    Defies physics.

Tell your astrophysicist and sci-fi friends that Patagonia found out what's in a black hole, or at least the Black Hole 60L Duffel Bag: your climbing, hiking, and traveling gear from your last five-day trip. Inspired by rugged-yet-light alpine packs, the Black Hole features a burly ripstop fabric filmed in a TPU laminate and coated with DWR for the ultimate in outdoors protection. The padded base protects your gear throughout the trip, and Patagonia padded the removable shoulder strap and removable backpack straps for comfort. Internal organizers and zippered mesh pockets organize all the small things, while the external side pocket stows the duffel for compact storage. Compression straps prevent your gear from bouncing around whether you're traveling via airplane or four-wheeler.

What do you think about this product?

    Have questions about this product?

    Just the right size.

I originally scooped up the 45L version of this bag but found it be just a small step up from the size of a backpack. So instead, I got the 60L and love it! It's perfect for travel and can hold well over a weekend's worth of clothes. The material is extremely durable and I can totally imagine it lasting me for many years to come. Worth spending a bit extra for the high quality of this bag!

      Great duffel

      • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

This is the third Black Hole duffel I own. Bought it because I needed a smaller size than my 120 L bags for a one-month international trip (total of ten flights). It's just small enough to carry-on if not stuffed to the brim, and definitely sturdy enough to check. Better used for shorter trips, but great if you're packing light (one week or less). I used it as a duffel this time instead of a backpack, but love having the option to use it as both.

      Perfect carry on bag

      • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

This is the perfect carry on bag. the 45L is a touch on the small side. I prefer the 90L for a weekend + trip, but this bag bridges the gap between the 45 and the 90. This bag is the perfect size for a carry on!

Perfect fit for a petite torso

      • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I got this bag for an upcoming multi-week trip to Chile where we will be using various modes of transportation through the country, and therefore shlepping our bags all over the place. I love the way this fits in backpack mode. I've taken a few small trips and carrying this fully-loaded through an airport was no big deal. I'm a smaller woman, and this fitting me well is amazing. It's deceptively roomy, the material is great, I love the color selections (it makes it easy if you need to pick yours out of the line-up at baggage claim), and I can tell this bag is going to last me for awhile. I have a large version of the North Face duffel and, for me, this is a better fit

      That's my Bag, baby

      • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

It took me forever to figure out how to attach the shoulder straps, so I thought I'd drop a picture to help you out.

I use the bag for climbing gear. Hit me up with any other Patagonia questions!

      Whats in your gear bag?

      Great duffel, good makeshift cooler

      • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I was given this a gift, since I have destroyed a good amount of duffel bags while traveling. Took this to Puerto Rico and it held up like a champ. We ended up having to pack out all of our equipment in the middle of a rainstorm through roughly two miles of trails, while everyone else was struggling, I loaded the duffle on like a backpack and everything was nice and dry. I will say though that the water proofing is so good that if your gear is wet it will stay wet, if left closed. Also, this bag can double as a beer cooler and does a pretty decent job at it.

      Perfect Transition Bag

      • Familiarity: I gave it as a gift but have feedback to share

Got this for my husband and he's psyched. We have the 120L black holes for big ski trips, and we love them, so why change? Patagonia did a great job with the whole Black Hole line up. So far he's used it for transitioning from mountain biking to golf to dinner. Perfect size. Very durable, easy to clean and he loves the backpack straps and the interior mesh zip pockets.

      The right size & characteristics

      • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

This bag is the right size and has all the right characteristics for many aspects of outdoors activities. Although not totally waterproof, I use it in the drift boat to hold gear for a fly fishing trip where it's setting on the bottom of the boat subject to water and manages to keep gear dry. It's not too big to be stuffed in a location that is out of the way.
Works so well for short climbing outings especially with the ability to use the pack strap option. Holds rope and other necessary gear. As well opens up wide to allow clear view and access to gear.

      More than just another duffle

      • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I finally bought one of these just in time for a 2 week long vacation, and I really wish I'd bought it sooner. This bag is absolutely amazing! Not only is it durable, but it also fits perfectly into the overhead bins on most planes, and turns into a backpack for easy carrying. The inside storage on this is also really great, I used the inner load securing straps to organize my storage cubes, mesh pockets held my swimsuit and charging cords, and the inside/outside pocket was perfect for storing an extra layer for the plane. Looking forward to using this bag more in the future, and possibly even buying a second one.
Pros: roomy, has pockets, fits in overhead storage on planes, rectangular shape is great for stacking, easy to attach backpack straps, durable fabric
Cons: price- but honestly this bag is worth it

      Perfect size

      • Familiarity: I've used it several times

This bag is a the perfect size for a week long excursion, overnight trips, or a carry on. The only thing I wish they would add is a shoulder strap, the bag only has the ability to be carried in hand or like a backpack, not a messenger bag.

