Black Hole 55L Duffel Bag
Patagonia calls its line of ultra-durable duffel bags the Black Hole series because they swallow up clothes and gear in a seemingly endless void of space, and even though it's not the largest in the lineup, the Black Hole 55L Duffel Bag might embody this more than any other. You'll be pleasantly surprised by its storage capacity on gear-intensive weekend travels or longer trips where you end up packing a bit lighter. Its burly and bombroof ripstop fabric withstands wear and tear from endless adventures, and doesn't mind being tossed down on rocky and rugged surfaces. The Black Hole series also boasts a highly water-resistant construction that keeps your stuff dry from all but the most relentless downpours, so you can have some peace of mind when your bag's resting in the back of a pickup. Deployable backpack straps make it easy to carry when you're wandering new cities or hiking trails, while daisy chain loops provide lashing points for extra equipment and gear.

I bought a 55L for each of my college kids for back and forth trips home. The bag is so spacious and well constructed. We also use them for traveling and camping trips. So easy to carry with the backpack straps. Very easy to clean as well.

Worth It
- Familiarity:
- I've used it several times
I lived out of this bag for about three months and my only complaint is that it could use more pockets (I'm so unorganized). I've dragged it on roadtrips, plane trips, camping... and it still looks like new. Very rarely has patagonia not been worth the price and this is no exception, I have no doubt this will last me forever.

Perfect Duffel

Love this bag! I was looking for a duffel that could easily fit everything whether it be a weekend or week long trip. The bag itself is very durable and I love all the colors. The extra pocket is nice for extra storage as well. Another great Patagonia purchase. Wanting to buy another for carry on purposes.

The Perfect Duffle
- Familiarity:
- I've used it several times
The first thing i love about this bag is that it fits in the overhead compartment on planes, and it fits so so much. 55L is a good Medium size, but truly it holds a week about of stuff to even two weeks. Being super durable & waterproof, I can't wait to put this to good use. The backpack straps are handy as well as the normal duffle bag handles. This is definitely a black hole of a bag.

Expensive but durable
- Familiarity:
- I've used it several times
I've used a few Black Hole bags over the last few years and most recently took this one on a short trip where all I took was packed in this duffel. I did enjoy the dual-use between the duffel and a backpack, plus the airline carry-on compliant size was useful while packing for some piece of mind. I'm looking forward to see how long this bag lasts for me since I've already had a couple of the smaller cubes that have shown no signs of stopping since I got them 3 or 4 years ago. I do wish it didn't stand out so much sometimes but they do look really cool and the ripstop fabric doesn't feel like it'll break down anytime soon. A couple more thoughts: - The several storage pockets came in handy - The removable backpack straps are useful and come off quickly while also being quite comfortable - It is meant to be able to be repacked into its own pocket but I struggled unpacking it initially and don't ever want to try to repack it again. I'll just use a slightly larger stuff sack until Patagonia re-designs it's self-storage feature to be a bit more easily used

Larger than the old 60L Black Hole.
- Familiarity:
- I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
I already own two of these duffels in the older style/sizing, a 45L and a 60L. I use these both as luggage for international and local trips, as well as gear duffels. I decided I wanted to use a black hole as my ski apparel and helmet bag. The 45L was just a little too small and the 60 too large so I thought the 55L might be just right. Well, Goldilocks was quite wrong. This new 55L black hole is larger than my old 60L! It never occurred to me to measure the 60L duffel and compare the specs. I thought about exchanging it for a ânewâ 40L bag (which by the way is larger than the old 45L) but decided to keep it. Why? Because my empty Ultralight hiking backpack fits in the 60L, but a little too snuggly. It slips right in the 55L. Another change is the pocket in the lid is now a single pocket, and the lid itself is larger both positive changes IMHO. (The zipper is closer to the edges of the main body.) The black bag in the attached photo is the old 60L and the plum bag is the new 55L.

Very disappointing; will be sending back
- Familiarity:
- I returned this product before using it
It's a fine duffel, but that's about it. I was looking to replace a 1980s Jansport backpack I've used as a carry-on forever, but the fabric coating is coming off, and and the fabric is so tired that the zippers get jammed continually. Another thing I didn't like was how the multiple external pockets and straps catch on the smaller carry-on bins. But really wanted shoulder straps for those treks through the airports. This looked like it would check off those boxes. At this price point I was expecting a lot more than a basic duffel with one smallish internal pocket and some barely functional shoulder straps. Supposedly, this can be repacked into that small internal pocket, but I guess you have to be a lot more creative than I am to figure out how to do that. No way I could get it to go back in. The shoulder straps are very small, and very short and hook on with a strap double d-ring that you have to tweak into a regular d-ring. They'd work, but they wouldn't be comfortable. Plus, the top lid with all of the handles and things is facing and right on your back. Not very comfortable. This is being returned while I check out other options.

Pretty Darn Perfect
- Familiarity:
- I've put it through the wringer
I recently used this bag travelling around New Zealand for two weeks. It fit everything I needed for the full two weeks. It fits perfectly in any airline's overhead compartment. It is easy to carry. I did lots of walking from bus stops and around cities, even in the rain, and everything stayed dry. It's big, but not too big, robust, convenient. water resistant, and really just so easy to travel with. Highly recommend.

Best Bag Ever
- Familiarity:
- I've put it through the wringer
I use this bag for absolutely everything. Recently I've been using it for all of my wedding-related events but historically it's the only bag I need on backpacking, camping and traveling trips. I love bringing this guy on the plane with me as well. It fits in the upper storage area perfectly. Cannot recommend this bag enough.

Need to go anywhere and carry EVERYTHING?? The Black Hole series will carry it all. The bags are durable, water resistant, zippers are solid, and they can carry anything and everything under the sun. The 55L is a perfect size for weekend trips, and even goes as a carry-on! Love these bags and will continue to buy more to carry everything I own.

What are the dimensions, preferably in inches, of the Black Hole series of duffel bags? I am in need of a new duffel, and I can't decide based on Liters. Please help.
