Black Hole 40L Duffel Bag

Don't let the Patagonia Black Hole 40L Duffel Bag's carry-on friendly size and stowable backpack straps trick you into thinking it's just a handy travel bag that's not suited for hard-wearing outdoor adventures, because then your camping trips and days at the crag would be missing a versatile piece of storage. The smallest bag in Patagonia's Black Hole lineup, the 40L is one of the line's most versatile. Its undeniably strong and burly ripstop fabric withstands the wear of globetrotting travels and daily outdoor adventures, and boasts a highly water-resistant construction that's verging on waterproof when you're caught out in the downpour. Thanks to its more compact size, this bag can be used more readily as backpack than others in the Black Hole line, so if you're looking to lug gear on campouts and climbing trips, you've got the durable duffel to do it with.

Love it

Great bag, great sizing! Love the color. Also, love that it can be a duffle or transition into a backpack.

Patagonia Uses Advanced Storage Math

I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
True to size

Honestly, I don't know how Patagonia does it; but this duffel feels much bigger on the inside than it looks on the outside. I can EASILY see how you could pack 5 days worth of clothes in here if you rolled them or used packing cubes. Personally, I bought it to carry my climbing gear to the gym, plus climbing clothes to change into. With even 3 pairs of shoes, my harness, my chalk bag and the clothes, there's room to spare. It's ridiculous but wonderful magic! FWIW: I got the Cobalt Blue and the WOW! that color really pops! I just know when our gym re-opens after the Corona tragedy, my posse is going to be envious.

I've used it several times

Love this bag! It's lightweight and has enough pockets for everything I need when I'm out camping. Definitely recommending getting if you're on the fence about it.

Best Pattagucci bag ever!

I gave it as a gift but have feedback to share

I love my Patagonia bag! It's lighweight, love the color and I like that I can carry it as a duffel bag or a bag pack. I also love the different line pockets and the straps to keep things from flopping around when packed.

Best. Bag. Ever.

I've put it through the wringer

If you are thinking of buying this bag, I would highly recommend it. I had deliberated on it for a number of months and finally purchased the 45L Blackhole at a decent price. As many others have written, it is absolutely amazing (and somewhat magical) how much stuff you can fit in these bags. Definitely bombproof and great size for a long weekend or a constant gear bag.

Great Bag Size for Weekend Trips

I've used it several times

I wanted a balance between portability, size, and organization. This bag seems to check all the boxes for me. I haven’t brought it out camping yet but I’ve taken it on a couple of weekend trips flying to my destination. It’s kind of the perfect carry on. My one complaint about it is that I wished it included a cross body strap but the backpack straps do work fine. I just normally carry a separate backpack sometimes and it would be nice to cross body strap the duffel. One thing to keep in mind is that the straps for this bag distribute weight differently than a normal backpack. It’s hard to describe without trying it on with stuff inside it. I believe it’s mostly due to the fact it’s a duffel bag so when it’s worn as a backpack, the contents shift differently than in a normal backpack.

Place some 1.5" stainless keyrings on the top daisy chain loops at diagonal ends of the bag, then afffix an aftermarket shoulder strap that's availabe online for less than $15. Make sure the keyring on the back end is on the outside, opposite your body; so the body of the bag will sort of wrap around your torso once you hoist it.