      Buy this Bag

      • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I have been living out of this bag and my camping backpack and I could not speak more highly of this product. It took me a while to pull the trigger on purchasing it just because it is an investment for what seems like simply a duffle bag, but this thing is so much more than your traditional duffel! It is insanely durable and is nicely water resistant. It still looks practically brand new! Love the backpack attachments/straps! BUY THIS BAG.

      Pure Magic

      • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

Originally, I picked up the 45L Black Hole and decided it was way too small for my intended purpose, and after getting this one as a replacement I've decided that it's my perfect go-to weekender bag! In the two short months that I've owned this bag (I have the light grey / purple color combo, which also happens to be unique and cute) I've brought it on work trips, car camping adventures, and on airplanes as my carry-on bag for weekend trips. It's amazing. It fits perfectly in the overhead bin and the side handle makes it easy to pull down (especially as a short person) when you're rushing off the plane. It's awesome for car camping and fits into our jenga trunk packing situation far better than an unwieldy backpack. The backpack straps are a bit thin, but still convenient. I have also used one in a criss cross capacity as a makeshift shoulder strap that makes for easy carrying across the airport. They are a bit tricky to put on as mentioned in other reviews - you need to rotate and slide the plastic end piece into the D ring, then rotate again so it locks into place. All in all, this is an incredible, well constructed, versatile travel bag. My husband certainly doesn't need another bag but he's so jealous every time I whip this out that I will probably buy him one for his birthday so he stops whining about it.

      Great weekend duffel.

This is a nice sized duffel for short trips, with minimal to moderate gear/clothing. A bit small for bigger, gear demanding adventures.

Durability is great. Shoulder straps are easy to use and comfortable. Minimal, but effective pocket.

        Black Hole Believer

        • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I now have the 60L and the 90L Black Hole duffel and love both. Photo attached here is from a BC work trip and as you can see from the Black Hole stack, the duffel is a employee favorite!

I like that the 60L is a bit more compact than the 90L - much more of a weekend get away bag. It still can fit plenty of gear (frequently stuff my bike gear, clothing for weekend trips, computer bag, even groceries in) and it fits everything well.

Being that its water resistant, it holds up well in the snow and more wet conditions, though I haven't thoroughly used it outside of traveling and car camping in the dirt, though I plan on using it for ski season quite a bit this next year.

The straps make it easy for carry on and a stuffed 60L feels better on the back than even a 90L that isn't full.

All in all, if you're looking for a hefty duffel that you can count on for reliability, this is a great option with rad colors!

        Great bag for travel

        • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I have had my bag for over a year now and I absolutely love it. I purchased the 60L and have used it as my carry on on countless flights. The capacity is perfect for week long trips. The shoulder straps are super comfortable. If I don't have it crammed full of stuff it actually will fit under the seat in front of me on flights. I've also used it during the summer as a beach bag or when I go glamping with family. Best bag I've purchased and the price is very reasonable.

        Amazing Versatility

        • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I've had this bag for almost a year now, and I use it constantly. I have tossed it and dropped it and had it on my back for countless adventures. I no longer need to check bags when going on trips, because I can use this bag as a carry-on, while also being able to pack everything I need for a weeklong trip. This bag has exceeded my expectations and is by far the best pack I have owned.

        Bag # 3

        • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

It's perfect for all my gear and clothes! Love all the pockets and how durable it is. The size is great for a week to two week trip. It can also be folded down and stuffed into the bag it comes with to save space

        An Endless Abyss of Versatility.

        • Familiarity: I've used it several times

Reader's Digest Version: This bag is pretty stinkin' awesome. It's not a dry bag, so it won't safeguard your stuff from downpours or accidental swims in the river. However, it does feature an extremely durable and water-resistant exterior. And it's supposedly carry-on compatible, but I have yet to test that rumor (though I wouldn't doubt its legitimacy).

