    Defies physics.

Tell your astrophysicist and sci-fi friends that Patagonia found out what's in a black hole, or at least the Black Hole 60L Duffel Bag: your climbing, hiking, and traveling gear from your last five-day trip. Inspired by rugged-yet-light alpine packs, the Black Hole features a burly ripstop fabric filmed in a TPU laminate and coated with DWR for the ultimate in outdoors protection. The padded base protects your gear throughout the trip, and Patagonia padded the removable shoulder strap and removable backpack straps for comfort. Internal organizers and zippered mesh pockets organize all the small things, while the external side pocket stows the duffel for compact storage. Compression straps prevent your gear from bouncing around whether you're traveling via airplane or four-wheeler.

    Great bag, perfect carry on

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

My wife and I did thailand with only these! Perfect weekend bag, or international travel if you only want to take a carry on. We wanted to be able to drive mopeds everywhere we went so the backpack straps were great. I've had mine for years now and it's been durable.

    Great Bag

    • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

Great bag, like the material. Backcountry : Why not list the size of the bag LxWxH for each bag. Had to go to the Patagonia site to find the size (rather than just the volume). Thanks

    Small but so large

    • Familiarity: I gave it as a gift but have feedback to share

This thing is durable, packable ,and a great size. I think my favorite thing about this bag is how small you can make it when you're not using it.

can't get enough of these bags

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I ordered the 60L . the size is perfect for a short weekend trip. fits all my running gear and some more. love all the straps and handles as it makes it easy to carry and the colors make it easy to spot. The fabric is a perfect combination of durability, water resistant and softness.
A great company to admire with great products. I LOVE Patagonia Thank you for making my outdoor life so easy and stylish.

    The hits keep coming

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

The 60L Black Hole duffel is everything I hoped it would be and more. Based on the existing reviews and my experiences with the Black Hole line, I had no doubts this bag would kick ass. I'm more than a little obsessed with this line from Patagonia, I have the messenger bag, 25L flip top backpack, 40L duffel and the 70L and 120L roller duffels. It's safe to say that the 60L model is going to be my favorite of them all aside from maybe the 25L daypack, which I use almost everyday for work and shooting photos. I had no plans on buying this until I picked one up for my girlfriend for her birthday and saw how versatile it was.

The 60L has a ton of uses, perfect for weekend ski getaways or stowing into a carry on. The straps are super comfy and make toting this thing a breeze even when it's fully loaded. The material, like the rest of the line, is totally bombproof (though as described not 100% waterproof, that's not it's intent). I've traveled a ton with very heavy camera gear in the roller versions of this bag and they have withstood a litany of abuse with ease.

    Nice Bag

    • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

I bought this for the wife and she absolutely loves it. She recently took it on a trip to Canada and came back raving about it. She just loved the fact that she could throw it on her back and trek on. Have had zero issues with it up till now. great product.

    Work Horse.

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

This duffel is the work horse of bags... it does it all. Absolutely bombproof construction, and it does the black hole name justice. I can fit everything I need for a day, a weekend, probably even a full week in here. The 60L is perfect for travel as well. The backpack straps make it super easy to carry through the airport and it works great as a carry-on. I've had success fitting it under the seat, or in an overhead bin on any airline I've traveled thus far. I've tossed this thing in the dirt, sand, snow, you name it and it still looks great.

Lastly, a friend of mine had one of these that DID have an issue after moving through TSA. Patagonia replaced the entire bag without hesitation. I always feel good supporting this great company and they are one of the best at standing behind their products.

Buy this bag, you won't regret it.

    Excellent!

    • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

I bought this in a hurry for an international trip so I could bring some ski gear and THIS THING ROCKS! The bag had plenty of room for my stuff and the backpack conversion worked great. The only hiccup was that it took me a second to figure out how to attach the backpack straps, but a quick Google search cleared that up for me. This thing is a great option. Durable, big, and carries well.

Who doesn't want a hands free duffel?

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times

What else can I say about this duffel that hasn't already been said. Super simple duffel. Packs down super small for great storage. The color variety is great for any body's personality! Super durable yet light weight! Perfect carry on bag when not packed too much!

    Move over Mary Poppins

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

This is the true magic bag. So durable, so easy to stuff full of gear, and so easy to transport as a backpack. This makes cruising through the airport a breeze and its easy to fit into overhead bins for convenient travel. This bag comes with me for quick weekends away and longer travels.

Does this bag need another review?

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times

No, it doesn't. Why? Because it's awesome. It's tough, durable, functional. No-nonsense extraneous pockets or features, just what you need. Keeps your gear dry, takes a beating, and the shoulder staps let you go hands-free when you need to carry other stuff. Check out the review with the 60L size stuffed perfectly in an overhead bin on a plane...that's the size I went with so I can use it for my carry-on. (I gotta give Karissa at BC credit for pointing that review out to me, gave me a perfect idea for how big of a bag I wanted, klamb@backcountry.com !!!) This bag rocks.

    Does It All

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

Gear transport, carry on, weekend bag. This pack does it all and is made to last, going to be purchasing a few more sizes now that the 60 has worked so well for me.

