Defies physics.
Tell your astrophysicist and sci-fi friends that Patagonia found out what's in a black hole, or at least the Black Hole 60L Duffel Bag: your climbing, hiking, and traveling gear from your last five-day trip. Inspired by rugged-yet-light alpine packs, the Black Hole features a burly ripstop fabric filmed in a TPU laminate and coated with DWR for the ultimate in outdoors protection. The padded base protects your gear throughout the trip, and Patagonia padded the removable shoulder strap and removable backpack straps for comfort. Internal organizers and zippered mesh pockets organize all the small things, while the external side pocket stows the duffel for compact storage. Compression straps prevent your gear from bouncing around whether you're traveling via airplane or four-wheeler.

Perfect Bag
- Familiarity: I've used it several times
The price was a little concerning to me at first but I couldn't be more happy. This bag blows away any other competitors bag of the same size and it is all about the material. Super strong and easy to clean. The backpack straps are a bonus that is the cherry on top. Perfect bag no doubt.
Durable bag for all your adventure needs
- Familiarity: I've used it several times
This bag is super durable. I've strapped it to the top of my car on trips where the trunk got too full and my stuff stayed dry and clean. It's also super easy to clean out if it gets dirt or sand in it.
Backpacking in Europe
- Familiarity: I gave it as a gift but have feedback to share
I gave this bag as a gift to a friend who is taking an extended backpacking trip around Europe. She said she loves the bag's utility, light weight, and look.
A bag that will work for almost any trip
This is my 3rd piece from the Black Hole series and I couldn't be happier with my new duffel addition. It's roomy, sturdy, and offers so much convenience is one bag.
Perfect carry-on
- Familiarity: I've used it several times
I love my black hole bag! This is my first time buying luggage from Patagonia and it’s my favorite over any suitcase I’ve owned. I Co-Op for school and move every semester, so I can pack it with 50Lbs and still fly with it as a carry-on or make it a weekender bag (since I’m an over-packer). The straps are incredibly comfortable and make the airport maneuvering so easy.
Large and durable
- Familiarity: I gave it as a gift but have feedback to share
This was a gift for a family member and it was a great pick. Its really big and can hold all the things you would need for a camping trip.
Honestly Everyone Should Have One
- Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
I use this bag every time I go anywhere longer than overnight. And even then sometimes. There's not a ton of organization, but it's super durable and I don't worry about a little bit of water. It's also a perfect size for a carry on and makes it easy to find your bag at baggage claim.
It's a must have
- Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
I go between this and the 90L between clothes and gear. the best!
LOVE this bag
- Familiarity: I gave it as a gift but have feedback to share
Great size for an overnight or multi day trip and easy to use as an airplane carry on as well. Love the attachable backpack straps. Bag is made of high quality, thick, weather proof fabric. Gave as a Christmas gift and was a great surprise!
Sheesh, this bag is GREAT
- Familiarity: I've used it several times
Roomy beyond what you would even expect. The material is nice and feels extremely sturdy. Works great as a gear bag for heading up to the mountains or as a travel bag for heading out of town! I love all the color options and I think the design is great.
Trips and camping
- Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
This is my first Patagonia duffle. I got it after my wife had the smaller one. I like this one because it seemed durable and it holds a lot. I also like the way it sits on the back with the backpack straps. This bag is great for anyone that wants to get their adventure on!
Blackhole 60l
I read a ton of reviews before buying the bag, def worth the money. Am on my way to Europe for the holidays(2 weeks) and I was really able to stuff all my stuff plus 2 bottles of wine but then had to check it in instead of carry on cuz of the booze. I was stuck in the middle between the 60 and 90 liter bags. Will definitely get way more use outta the 60 liter bag just cuz its a more practical size, The 90 liter is a solid choice for me to haul all my snowboard gear up to Tahoe! Patagonia is a solid gear brand, fjord flannel is my go to for everything. Thx backcountry for gettin ous gear heads our gear! Chris from Sacto
Perfect bag-perfect size
- Familiarity: I've used it several times
I have one of my own, but I bought my Fiance one. It is the perfect back for a 3 day weekend getaway, or a week in the mountains. You really can't go wrong with the 60L, it can fit everything you need for however long you are going for. The backpack straps are perfect if you have another bag or suitcase with you and easy for transport. I love that it has the handles too for easy walking. It is surprisingly roomy, this is the perfect size for all of your gear!
get this
GO TO travel bag. It's super durable, holds a ton, and the black shiny looks great. Buying in 90L next to fit more for bigger trips!!
LUV Dis Bag
- Familiarity: I've used it several times
I’m always a fan of a good duffel, and the Black Hole did not disappoint. I was able to cram a surprising amount of clothes in it, and the top still closed with ease. The internal compression straps help a lot with that, as well. Plenty of pocket storage. The backpack straps are also an awesome bonus!
Bomb proof
- Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
This bag is bomb proof. It is perfect for a 1-3 day trip if you want to avoid checking a bag with an airline. The color options are amazing and I love mine. Straps for backpack were included so it can double as a backpack. Not just a duffle bag. I foresee this lasting forever. I add this to my collection of Patagonia bags. Other brands have tried to mimic the Patagonia but none match.
Get it! You wonât regret it
I was on the fence about getting this bag. I was able to score this @ 20% off. Iâm glad I got it. I use it all the time and am astonished with all I can put in it. The bad has withstood abuse and looks like new. The backpack straps come in hand when transporting.