Non-Reader's Digest Version: To be honest, I've had the same carry on duffel bag since I was 7 or so. It was a pretty simple bag circa LL. Bean, and finally, after all this time, it finally had the radish this past year......Which is where the Black Hole 60L comes into play. I've now dubbed this bag Ye Olde Faithful's Replacement, and I speculate (based on Patagonia's bomber construction) that this bag will too be a Ye Olde Faithful.

The Black Hole material doesn't even bat an eye when it comes time to huck and haul, not to mention it happily withstands the often hasty-stuffing-into-the-back-of-my-car-among-precarious-objects sort of scenario. The water-resistant treatment has been especially helpful. That being said, the bag certainly isn't waterproof - so don't expect it to protect your stuff if you leave it out in the rain for extended periods of time or let it take a dip in the river.

The backpack straps are a really, really nice touch, and make transport a breeze. However (ha) they were a shade confusing to assemble at first. Despite this initial snafu, the straps actually stay put, which is a really nice feature and one that should be relatively self-evident, but you'd be surprised how frequent that kind of stuff occurs.

The two, internal zippered pockets are great, but if you need more storage options, I highly recommend checking out the Black Hole Cubes!

All in all, I highly recommend this bag to anyone who is looking for a hardy, versatile, and carry-on compatible duffel bag.

        Unanswered Question

Has anyone taken this on Ryanair? I know the demensions are slightly bigger then the carry on limit, but if you pack light can you make it fit?

This DRW coating is not explained. Please elaborate.
Is this duffel waterproof? Can it be made waterproof? If so what to use for waterproofing?

Hi , has anyone taken this bag as carry on luggage in a plane? Do you know if it's too big? Many thanks!

        Unanswered Question

What are the interior colors and how dark/light is it for the interior of all the duffle colors available including classic red? I'm looking for interior colors that are light so it is easier to find things. I don't want to be lost in a "black hole"!

        Unanswered Question

Can a single shoulder strap be purchased separately? Or can the backpack strap be utilized as a shoulder strap?

Does this bag have the traditional single over the shoulder strap or just the backpack style straps?

        Best Answer

i had the same question and eventually figured out that the bottom end of the backpack strap (opposite the clipped end) slides diagonally through the plastic part attached to the bag. Hope that makes sense

        Is the 60L carry-on size?

        Agnes,

Most US carry-on restrictions are in the neighborhood of 22" x 14" x 9" -- the 60L Black Hole is ~25" x 13" x 10". I've used it as a carry-on five or six times, but not fully packed. If it were 100% full, packed to the gills, you might not get away with it, but for the most part, I'd say yes, it'll work fine as a carry-on.

Let me know if you have any other questions-- I'd be happy to help! I can be reached via email at llabar@backcountry.com or 801.736.6399.

I packed mine to the gills, and though it was about 2.5 inches over the total restriction for American Airlines, no one said a word to me about it, maybe because I had it on my back, and most backpacks are well within guidelines. So for me, this was awesome as a carry on, and I loved getting to use it as a "backpack". But beware that different airlines have different restrictions and also have an up-charge if you claim it as a checked bag AT the airport (rather than doing it online beforehand). But some airlines also let things slide. Worst case scenario, they may tell you it's too big at the gate--just take a couple things out of it and squeeze it down to make it fit in their little size-tester-thingamajigs (something you can't do with a boxy suitcase)--it can surely take the rough handling! :) Good luck!!!

Wondering why they went to 900d from the previous version that is 1200d and how that is heavier duty than the previous version.

        Best Answer

Hello uraudi, what a good question. The previous model was made with 14.7-oz. 1,200-denier 100% polyester, whereas the new model is made with 15-oz. 900-denier 100% polyester ripstop. The fabric's weight does affect abrasion resistance, so the newer model is made with "ripstop" polyester, whereas the previous model--though coming in at 1200d--is not listed as ripstop (ripstop refers to the weaving of fibers into the fabric into a diamond or square shape that, when punctured or torn, are better able to stop the tear from growing). You can actually see the difference in the fabric, with the one the right being the new, 900d polyester ripstop (see the characteristic ripstop squares?) with the one on the left being the older model. So, the bottom line is the integrity might be even better in the new model, despite the difference in denier.

        I hope that helps!

What are the differences between this and the previous version other than a $10 difference. It also looks like the external attachment points are shifted a bit. Anything else?

great question. The Black Hole bags were fully redesigned for this season.

        Here are the updates:

        New more durable fabric.

Updated pack strap interface - more secure and easier to take on and off

        Internal compression straps

The entire bag self stuffs into the front pocket

(we should have a video available soon detailing all of the updates as well)
