looking for a right size black hole for carry on. I was reading reviews and most of them were pointing out that 45L is the biggest size for carry on, but I needed something bigger. I decided to go for it anyway and I was worried 60L might not fit as many airlines have different size overhead compartments. It was fine even on Spirit and United as they have, I think, smallest and strictest requirements for carry on bags. I am attaching picture with the bag on the plane. Fits perfect in the compartment and I was able to fit more stuff in the black hole duffel than my carry on bag on wheels. This duffel is really a black hole. I had everything organized, besides clothes I had camera lenses, chargers, DJI UAV's and bunch of accessories with extra batteries, shoes and warm clothes and toiletries on top. The duffel could fit even more stuff, I was amazed.

I cannot comment on how waterproof it is, but I assume it is water-resistant only on the top, bottom is cushioned but it does not look water-resistant.

It is very comfortable to carry it with the straps on short distances. It is somewhat confusing which one is left and right, they sit equally on the shoulders. I was able to figure which way by the picture and with the trial and error. Do not expect it to be as comfortable as the backpack, but it is great carrying it as a backpack on your way to the hotel. Definitely not hiking with it.

Perfect Carry On Size. Airline friendly

This is great! Thank you for the image and review Aleksey! Standard airlines only permit for a 45 L bag to be used as a carry-on but I have been able to sneak my 60 L on some planes as well. If you are looking for this as carry on use some caution that you may get rejected but often times you can go through without even batting an eye.

      Absolutely In Love!

      • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

This is an excellent piece of gear to add to the quiver! Great for carrying odds and ends around town, great at carrying camping goods on the back of a motorcycle for 1000+ miles of dirt road, great for a nice grab bag to take on quick overnighters. This bag is great to bring along on any adventure and can take a beating!

      Favorite bag

It is THE perfect size! will hold enough for a long weekend and some running gear. Having the bigger size already I purchased this bag in red and I absolutely adore it, using it almost every day. Fabric holds great and super resistant to wear and tear. Another great product coming from a GREAT company!

        Unanswered Question

Has anyone taken this on Ryanair? I know the demensions are slightly bigger then the carry on limit, but if you pack light can you make it fit?

This DRW coating is not explained. Please elaborate.
Is this duffel waterproof? Can it be made waterproof? If so what to use for waterproofing?

Hi , has anyone taken this bag as carry on luggage in a plane? Do you know if it's too big? Many thanks!

        Unanswered Question

What are the interior colors and how dark/light is it for the interior of all the duffle colors available including classic red? I'm looking for interior colors that are light so it is easier to find things. I don't want to be lost in a "black hole"!

        Unanswered Question

Can a single shoulder strap be purchased separately? Or can the backpack strap be utilized as a shoulder strap?

Does this bag have the traditional single over the shoulder strap or just the backpack style straps?

        Best Answer

i had the same question and eventually figured out that the bottom end of the backpack strap (opposite the clipped end) slides diagonally through the plastic part attached to the bag. Hope that makes sense

        Is the 60L carry-on size?

        Agnes,

Most US carry-on restrictions are in the neighborhood of 22" x 14" x 9" -- the 60L Black Hole is ~25" x 13" x 10". I've used it as a carry-on five or six times, but not fully packed. If it were 100% full, packed to the gills, you might not get away with it, but for the most part, I'd say yes, it'll work fine as a carry-on.

Let me know if you have any other questions-- I'd be happy to help! I can be reached via email at llabar@backcountry.com or 801.736.6399.

I packed mine to the gills, and though it was about 2.5 inches over the total restriction for American Airlines, no one said a word to me about it, maybe because I had it on my back, and most backpacks are well within guidelines. So for me, this was awesome as a carry on, and I loved getting to use it as a "backpack". But beware that different airlines have different restrictions and also have an up-charge if you claim it as a checked bag AT the airport (rather than doing it online beforehand). But some airlines also let things slide. Worst case scenario, they may tell you it's too big at the gate--just take a couple things out of it and squeeze it down to make it fit in their little size-tester-thingamajigs (something you can't do with a boxy suitcase)--it can surely take the rough handling! :) Good luck!!!

Wondering why they went to 900d from the previous version that is 1200d and how that is heavier duty than the previous version.

Hello uraudi, what a good question. The previous model was made with 14.7-oz. 1,200-denier 100% polyester, whereas the new model is made with 15-oz. 900-denier 100% polyester ripstop. The fabric's weight does affect abrasion resistance, so the newer model is made with "ripstop" polyester, whereas the previous model--though coming in at 1200d--is not listed as ripstop (ripstop refers to the weaving of fibers into the fabric into a diamond or square shape that, when punctured or torn, are better able to stop the tear from growing). You can actually see the difference in the fabric, with the one the right being the new, 900d polyester ripstop (see the characteristic ripstop squares?) with the one on the left being the older model. So, the bottom line is the integrity might be even better in the new model, despite the difference in denier.

        I hope that helps!

What are the differences between this and the previous version other than a $10 difference. It also looks like the external attachment points are shifted a bit. Anything else?

great question. The Black Hole bags were fully redesigned for this season.

        Here are the updates:

        New more durable fabric.

Updated pack strap interface - more secure and easier to take on and off

        Internal compression straps

The entire bag self stuffs into the front pocket

(we should have a video available soon detailing all of the updates as well)