My favorite
- Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
Solid to load up with gear or clothes. This size works as a slightly oversized carry on if you're balling on a budget like myself. The backpack straps make it easy to carry around. Waterproof and durable
Awesome, durable, and spacious
- Familiarity: I've used it several times
I love this bag. I have the Black Hole 60L Duffel in White, which I purchased while it was on sale for $80. Normally I wouldn't buy something like this in white, but it was the only color available for the price and I absolutely LOVE it. It looks so good despite the obvious scuffing that happens with normal wear. It has held up super well and it's literally a black hole--everything fits! I've gone on weeklong trips and filled this up with all my gear no problem. It also fits as a carry on when not super loaded up, which is really convenient.
You won't hate this.
- Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
I have had this bag for a few years now and can't say enough about it. After struggling to figure out how to get the backpack straps on I haven't had any issues with it. You'll be asking your self why you didn't buy one sooner. Drag this bag across the airport, use it as a chair during those longer layovers, and use it as a pillow on those long delays. Bombproof zipper won't ever get stuck or break, which is the last thing you want to worry about with a travel bag. This bag also compresses down pretty small for storage, so much better than dealing with the a wheelie suitcase!
Has anyone taken this on Ryanair? I know the demensions are slightly bigger then the carry on limit, but if you pack light can you make it fit?
Would this duffle fit two pairs of ski boots plus have room for smaller gear?
Alec,
Might be pushing it for 2 pairs of boots depending on boot size. I've got 28.5's and they fit fine with room for helmet, gloves, etc...
How does the backpack straps attatch to bag?
Hey Gary,
I have attached a photo of how to attach the shoulder straps. It is a little tricky but once you get it you got it! Email headed your way
This DRW coating is not explained. Please elaborate.
Is this duffel waterproof? Can it be made waterproof? If so what to use for waterproofing?
Den,
The fabric is completely waterproof, the zippers are not. So it does great in rain and snow, not so much if it's fully submersed under water.
Hi , has anyone taken this bag as carry on luggage in a plane? Do you know if it's too big? Many thanks!
Hi Isabel,
Yes, this 60L duffel should meet most airlines size requirements for a carry on.
If you have any other questions, feel free to reach out to me directly.
Thanks,
this is a great carry-on, I use it all the time when I fly.
How do you fold it back into its pocket for storage?
Jared,
if you watch this youtube video, which is also posted down below it shows towards the end of the clip how the bag can fold back into it's pocket.

What are the interior colors and how dark/light is it for the interior of all the duffle colors available including classic red? I'm looking for interior colors that are light so it is easier to find things. I don't want to be lost in a "black hole"!
Can a single shoulder strap be purchased separately? Or can the backpack strap be utilized as a shoulder strap?
Does this bag have the traditional single over the shoulder strap or just the backpack style straps?
Travers,
just the backpack straps. They extend fairly long, so they work fine over the shoulder as well.
Hi.
Cannot figure out how to attach backpack straps on my 60L Patagonia duffel. An I missing a strap? I understand the clip part but not the opposite end.
Help?
i had the same question and eventually figured out that the bottom end of the backpack strap (opposite the clipped end) slides diagonally through the plastic part attached to the bag. Hope that makes sense
Is the 60L carry-on size?
Agnes,
Most US carry-on restrictions are in the neighborhood of 22" x 14" x 9" -- the 60L Black Hole is ~25" x 13" x 10". I've used it as a carry-on five or six times, but not fully packed. If it were 100% full, packed to the gills, you might not get away with it, but for the most part, I'd say yes, it'll work fine as a carry-on.
Let me know if you have any other questions-- I'd be happy to help! I can be reached via email at llabar@backcountry.com or 801.736.6399.
This is a great carry on!
I packed mine to the gills, and though it was about 2.5 inches over the total restriction for American Airlines, no one said a word to me about it, maybe because I had it on my back, and most backpacks are well within guidelines. So for me, this was awesome as a carry on, and I loved getting to use it as a "backpack". But beware that different airlines have different restrictions and also have an up-charge if you claim it as a checked bag AT the airport (rather than doing it online beforehand). But some airlines also let things slide. Worst case scenario, they may tell you it's too big at the gate--just take a couple things out of it and squeeze it down to make it fit in their little size-tester-thingamajigs (something you can't do with a boxy suitcase)--it can surely take the rough handling! :) Good luck!!!
What color is the interior of the black bag?
Alex,
The interior is light grey for the black model.
What are the dimensions of this bag (L, H, W)?
Hey Ben,
This bag is 25" x 13" x 10"
Wondering why they went to 900d from the previous version that is 1200d and how that is heavier duty than the previous version.
Hello uraudi, what a good question. The previous model was made with 14.7-oz. 1,200-denier 100% polyester, whereas the new model is made with 15-oz. 900-denier 100% polyester ripstop. The fabric's weight does affect abrasion resistance, so the newer model is made with "ripstop" polyester, whereas the previous model--though coming in at 1200d--is not listed as ripstop (ripstop refers to the weaving of fibers into the fabric into a diamond or square shape that, when punctured or torn, are better able to stop the tear from growing). You can actually see the difference in the fabric, with the one the right being the new, 900d polyester ripstop (see the characteristic ripstop squares?) with the one on the left being the older model. So, the bottom line is the integrity might be even better in the new model, despite the difference in denier.
I hope that helps!
Thanks for the reply, that answers my question.
Glad to help! :)
What are the differences between this and the previous version other than a $10 difference. It also looks like the external attachment points are shifted a bit. Anything else?
great question. The Black Hole bags were fully redesigned for this season.
Here are the updates:
New more durable fabric.
Updated pack strap interface - more secure and easier to take on and off
Internal compression straps
The entire bag self stuffs into the front pocket
(we should have a video available soon detailing all of the updates as well)