    WOW WOW

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

Great duffel bag. I already had the 90L and I love it! I use it mostly for ski trips because it fits all my clothing, and all my ski gear inside. The back pack straps are comfy and it's super easy to carry. I had to get the 60L so that I can use for shorter trips and not have such a bulky bag :)

Are you able to get your ski boots and a respectable amount of ski gear in your 60L? I'm trying to find something that will hold my boots, jacket, pants, ski essentials AND still work as a carry on.

    Should Have Bought It Sooner

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I've been needing to replace my old duffel bag for quite some time. After reading all the positive reviews, I bit the bullet and bought one. I've used it several times now and I wish I would have bought it sooner! I was shocked at how much I was able to fit in this bag. The backpack straps made it easy to carry around. The material seems very strong and should hold up for a long time. I can't speak for the DWR finish, but I feel like it should keep things dry.

You are free to move about the world...

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

A bomber duffel, no doubt. Durable outer, well-functioning zippers, strong and adjustable strapping, does have internal compression straps, and the 60L will fit (as long as it isn't 100% jammed) in a US airplane overhead compartment without issue. I put on my daypack, use one shoulder strap that is cross-linked and sling this across my chest, and I'm off to faraway lands without checking a darn thing.

The only downside I run into with this bag is when it isn't very full. The internal compression straps help with cramming more stuff in, but if you're packed light the bag of course flops around a bit. External compression straps could solve both problems- compressing both the bag when space is not in use and the contents, when filled to the brim, so you can jam the zipper shut.

    Love this bag

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

This is my fourth one of these bags. Its a travelers best friend. It is super spacious and the material is great for getting dirty. Rain just falls off of it. The material is also super packable so when you aren't using it then it is super easy to store away.

    A must for frequent travelers.

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times

This bag is the best duffel out there. Material is very durable, it's simple and easy to use with a almost perfect design. We love the removable backpack straps. They make this bag a must for any frequent traveler.

    Kind of surprised

When I opened this bag up I was surprised at how small it looked. No way would it hold my wet suit, my son's wetsuit, my dry top, two neoprene hoods, two pairs of neoprene mittens and booties and a pair of board shorts. I was wrong, with room to spare.

      Unanswered Question

Has anyone taken this on Ryanair? I know the demensions are slightly bigger then the carry on limit, but if you pack light can you make it fit?

This DRW coating is not explained. Please elaborate.
Is this duffel waterproof? Can it be made waterproof? If so what to use for waterproofing?

Hi , has anyone taken this bag as carry on luggage in a plane? Do you know if it's too big? Many thanks!

      Unanswered Question

What are the interior colors and how dark/light is it for the interior of all the duffle colors available including classic red? I'm looking for interior colors that are light so it is easier to find things. I don't want to be lost in a "black hole"!

      Unanswered Question

Can a single shoulder strap be purchased separately? Or can the backpack strap be utilized as a shoulder strap?

Does this bag have the traditional single over the shoulder strap or just the backpack style straps?

      Best Answer

i had the same question and eventually figured out that the bottom end of the backpack strap (opposite the clipped end) slides diagonally through the plastic part attached to the bag. Hope that makes sense

      Is the 60L carry-on size?

      Agnes,

Most US carry-on restrictions are in the neighborhood of 22" x 14" x 9" -- the 60L Black Hole is ~25" x 13" x 10". I've used it as a carry-on five or six times, but not fully packed. If it were 100% full, packed to the gills, you might not get away with it, but for the most part, I'd say yes, it'll work fine as a carry-on.

Let me know if you have any other questions-- I'd be happy to help! I can be reached via email at llabar@backcountry.com or 801.736.6399.

I packed mine to the gills, and though it was about 2.5 inches over the total restriction for American Airlines, no one said a word to me about it, maybe because I had it on my back, and most backpacks are well within guidelines. So for me, this was awesome as a carry on, and I loved getting to use it as a "backpack". But beware that different airlines have different restrictions and also have an up-charge if you claim it as a checked bag AT the airport (rather than doing it online beforehand). But some airlines also let things slide. Worst case scenario, they may tell you it's too big at the gate--just take a couple things out of it and squeeze it down to make it fit in their little size-tester-thingamajigs (something you can't do with a boxy suitcase)--it can surely take the rough handling! :) Good luck!!!

Wondering why they went to 900d from the previous version that is 1200d and how that is heavier duty than the previous version.

Hello uraudi, what a good question. The previous model was made with 14.7-oz. 1,200-denier 100% polyester, whereas the new model is made with 15-oz. 900-denier 100% polyester ripstop. The fabric's weight does affect abrasion resistance, so the newer model is made with "ripstop" polyester, whereas the previous model--though coming in at 1200d--is not listed as ripstop (ripstop refers to the weaving of fibers into the fabric into a diamond or square shape that, when punctured or torn, are better able to stop the tear from growing). You can actually see the difference in the fabric, with the one the right being the new, 900d polyester ripstop (see the characteristic ripstop squares?) with the one on the left being the older model. So, the bottom line is the integrity might be even better in the new model, despite the difference in denier.

      I hope that helps!

What are the differences between this and the previous version other than a $10 difference. It also looks like the external attachment points are shifted a bit. Anything else?

great question. The Black Hole bags were fully redesigned for this season.

      Here are the updates:

      New more durable fabric.

Updated pack strap interface - more secure and easier to take on and off

      Internal compression straps

The entire bag self stuffs into the front pocket

(we should have a video available soon detailing all of the updates as well)
